Book Alternative Waste Package Designs and Storage Concepts for Disposal of High Level Wastes at the Yucca Mountain Repository

Download or read book Alternative Waste Package Designs and Storage Concepts for Disposal of High Level Wastes at the Yucca Mountain Repository written by Piyush Kar and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents and analyzes alternative waste package (WP) designs and operating concept for the Yucca Mountain repository. A 2nd generation WP design as well as an operating concept are introduced to reduce the risk of corrosion and to lower the repository costs. The concept permits major reductions in repository costs by increasing the WP thermal loading, by eliminating the need for titanium drip shields and by fabricating the outer container from corrosion resistant low alloy carbon steel. The 2nd generation concept utilizes the benefits of hot dry storage to minimize the potential for corrosion of the WP by liquid electrolytes. On similar lines to the second generation WP design and operating concept, four different WP designs are introduced for the PWR and BWR WPs that support the perspective of a generally drier emplacement drift due to increase in heat load and resulting higher temperatures. The designs are modifications of current US Department of Energy WPs. Nuclear waste was configured in the Cartesian as well as the radial manner with and without increase in the overall size of the WPs. The alternative designs would help cutting down nuclear waste disposal cost without sacrificing the containment standards. WP internal thermal analysis was performed for all the configurations types to demonstrate safety of the designs in terms of maximum attainable temperatures. The thermal analysis addresses heat transfer issues inside the waste packages.

Book Materials and Degradation Modes in an Alternative LLW low level Waste Disposal Facility

Download or read book Materials and Degradation Modes in an Alternative LLW low level Waste Disposal Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The materials used in the construction of alternative low-level waste disposal facilities will be subject to interaction with both the internal and the external environments associated with the facilities and unless precautions are taken, may degrade, leading to structural failure. This paper reviews the characteristics of both environments with respect to three alternative disposal concepts, then assesses how reaction with them might affect the properties of the materials, which include concrete, steel-reinforced concrete, structural steel, and various protective coatings and membranes. It identifies and evaluates the probability of reactions occurring which might lead to degradation of the materials and so compromise the structure. The probability of failure (interpreted relative to the ability of the structure to restrict ingress and egress of water) is assessed for each material and precautionary measures, intended to maximize the durability of the facility, are reviewed. 19 refs., 2 tabs.
