His works have been performed in major centres as far afield as Tokyo and Berlin, Melbourne and Leipzig, New York and Venice as well as the major festivals in Wales and England. He is one of the very few composers to have been commissioned to compose a concerto for Mstislav Rostropovitch. Born in Bargoed, Glamorganshire, in August 1929, Alun Hoddinott started to play the violin and compose at an early age. Some of his works were performed and broadcast whilst he was a student at University College, Cardiff and he later studied with the Australian composer and pianist Arthur Benjamin. His first major success was his Clarinet Concerto No.1, given by Gervaise de Peyer and the Halle Orchestra under John Barbirolli at the 1954 Cheltenham Music Festival. This Source Book lists all Hoddinott's compositions from 1946 to 2005, almost 60 years of phenomenal output, and shows he has achieved a mastery of composition which embraces almost every musical medium. With information given on first performances, manuscript locations and recordings, in addition to details of composition dates, authors/librettists, durations, commissions and dedications amongst much else, this book is a key reference for all those interested in Alun Hoddinott and his music.

Book Alun Hoddinott

Download or read book Alun Hoddinott written by Stewart R. Craggs and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1993-05-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally known Welsh composer Alun Hoddinott has played a major role in the promotion of contemporary music in his country through his own prolific compositions--operas; orchestral, chamber, band, and solo instrumental pieces; choral music; songs; and incidental music--and as a professor of music at Cardiff University and artistic director of the Cardiff Festival of Twentieth-Century Music. This bio-bibliography includes a catalog of his works, classified by genre, which documents 278 compositions (plus numerous derived pieces) composed from 1946 to 1991, indicating commissioning, dedication, instrumentation, duration, manuscript information, publication, recordings, and premieres and selected performances. The works catalog is cross-referenced to recordings in a discography section and to related items in an annotated bibliography, which includes a large number of reviews and writings by the composer. An introductory biography, appendices listing the musical compositions alphabetically and chronologically, and a general index complete the volume. Prepared with the full cooperation of Hoddinott, this is the first detailed publication on this important composer.

Book The Mid Twentieth Century Concert Pianist

Download or read book The Mid Twentieth Century Concert Pianist written by Julian Hellaby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Julian Hellaby presents a detailed study of English piano playing and career management as it was in the middle years of the twentieth century. Making regular comparisons with early twenty-first-century practice, the author examines career-launching mechanisms, such as auditions and competitions, and investigates available means of career sustenance, including artist management, publicity outlets, recital and concerto work, broadcasts, recordings and media reviews. Additionally, Hellaby considers whether a mid-twentieth-century school of English piano playing may be identified and, if so, whether it has lasted into the early decades of the twenty-first century. The author concludes with an appraisal of the state of English pianism in recent years and raises questions about its future. Drawing on extensive research from a wide variety of primary and secondary sources, this book is structured around case-studies of six pianists who were commencing and then developing their careers between approximately 1935 and 1970. The professional lives and playing styles of Malcolm Binns, Peter Katin, Moura Lympany, Denis Matthews, Valerie Tryon and David Wilde are examined, and telling comparisons are made between the state of affairs then and that of more recent times. Engagingly written, the book is likely to appeal to professional and amateur pianists, piano teachers, undergraduate and postgraduate music students, academics and anyone with an interest in the history of pianists, piano performance and music performance history in general.

Book The Cambridge History of Musical Performance

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Musical Performance written by Colin Lawson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 1066 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intricacies and challenges of musical performance have recently attracted the attention of writers and scholars to a greater extent than ever before. Research into the performer's experience has begun to explore such areas as practice techniques, performance anxiety and memorisation, as well as many other professional issues. Historical performance practice has been the subject of lively debate way beyond academic circles, mirroring its high profile in the recording studio and the concert hall. Reflecting the strong ongoing interest in the role of performers and performance, this History brings together research from leading scholars and historians and, importantly, features contributions from accomplished performers, whose practical experiences give the volume a unique vitality. Moving the focus away from the composers and onto the musicians responsible for bringing the music to life, this History presents a fresh, integrated and innovative perspective on performance history and practice, from the earliest times to today.
