Book excerpt: She steps to within a few feet of me. “The Power—do you have it? How about identity? Orientation? Do they know—the men, that is—do they accept it?” I hesitate, questioning my own motives. At last I say, “No, they do not—know, that is. I came to them before puberty. As for acceptance, they accept that I am a man with androgen insensitivity syndrome; a man who’s face resembles a woman’s. That is all. As for having the Power … my eyes have begun to change, at night, but clearing as the day goes on—if that’s what you mean. Now … please. Details.” She looks at me as though having achieved a minor victory. “That’s how you found me, by accessing the hive mind, though you wouldn’t have been aware of it. So, you’ve stayed among them and killed for them in order to survive, but now all that’s changing. Isn’t it?” I don’t say anything, only continue to stare at her. “And it is changing—make no mistake. That’s how M24 progresses. Your eyes will remain white longer with each passing day—until the transformation is at last complete.” She scans my face as though attempting to read my thoughts. “Tell me, Witch Doctor. What will you do when that day arrives?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to better control costs for print and digital resources—from recognized leaders in library administration! Academic libraries have been using electronic resources for several years, yet library administrators still find that the evolution from print to digital takes meticulous planning. Collection Management and Strategic Access to Digital Resources is a collection of eight presentations from the 2004 University of Oklahoma Libraries Conference focusing on the ways academic research libraries can successfully make the transition from print materials to electronic resources. Respected authorities offer effective strategies to efficiently coordinate the use of digital materials in the contemporary research library. As acquisition budgets tighten and fresh emphasis is placed upon finding strategies to afford needed resources, library administrators find it increasingly difficult to meet the challenge of providing information to today’s students and scholars. Collection Management and Strategic Access to Digital Resources focuses on innovative, practical solutions to difficult problems facing librarians and library administrators today and in the coming decade. The book is carefully referenced and includes tables and charts to clearly explain data. Collection Management and Strategic Access to Digital Resources presents and thoroughly discusses: the impact of digital resources on libraries, research, and learning in history and science open access of research results beyond the print journal regime Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and electronic journal subscriptions an introduction to Ithaka—a not-for-profit organization that acts as an “incubator” for electronic projects and research for libraries evaluations—and innovative alternatives—of the rules and beliefs of electronic resource collection the historical and contextual considerations that have made collections cooperation difficult to achieve—and a global resources network initiative that may answer the challenge transforming scholarship’s role by offering access to the raw material of research—offering new opportunities for access to a greater range of information the responsibilities of research libraries in a rapidly evolving digital world Collection Management and Strategic Access to Digital Resources is essential reading for senior library administrators in public, special, and academic libraries, as well as acquisitions, reference, collection development, and systems librarians.

Download or read book New Digital Worlds written by Roopika Risam and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of digital humanities has been heralded for its commitment to openness, access, and the democratizing of knowledge, but it raises a number of questions about omissions with respect to race, gender, sexuality, disability, and nation. Postcolonial digital humanities is one approach to uncovering and remedying inequalities in digital knowledge production, which is implicated in an information-age politics of knowledge. New Digital Worlds traces the formation of postcolonial studies and digital humanities as fields, identifying how they can intervene in knowledge production in the digital age. Roopika Risam examines the role of colonial violence in the development of digital archives and the possibilities of postcolonial digital archives for resisting this violence. Offering a reading of the colonialist dimensions of global organizations for digital humanities research, she explores efforts to decenter these institutions by emphasizing the local practices that subtend global formations and pedagogical approaches that support this decentering. Last, Risam attends to human futures in new digital worlds, evaluating both how algorithms and natural language processing software used in digital humanities projects produce universalist notions of the "human" and also how to resist this phenomenon.

Download or read book El Sue o de Oro written by Phillip Michael Coffee, William Coffee and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-11-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Sueño de Oro is a day-by-day account of an expedition for gold in Alaska from August of 1897 to August of 1899. The "log" was created by the leader of the expedition, William Mills Coffee, then of Santa Cruz, California. The log entries create a flowing story of the El Sueño expedition from San Francisco to the Bering Sea and up the Yukon River in Alaska. The El Sueño party searched for gold by dog sled, boat and on foot during the harsh winters of Alaska, where the temperatures were recorded as low as -80 degrees. During the two years there were mutinies, deaths, marriages, amputations, shipwrecks and various accounts of the Alaskan wilderness. The book is an historical account of one man's search for gold, very well documented with photos, maps of probable gold locations and claims, and financial records of the expedition. The Master Carpenter Certificates of the two ships involved with the expedition, "Bessie K" and "El Sueño", are included.

Download or read book Children of the Night written by Zan Safra and published by Quirky Crow Books. This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows that monsters are real. Sixteen-year-old Ayanda Draculesti is one of them. She's an Unnatural, an alchemical experiment escaped from a laboratory, part of a community with strange abilities that only emerges at night. Ayanda is one of the lucky ones—she can pass as an ordinary human. An unlucky Unnatural is likely to die at the hands of a furious mob. But even among Unnaturals, Ayanda is unusual. She was built to battle the Dead. The world has grown complacent when it comes to the Dead. It's the middle of the nineteenth century, a modern era of automata and aetherships, five hundred years since blood-drinking corpses last ravaged the Continent. But the Dead haven't finished with the world. One of them has returned, a vicious killer that slithers through Venice by night, trapping its people in a state of terror. This creature isn't a savage beast like the others. It's calculating. Clever. It has a plan. Ayanda knows she's the only one who can stop it, but she can't do it alone. There are more Unnaturals who want this vampire permanently dead: Yurei, a boy more phantom than human, Jette, an alchemist with a ferocious alternate personality, and Belle, a girl whose past terrifies even other Unnaturals. If they can overcome their own demons well enough to work together, they might have a chance. Might.
