Book Hybrid Inflation Targeting Regimes

Download or read book Hybrid Inflation Targeting Regimes written by Jorge Restrepo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses a DSGE model to examine whether including the exchange rate explicitly in the central bank's policy reaction function can improve macroeconomic performance. It is found that including an element of exchange rate smoothing in the policy reaction function is helpful both for financially robust advanced economies and for financially vulnerable emerging economies in handling risk premium shocks. As long as the weight placed on exchange rate smoothing is relatively small, the effects on inflation and output volatility in the event of demand and cost-push shocks are minimal. Financially vulnerable emerging economies are especially likely to benefit from some exhange rate smoothing because of the perverse impact of exchange rate movements on activity.

Book Economic Assessment of Election Programmes

Download or read book Economic Assessment of Election Programmes written by Johan J. Graafland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Netherlands, the election programmes of the political parties are assessed for their economic impact by an independent economic bureau. The result of this analysis is published just before the elections take place. In this way, the voter will be protected against political parties that try to win the elections by making popular but unfounded financial promises. Economic Assessment of Election Programmes contains contributions of several distinguished economists and philosophers who consider the gains of this procedure to society. Does the analysis by the Netherlands' Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) raise the democratic quality of the elections? Can we really be confident in the tools of economics? The last section of this volume states the opinion of representatives of the political parties. This part also clarifies why political parties voluntarily participate in this process and how they perceive the role division between the political party and CPB.

Book An Approach to Long Term Fiscal Policy Analysis

Download or read book An Approach to Long Term Fiscal Policy Analysis written by Papa M'B. P. N'Diaye and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper proposes an approach to setting fiscal policy that factors in the longer-term budgetary pressures that countries face owing, in particular, to population aging and rising health care costs. The approach attempts to overcome the difficulties in evaluating economic trade-offs and social welfare over extended periods. Long-term fiscal projections from the "Intergenerational Report" published as part of the Australian budget in May 2002 are used in a simple model of the Australian economy to illustrate some of the longer-term trade-offs that need to be considered in framing budgets over the medium term. These illustrative simulations, in particular, point out the importance of smoothing fiscal adjustment over time and, hence, the need for careful planning. Smoothing fiscal adjustment, however, raises a new set of questions regarding burden sharing across generations and what costs should be shared.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Examines core issues with respect to the effect of export restrictions, the impact on processing and welfare, the consequences of foreign ownership of the resource, and the possibility of utilizing export restrictions as a retaliatory strategy against escalating tariff structures. It also examines the impact of liberalization of processed good markets. The book employs a combination of formal general equilibrium modelling and counterfactual simulation using computable general equilibrium (CGE) tecniques, with the New Zealand forestry industry used as a case study throughout. The book makes a contribution to the literature in this field by incorporating foreign ownership into an extensive formal analysis of processing incentives, develooping a new CGE model of the New Zealand economy, utilizing this model to evaluate the costs of export restrictions, and utilizing the GTAP to provide insights into the possible effect of the APEC Early Voluntary Sector Liberalization strategy.
