Book Alternative Provision Huh

Download or read book Alternative Provision Huh written by Mary Myatt and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For one reason or another, mainstream education does not suit every young person. Many young people are educated in alternative provision, which is defined by the Department for Education as educational provision 'for pupils who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not otherwise receive suitable education'. As of 2023, over 25,000 young people are enrolled in alternative provision, and those numbers continue to rise. It is essential, then, that the curriculum on offer in alternative provision is exemplary, as these young people - already facing extraordinary challenges - need the very best if they are going to progress successfully into adulthood. Huh is the Egyptian god of endlessness, creativity, fertility and regeneration. He is the deity Mary Myatt and John Tomsett have adopted as their god of the curriculum. Their Huh series of books focuses on how practitioners design the curriculum for the young people in their schools. The Huh project is founded on conversations with colleagues doing great work across the education sector. In AP Huh, Mary Myatt and John Tomsett discuss curriculum provision for pupils attending alternative provision with some of the leading experts in the field. Mary and John interviewed pupils, parents, teachers, headteachers, CEOs, educational consultants and lecturers. They then edited the transcriptions of those interviews to provide an ambitious, thoughtful, nuanced and challenging vision of what the best possible provision looks like for children who find that mainstream schooling is not for them. The challenging conversations that comprise AP Huh paint a positive picture that is hugely hopeful for the future of the curriculum in our alternative provision settings.

Book Internationalizing Teaching Localizing Learning

Download or read book Internationalizing Teaching Localizing Learning written by Paul McPherron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on ethnographic and policy data collected over a ten-year span at a university in the People’s Republic of China, this book analyses the history of English Language Teaching (ELT) polices in Chinese higher education. The book uses the university as a lens in which to investigate the creative imaginations and divergent (re)appropriations of teaching methods, learning materials, and language use in the Chinese ELT context. Book chapters move beyond mere descriptions of tensions and point to the local understandings and practices of English teachers (both local and foreign) and students. Working together, these teachers and students are constantly articulating new social and political conditions and meanings outside and inside given discourses and traditions of ELT. The book’s main argument is that these multiple stakeholders must be given a more prominent role in shaping policy and curriculum at universities and other English language contexts around the world.

Millions of struggling teens, lacking alternatives, are being set adrift without capacity or hope. Yet their failures frankly, are unnecessary. Research-based study offering school-wide direction and practice is strongly evidenced throughout educational theory and practices, extending opportunities for significant continuation growth. A successful continuation setting, supported by study and introduced through From Risk to Resiliency, offers opportunities for program developers to bring together personal, closely held stakeholder values with program and classroom practices, opportunities only now being realized.

Book Back on Track Fewer things greater depth

Download or read book Back on Track Fewer things greater depth written by Mary Myatt and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a lot of redundant processes in schools. We need to take a hard look at these and consider whether they are adding value to the core purpose of schools. We need to apply Greg McKeown's 'disciplined pursuit of less' in order to create the time and space to do deep, satisfying work on the curriculum. This means that there will be some hard choices and recognise that if we cannot do everything, we need to move to a space which acknowledges there will be trade offs. This is more than a workload issue, it is about focusing our efforts on the most important agenda item in schools today - the development of an ambitious curriculum for every child, in every school.

Book Bad Students Not Bad Schools

Download or read book Bad Students Not Bad Schools written by Robert Weissberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are increasingly alarmed over our nation's educational deficiencies. Though anxieties about schooling are unending, especially with public institutions, these problems are more complex than institutional failure. Expenditures for education have exploded, and far exceed inflation and the rising costs of health care, but academic achievement remains flat. Many students are unable to graduate from high school, let alone obtain a college degree. And if they do make it to college, they are often forced into remedial courses. Why, despite this fiscal extravagance, are educational disappointments so widespread? In Bad Students, Not Bad Schools, Robert Weissberg argues that the answer is something everybody knows to be true but is afraid to say in public America's educational woes too often reflect the demographic mix of students. Schools today are filled with millions of youngsters, too many of whom struggle with the English language or simply have mediocre intellectual ability. Their lackluster performances are probably impervious to the current reform prescriptions regardless of the remedy's ideological derivation. Making matters worse, retention of students in school is embraced as a philosophy even if it impedes the learning of other students. Weissberg argues that most of America's educational woes would vanish if indifferent, troublesome students were permitted to leave when they had absorbed as much as they could learn; they would quickly be replaced by learning-hungry students, including many new immigrants from other countries. American education survives since we import highly intelligent, technically skillful foreigners just as we import oil, but this may not last forever. When educational establishments get serious about world-class mathematics and science, and permit serious students to learn, problems will dissolve. Rewarding the smartest, not spending fortunes in a futile quest to uplift the bottom, should become official policy. This book is a bracing reminder of the risks of political manipulation of education and argues that the measure of policy should be academic achievment.

C. drove up to her house and made a horrifying discovery: her son, Joey, had committed suicide. K. C. details her journey as an average mother who provides a loving and nurturing home for her two children but eventually must face and fight the daunting issues of domestic violence, drug abuse, and depression. While sharing her own misgivings and insecurities, she honestly portrays the path of severe depression that led Joey to take his own life, including her personal regret in not knowing more about the side effects of the controversial anti-depressant drug Paxil and in trusting the doctor who prescribed it for Joey. Download or read book Putting Staff First written by John Tomsett and published by John Catt Educational. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we don't ensure that our teachers are physically and mentally well, they cannot be their best for their students. If we do not ensure, first and foremost, that our teachers are feeling physically and mentally well, they cannot be their best for their students. Consequently, a school which does not prioritize staff wellbeing is disadvantaging its own students. Students first' is a misplaced sentiment: the best thing for students is a happy, healthy, motivated, well-trained, expert staff. By putting staff first you are providing for students the one thing which will help them make good progress in their learning: truly great teaching. Whilst it is easy to say that schools would not exist if it were not for the students, the glib converse is that without truly great school staff, the students would not be taught. What we need - as recruiting subject specialist teachers, school leaders and specialist support staff becomes increasingly difficult - is a revolution in how we treat our school staff. We have to put our staff before our students because it is the only hope we have of securing what our students need most: a world class education. The longer our schools are populated with hypoxic adults, we imperial all our futures.
