Book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods

Download or read book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods written by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.

Book Effects of Clear cutting and Alternative Silvicultural Systems on Wildlife in Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods

Download or read book Effects of Clear cutting and Alternative Silvicultural Systems on Wildlife in Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods written by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the potential impacts of alternative silvicultural systems in Ontario boreal mixedwood forests on individual species and groups of wildlife. Alternative silvicultural systems are then reviewed, including modified clear-cut systems and the shelterwood system. The next four chapters cover habitat affiliations and the stand-level and large-scale effects of those silvicultural systems on the following categories of wildlife: birds, small mammals such as rabbits and squirrels, ungulates (moose, caribou), and furbearers with small, intermediate, and large home ranges.

Book Minimizing Wind Damage in Alternative Silviculture Systems in Boreal Mixedwoods

Download or read book Minimizing Wind Damage in Alternative Silviculture Systems in Boreal Mixedwoods written by S. Navratil and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the nature of wind damage in forest stands and relates that damage to the silvicultural systems used or being developed for management of boreal mixedwoods. The report gives detailed consideration to the approaches for minimizing wind damage in released white spruce understory specific to the two-stage harvesting and silvicultural system. The review addresses the individual tree stability, stand stability, and external stability factors such as site characteristics, topography, windiness of the region, and sheltering effects of adjacent stands, and relates these to a framework for recognizing high-risk sites and stands. The report also discusses principles of wind damage management in the context of designing silvicultural systems with incremental wind protection levels.

Book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Harvesting and Regenerating Spruce dominated Boreal Mineral Wetlands

Download or read book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Harvesting and Regenerating Spruce dominated Boreal Mineral Wetlands written by Daniel A. MacIsaac and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regeneration of conifers on mineral wetland sites is often poor due to a rise in water table levels and establishment of heavy grass cover following harvest. This report describes a study of alternative silviculture systems as a means of improving conifer reforestation success on such sites. Narrow clear-cut alternate strips and a patch clear-cut were tested in a white spruce-black spruce-larch stand north of Red Earth, Alberta. Performance of planted spruce & larch as well as seeded white spruce was monitored on mounded (scarified) & non-mounded (non-scarified) areas following harvest & site preparation in 1997. In addition, groundwater hydrology, microclimate, wind damage, & ground cover were monitored across the site. Results are presented & discussed regarding survival & growth five years after harvest, occurrence of water on the site surface, and windthrow damage.

Book excerpt: While governments assert that Canada is a world leader in sustainability, Unnatural Law provides extensive evidence to refute this claim. A comprehensive assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of Canadian environmental law, the book provides a balanced, critical examination of Canada's record, focusing on laws and policies intended to protect water, air, land, and biodiversity. Three decades of environmental laws have produced progress in a number of important areas, such as ozone depletion, protected areas, and some kinds of air and water pollution. However, Canada's overall record remains poor. In this vital and timely study, David Boyd explores the reasons why some laws and policies foster progress while others fail. He ultimately concludes that the root cause of environmental degradation in industrialized nations is excessive consumption of resources. Unnatural Law outlines the innovative changes in laws and policies that Canada must implement in order to respond to the ecological imperative of living within the Earth's limits. The struggle for a sustainable future is one of the most daunting challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. Everyone - academics, lawyers, students, policy-makers, and concerned citizens - interested in the health of the Canadian and global environments will find Unnatural Law an invaluable source of information and insight. Book Wind Damage in a Partially Harvested Boreal Mixedwood Stand in Northeastern Ontario

Download or read book Wind Damage in a Partially Harvested Boreal Mixedwood Stand in Northeastern Ontario written by James A. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the study was to test a series of innovative silvicultural treatment packages designed to create mixtures of hardwoods and conifers while monitoring changes in ecological and silvicultural indicators of sustainability. The effects of wind damage on residual trees were monitored at the Stand Level Adaptive Management (SLAM) study site east of Cochrane, Ontario. The goals of this component of the study were to quantify and compare the effects of wind damage between partially harvested and unharvested portions of stands after harvest and to determine their influence on achieving the silvicultural objectives of the partial harvest treatment. Here the authors report the amount and distribution of wind damage in the residual stands at 1, 2, and 4 years after harvest and discuss the effects of this damage on the potential to achieve the desired silvicultural objectives. Specifically, they were interested in the effects of harvest treatments, tree species, direction of fall, stem rot, and stem form on the number and percent of wind damaged trees.--Document.
