Sie wurde zuletzt 1975 von Hans Eggers neu bearbeitet (für die 14. Auflage von 1987 begnügte sich Eggers mit einer Revision). Für die Neuauflage der Laut- und Formenlehre wurde die umfangreiche Forschungsliteratur der vergangenen 30 Jahre in Phonologie und Morphologie verarbeitet, die vor allem im Bereich der Phonologie vielfach zu neuen Erklärungen und Bewertungen führte, die zwar nicht immer übernommen, aber so weit möglich referiert wurden. Braunes Text wurde, vor allem in der Terminologie, vorsichtig modernisiert. Das bewährte Konzept (und auch das §§-Gerüst) wurde beibehalten. An Braunes Zielsetzung, Studienbuch und Forschungsgrammatik (Referenzgrammatik) zu verbinden, wurde so weit möglich festgehalten.

Ihrem Aussagewert gemäß kommen nun die voralthochdeutschen Runenbelege stärker zur Geltung. Um der zweifachen Aufgabe als Referenzwerk und als Studienbuch gerecht zu werden, stehen sowohl die Darstellung der Faktenbasis als auch deren Präsentation im Fokus der Neuauflage. Zahlreiche Phänomene werden auf breiterer Datenbasis beschrieben, zum Teil auch sprachhistorisch neu bewertet. Als wesentliche Neuerung, die vor allem didaktischen Zwecken entgegenkommen dürfte, werden den althochdeutschen Paradigmen nun ihre altsächsischen und mittelhochdeutschen Entsprechungen zur Seite gestellt. Dafür haben die Tabellen, deren Zahl zugelegt hat, ein großzügigeres Layout erhalten. Die Maßnahmen zielen darauf ab, den Nutzen als Referenzgrammatik wie als Lehrbuch weiter zu steigern. Band I und Band II der Althochdeutschen Grammatik sind auch als Set erhältlich.

Die Grundstrukturen des Althochdeutschen werden materialbasiert dargestellt. – Die Darstellung beginnt bei den Kasusfunktionen, dokumentiert die elementaren Satzbaupläne auf der Grundlage der Valenzgrammatik. Es folgt eine strukturierte Darstellung des Aufbaus der Nominal- und Verbalphrase, der Satzarten, der Satzfelder (Satzklammer), der Para- und Hypotaxe, der verschiedenen Nebensatzarten und der Negation. Die syntaktischen Strukturen werden, soweit möglich, aus allen Quellengattungen des gesamten althochdeutschen Zeitraums (8. bis 11. Jahrhundert) unter Einschluss des Glossenmaterials belegt.
