Book Violent Alternatives to War

Download or read book Violent Alternatives to War written by Jean-Francois Caron and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we take a look back at the way Western states have fought terrorist organizations in the last 20 years, it is difficult not to think that these alternatives to war might have been more ethical than the decisions to invade Afghanistan and Iraq in 2001 and in 2003. These cases speak for themselves as they have both led to the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, which is highly paradoxical in light of the logic that supported these interventions. There is a need to think of alternatives to war that will imply the legitimization of proactive sets of measures that would allow states to effectively prevent terrorist attacks through the use of kinetic force in a limited extent as a way to avoid the terrible and unpredictable effects of wars. Violent Alternatives to War: Justifying Actions Against Contemporary Terrorism engages in a moral discussion of the challenges associated with violent alternatives to war when confronting terrorism and suggests a comprehensive approach to how this form of violence can be legitimized and how it ought to be used against this contemporary threat.

In this small book Wink offers a precis of his whole thinking about this issue, including the relation of Jesus and his message to politics and nonviolence, the history of nonviolent efforts, and how nonviolence can win the day when others don't hesitate to resort to violence or terror to achieve their aims.

Book A Culture of Peace

Download or read book A Culture of Peace written by Patrick Sean Clarke and published by CoDevelopment Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview of the unit: Part one: Why War? In this introductory section, students consider some of the conventional explanations for why war occurs. Natural instinct, territoriality, provocation and self defense are the usual explanations offered by natural and social scientist. Students review a brief statement on the roots of war, and then develop group and class theses on the causes of war. Part two: Reality Of War. Students use a sequencing exercise to develop an awareness of the nature and effects of modern warfare. In this exercise, students use short descriptions of 23 major conflicts of the 20th century to lead into brief research on conflict. The purpose of this section of the unit is to have students develop a sense of historical perspective on war and to obtain enough knowledge about the nature of modern war to make informed judgments about its causes and effects and, subsequently, its necessity and value. Part three: Alternatives To War And Conflict. In this section, students participate in simulation called "peaceful conflict", which demonstrates how conflict can occur and how it can be resolved or avoided through negotiation and co-operation. Students then consider an article about how the Canadian military can be redefined toward peace. Part four: Building A Culture Of Peace. In this final section, students consider alternatives to violence through case studies that demonstrate how peaceful conflict resolution can work. Students then make presentations on peaceful conflict resolution, how it can be accomplished and what the barriers can be.

Book The Alternatives to War

Download or read book The Alternatives to War written by James Pattison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If states are not to go to war, what should they do instead? In The Alternatives to War, James Pattison considers the case for the alternatives to military action to address mass atrocities and aggression. The volume examines the normative issues raised by measures ranging from comprehensive economic sanctions, diplomacy, and positive incentives, to criminal prosecutions, nonviolent resistance, accepting refugees, and arming rebels. For instance, given the indiscriminateness of many sanctions regimes, are sanctions any better than war? Should states avoid 'megaphone diplomacy' and adopt more subtle measures? What, if anything, can nonviolent methods such as civilian defence and civilian peacekeeping do in the face of a ruthless opponent? Is it a serious concern that positive incentives can appear to reward aggressors? Overall, Pattison provides a comprehensive account of the ethics of the alternatives to war. In doing so, he argues that the case for war is weaker and the case for many of the alternatives is stronger than commonly thought. The upshot is that, when reacting to mass atrocities and aggression, states are generally required to pursue the alternatives to war rather than military action. The volume concludes that this has significant implications for pacifism, just war theory, and the responsibility to protect doctrine.
