Book Comparing Silvicultural Systems in a Coastal Montane Forest

Download or read book Comparing Silvicultural Systems in a Coastal Montane Forest written by Eric J. Phillips and published by Canadian Forest Service. This book was released on 1996 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a study in which three alternative silvicultural systems, representing a range of canopy removal levels, were implemented in a research area on eastern Vancouver Island. The three nine-hectare treatments (uniform shelterwood, green tree retention, patch cutting) were replicated three times. The study also included and old growth and a clear-cut control block. Harvesting was completed in 1993 and post-harvest studies will continue for another 20 years. Investigators monitored the productivity and cost of the falling and forwarding operations, and measured site disturbance and coarse woody debris for each harvesting treatment.

Book Silvicultural Alternatives for the Management of Unstable Sites in the Queen Charlotte Islands

Download or read book Silvicultural Alternatives for the Management of Unstable Sites in the Queen Charlotte Islands written by Peter Richard William Sanders and published by BC, Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 1986 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest cover plays an important role in modifying the severity and frequency of natural soil mass wasting. Removal of the forest cover through forest harvesting and the associated engineering operations can alter natural processes and aggravate inherent instability. In the Queen Charlotte Islands, steep slopes, finely textured soils, frequent seismic activity, heavy precipitation, shallow rooting tree species, and high winds predispose the area to a high natural level of mass wasting. This preliminary appraisal reviews current silvicultural operations in the Islands and proposes alternatives. Traditional silvicultural systems are described and constraints imposed by the local conditions identified. Naturally occurring forests on the Queen Charlotte Islands are compared to projected managed forests that will replace them, and successional processes and their influence on mass wasting events are discussed. The report concludes by noting several research opportunities in the study of silviculture and mass wasting.

Book Effects of Clear cutting and Alternative Silvicultural Systems on Wildlife in Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods

Download or read book Effects of Clear cutting and Alternative Silvicultural Systems on Wildlife in Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods written by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the potential impacts of alternative silvicultural systems in Ontario boreal mixedwood forests on individual species and groups of wildlife. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods and a discussion of some of the concepts relevant to the later sections of the report, such as biodiversity. Alternative silvicultural systems are then reviewed, including modified clear-cut systems and the shelterwood system. The next four chapters cover habitat affiliations and the stand-level and large-scale effects of those silvicultural systems on the following categories of wildlife: birds, small mammals such as rabbits and squirrels, ungulates (moose, caribou), and furbearers with small, intermediate, and large home ranges.

Book Continuous Cover Forestry

Download or read book Continuous Cover Forestry written by Klaus von Gadow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large-scale application of new silvicultural systems has become a political reality in many parts of the world. This involves a gradual transformation of traditional silvicultural practice towards Continuous Cover Forestry, also known as near-natural forest management, favouring mixed uneven-aged stands, site-adapted tree species and selective harvesting. Selective harvesting systems have a long tradition. Specific CCF-related resource assessment, forecasting and sustainable harvest control techniques have been developed, but details about their use are not widely known. The objective of this volume is to present state-of-the-art research results and techniques relating to CCF management with an emphasis on systems engineering and modelling. Using a very simple classification based on the development of timber volume over age or time we may distinguish two types of sustainable forest management systems. Rotation forest management (RFM) systems, characterized by standard silvicultural treatments and repetitive cycles of clearfelling followed by planting; and continuous cover forestry (CCF) systems which are characterized by selective harvesting and natural regeneration, resulting in uneven-aged structures and frequently also in multi-species forests. The distinction is usually the result of decisions relating to the cost of timber harvesting, simplicity of management, or various intangible benefits. The oldest and most perfect examples of CCF systems are the so called plenter selection forests found in France, Switzerland, Slowenia and Germany. Today, CCF systems are encountered in various regions of Europe, North America and in some tropical and sub-tropical forests of South Africa, Asia and South America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gain expertise in the development of healthier, more sustainable forests with this indispensable guide Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) is an approach to forest management with over a century of history, one which applies ecological principles to the project of developing biologically diverse, structurally complex forests. Long used as the standard forest management method in Central Europe, CCF is generating renewed interest globally for its potential to develop and sustain forests that can withstand climate change impacts, maintain forest biodiversity in the face of major ecological challenges and offer better recreation experience. There is an increasingly urgent need for forest scientists and policymakers to be familiar with the toolkit provided by CCF. Continuous Cover Forestry: Theories, Concepts, and Implementation provides a thorough, up-to-date introduction to the theory and practice of CCF. Beginning with an overview of the method’s history and its foundational principles, the book provides detailed guidance for applying CCF methods to a range of ecological scenarios and forest types. The result is a clear, comprehensive portrait of this increasingly effective set of forestry tools. Continuous Cover Forestry readers will also find: Case studies throughout showing CCF at work in real-world forests Detailed discussion of topics such as forest structure, transformation, silvicultural systems, training, carbon forestry, conservation and more R code ready to take and apply Simple, adaptable models for deriving quantitative guidelines for CCF woodlands Continuous Cover Forestry is ideal for scholars and practitioners of forest science, forest ecology, conservation, and environmental management, as well as policymakers dealing with forestry or climate policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the theoretical basis and practical application of 20 diverse silvicultural systems for the benefit of ecologists, land-use managers and other professionals. These systems offer the key to regenerating, tending, and harvesting forests in an era of rapid deforestation and increasing demand for wood as fuel and building material. The approaches described here are being used successfully in widely different parts of the world, from Europe to the tropical rain forests, where reduced forest areas must be carefully managed in order to produce the highest possible sustained yield of timber products compatible with environmental protection and preservation. The systematic presentation and discussion of advantages and disadvantages of each program enables readers to select and apply the program most suitable for their needs.
