Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and richly illustrated catalogue focuses on the finest illustrated manuscripts produced in Europe during the great epoch in Flemish illumination. During this aesthetically fertile period – beginning in 1467 with the reign of the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold and ending in 1561 with the death of the artist Simon Bening – the art of book painting was raised to a new level of sophistication. Sharing inspiration with the celebrated panel painters of the time, illuminators achieved astonishing innovations in the handling of color, light, texture, and space, creating a naturalistic style that would dominate tastes throughout Europe for nearly a century. Centering on the notable artists of the period – Simon Marmion, the Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy, Gerard David, Gerard Horenbout, Bening, and others – the catalogue examines both devotional and secular manuscript illumination within a broad context: the place of illuminators within the visual arts, including artistic exchange between book painters and panel painters; the role of court patronage and the emergence of personal libraries; and the international appeal of the new Flemish illumination style. Contributors to the catalogue include Maryan W. Ainsworth, curator of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; independent scholar Catherine Reynolds; and Elizabeth Morrison, assistant curator of manuscripts at the Getty Museum. Illuminating the Renaissance is published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Getty Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the British Library to be held at the Getty Museum from June 17 to September 7, 2003, and at the Royal Academy of Arts from November 25, 2003 to February 22, 2004.

Book excerpt: Early Netherlandish Painting will be equally welcome to the art lover , the museum and the reference library, giving access to the last major collection early Netherlandish painting to remain in private posession. It includes over forty masterpieces by Robert Campin, Petrus Chritus, Jacques Daret, Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and Rogier van der Weyden. The collection is also rich in works by the painters of the new generation of the early 16th century. An extensive introduction to the period precedes the catalogue of 43 paintings by masters including Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Robert Campin and Hans Memling. A very substantial introduction by Colin Eisler illuminates the background to early Netherlandish art and traces its development through the paintings. The extensively illustrated catalogue was prepared with the collaboration of graduate students at the Intsitute of Fine Arts, New York. Dr Emil Bosshardt, Conservator at the Villa Favorita, and Elizabeth Ardrery contribute to the paintings' technical examination. Infra-red reflectography has been used to examine each work and the results are published alongside the finished painting.

Book The Flemish Primitives Anonymous masters

Download or read book The Flemish Primitives Anonymous masters written by Anne Dubois and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called pre-Eyckian painting.

Book Liechtenstein the Princely Collections

Download or read book Liechtenstein the Princely Collections written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1985 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liechtenstein is one of the smallest European states, a principality situated between Austria and Switzerland in the Upper Rhine Valley. The nation is less than three hundred years old, but the ruling family, whose name it bears, traces its lineage back to the twelfth century. For successive generations, members of the Princely House of Liechtenstein have been devoted art collectors. With a high degree of appreciation of artistic achievement, they have pursued a centuries-long family tradition of acquiring not only great paintings and sculpture but also rare firearms, fine porcelain, and other works of art. The result of this tradition is a collection of masterpieces that in its depth and breadth reflects more than four hundred years of European history and ranks among the world's greatest private collections. This publication accompanies an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that marked the first time the masterpieces from this private collection were put on public display. The rich and varied array of paintings, sculpture, and other works included in this exhibition not only represents the paradigm of a great European princely collection, but also has the added distinction of being the collection of the only surviving monarchy of the Holy Roman Empire. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book Hieronymus Bosch

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter S. Gibson
  • Publisher : Hall Reference Books
  • Release : 1983
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Hieronymus Bosch written by Walter S. Gibson and published by Hall Reference Books. This book was released on 1983 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can look at the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch without amazement and bewilderment. Professor Gibson shows that what seems inexplicable to us today the canvases full of torture, monsters, and leering devils was perfectly intelligible to the fifteenth-century viewer. The subjects of Bosch's paintings were in fact the overwhelming concerns of late medieval Europe: the Last Judgment, original sin, death, temptations of the flesh. The author describes each picture in detail, placing each work within the context of medieval folklore and religion, and explains that many of the acts portrayed in the pictures were visual translations of verbal puns or metaphors.

Book J rg Breu the Elder

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Morrall
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-09-29
  • ISBN : 1351757202
  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book J rg Breu the Elder written by Andrew Morrall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Jörg Breu belonged to the generation of German Renaissance artists that included Dürer, Cranach, Grünewald, Altdorfer, and, in his own city of Augsburg, Hans Burgkmair the Elder. His art registered the early reception of Italian art in Germany and spanned the dramatic years of the Reformation in Augsburg, when the city was riven with social and religious tensions. Uniquely, for a German artist, Breu left a diary chronicling his reaction to the massive social and cultural forces that engulfed him, including his own conversion to the Protestant cause. His story is representative of the condition of many artists during the Reformation years living through this watershed between two cultural eras, which witnessed the transfer of creative energies from religious painting to secular and applied forms of art. In this wide ranging and original study, Andrew Morrall examines the effect of these events on the nature and practice of Jörg Breu's art and its reception, not just in his own period, but right up to the present day.
