Download or read book A Simulation Study of the Combustion Mechanism of Aluminum in Solid Rocket Propellant at High Temperatures and Pressures in a Shock Tube written by Zichao Liu and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of aluminum combustion in pure oxygen and mixture (N2-H2- Cl2-O2) at high temperatures and pressures provides a simulation of combustion mechanism study of aluminum powder in solid rocket propellant. Computations were performed for predicting possible intermediate species and products. Emission spectra of important intermediate species were identified by using a spectrometer. Time histories of the AlO emission band show the continuum radiation of Al2O2 in the reaction scheme. The solid and liquid products were observed and analyzed by electron diffraction, X ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The gaseous products were detected by using infrared spectrometry. These measurements are in good agreement with the computations and provide useful chemical kinetic data. Keywords: Mathematical prediction, Aluminized propellants, Aluminum oxides. (Chinese translations).

Book Study of Solid Propellant Combustion and Aluminum Particles at High Pressure

Download or read book Study of Solid Propellant Combustion and Aluminum Particles at High Pressure written by Alexander Hillstrom and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ammonium perchlorate's burning rate as a function of pressure has an exponent break around 4000 psi where the pressure exponent becomes greater than 1. This causes AP to be highly sensitive to pressure fluctuations that can damage or destroy ammonium perchlorate composite propellant-based solid rocket motors. Studies conducted on AP at these high pressure are few and there is a lack of direct qualitative data due to the challenges posed by the high-pressure environment and optical window structural limitations. This has left the cause exponent break mechanism unknown and difficult to study. The High-Pressure Combustion Lab has built an Ultra-High Pressure Optical Chamber (UHPOC) that allows for optical measurements at these higher pressure regimes. Testing visual measurement techniques using the UHPOC and a telescope zoom lens to take detailed images of the propellant surface during the burn was conducted. Non-aluminized propellant and aluminized propellant samples were tested to observe the mechanisms of aluminum particle combustion in a propellant at high pressures and the behavior of the propellant past the exponent break region. \par At atmospheric, detailed high-speed images on the propellant surface were obtained using a high-powered lamp to light the surface brighter than the flame. At higher pressures, however, the luminosity of the flame was significantly greater than the lamp, creating shadow images of the propellant. Binder agglomerates were observed coming off the surface which increased in size and magnitude as the pressure increased. This is attributed to AP decomposition becoming the dominant burning rate mechanism which burned faster than the surrounding binder as has been observed from previous studies and numerical models. This leaves the binder only partially pyrolyzed, forming the agglomerates which detached from the surface. Aluminum particles were found to ignite at all pressures with the binder agglomerating the same amount in both aluminized and non-aluminized samples. Atmospheric tests show aluminum particles with detached flames and high-pressure tests show aluminum particles with surface flames.

Book Statistical Analysis of Steady State Combustion of Nonmetallized Composite Solid Propellants

Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Steady State Combustion of Nonmetallized Composite Solid Propellants written by R. L. Glick and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion model including aluminum and iron oxide was employed to correlate data bases of Miller and Maykut. Results for additive free formulations were excellent for both rate and exponent; results for formulations with aluminum and aluminum plus iron oxide were poor. A new method for extracting particle size dependent information from rate/response function/formulation data was developed from the statistical methodology itself and employed to process the aforementioned data bases. Results were encouraging; Miller's additive free and aluminum plus iron oxide data correlated very well; Miller's aluminum data showed that the increasing aluminum particle size increases interactions between oxidizer modes; Maykut's data base showed that aluminum induced interactions among oxidizer modes are decreased as iron content increases. Results elucidate mechanisms for rate, exponent, and response function control and show that the equal rate hypothesis employed in much combustion modeling is incorrect. A new approach for including the effects of transients introduced by particle size dependent rates in both steady and nonsteady combustion modeling was conceived. (Author).

Book Distributed Combustion in Solid Propellants

Download or read book Distributed Combustion in Solid Propellants written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes work on a research program to quantify the effect of distributed combustion of metal particles in a Rijke burner. Under a previous contract experimental data were obtained with the Rijke burner, and a mathematical model of the burner was developed. To improve the model, the McIntosh flame model, based on large activation energy asymptotics, has been coupled to the acoustic model. Results have been compared to experimental data showing that the McIntosh transfer function is an improvement over previous models. Law's model of aluminum combustion has been modified to include the effects of multiple oxidizers and their products, oxide accumulation on the surface of the burning aluminum particle, and convection. There are no adjustable parameters in the improved aluminum combustion model, and both transport and thermodynamic properties are calculated internally. Results indicate that the modified model compares more favorably to experimental data than a simple liquid droplet model. The aluminum combustion model has also been coupled to the Rijke acoustic model. Calculations show a sensitivity to the size of the region of influence surrounding a particle and to the time lag between the particle response and the acoustic pressure. The results show reasonable agreement with available data for aluminum particles burning in the Rijke burner ... Unstable combustion, Distributed combustion, Acoustic instability.
