Book excerpt: The occurrence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth has prompted a shift in weed management strategies worldwide. Studies were conducted with the aim to (1) establish and compare the degree of tolerance of GR Palmer amaranth populations; (2) assess the efficacy of glufosinate, tembotrione, 2,4-D or dicamba, applied alone or tank-mixed, on Palmer amaranth with higher tolerance to glufosinate in the greenhouse and corn field, and (3) establish the mechanism involved in the tolerance of Palmer amaranth to glufosinate. Tembotrione, 2,4-D, dicamba, and glufosinate applied at 1x controlled 80 to 100%, 98 to 100%, 84 to 100%, and 94 to 100% Palmer amaranth, respectively. Differential response of Palmer amaranth populations to the test herbicides existed. The potential of selecting for resistance was highest in tembotrione, followed by dicamba. In the tank mixture test, all herbicides applied individually at 1x rate controlled Pra-C population 99 to 100% in the greenhouse and 91 to 100% in the field study. In corn, the control in Pra-C, Mis-C, and STF-C populations was 33 to 54% for tembotrione, 68 to 89% for 2,4-D, and 96 to 100% for glufosinate applied at their commercial rates. The study showed that half rates of 2,4-D and glufosinate can be applied, only in combination, without significantly compromising Palmer amaranth control. The majority of glufosinate + tembotrione and some glufosinate + dicamba mixtures were not compatible; glufosinate + 2,4-D mixtures were generally additive and in few cases, synergistic. The reduced efficacy from antagonism was overcome by mixing 1x rates of the herbicides. Pra-C (tolerant) had 2-folds higher tolerance than Lee-A (susceptible), with LD50 values of 344 and 141 g ha-1, respectively. The basal activity of the tolerant population was 20% higher than that of the susceptible. Tolerance to glufosinate is certainly due to higher baseline activity of GS in the tolerant plants, which would require more herbicide molecule to cause substantial inhibition.

Our results determined that the best late-season control methods were treatments tank-mixed with dicamba plus diflufenzopyr. These tank-mixtures improved control from 10 to 46% [percent] over treatments without the dicamba premix. Tankmixtures with dicamba plus diflufenzopyr that provided weed control > [greater than] 96% 28 DAA included s-metolachlor plus glyphosate plus mesotrione and tembotrione plus thiencarbazone. For the prevention of POST-harvest GR palmer amaranth seed production, our results determined that paraquat provides excellent initial control of existing vegetation but regrowth can occur from larger plants. The addition of a residual herbicide may aid in controlling regrowth as well as preventing plant germination. All treatments provided enough control for the prevention of seed production. Through implementation of POST-harvest management practices, 1200 seed per m2 [meter squared] was prevented from replenishing the soil seed bank. There were no adverse affects on wheat yield. From these results, we can conclude that when practicing POST only weed management strategies, application timing is vital for the prevention of corn loss and that implementation of late-season weed management programs can effectively reduce weed seed rain, therefore reducing weed seed bank densities.

Book excerpt: While not a historically problematic weed in Nebraska, Palmer amaranth has become increasingly problematic in many agronomic cropping systems. Throughout the state, several cohorts of Palmer amaranth have been found resistant to several different sites of action. Of major concern is a population found resistant to glyphosate the most common post-emergence herbicide in Nebraska. As chemical control methods are the most common forms of weed control throughout the state methods alternatives or enhancements are highly desired. Two field experiments were conducted in 2018 and 2019 at a grower's field near Carleton, Nebraska with the objectives to evaluate the effects of row spacing and herbicide programs and separately analyze the effect of overlapping residual herbicides on control of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth, gross profit margin, and benefit-cost ratios of these herbicide programs. Evaluation of the effect on row spacing found no significant effect of narrowing row spacing on control, density, or biomass reduction of GR Palmer amaranth across all herbicide programs. Herbicide program had a higher impact on GR Palmer amaranth control with all PRE fb EPOST except dicamba + chlorimuron/flumioxazin followed by dicamba and all PRE fb EPOST+RH providing greater than 85% control from 14 d after EPOST (DAEPOST) to 36 DAEPOST. Evaluation of overlapping residual herbicides on management of GR Palmer amaranth found that flumioxazin/pyroxasulfone/metribuzin provided 78% to 82% control from 14 DAEPOST to 70 DAEPOST in 2018 and 94% to 98% in 2019. Addition of dicamba + acetochlor EPOST to flumioxazin/pyroxasulfone/metribuzin provided 83% to 96% from 14 DAEPOST to 70 DAEPOST in 2018 and 99% in 2019. As the adoption of new application technologies, herbicide-resistant crops, and alternative weed control methods change with the times, surveys provide insight into changes in weed dynamics and crop production over time. Conducting multiple surveys over the course of several years provides a vital framework in developing future research and extension outreach. During the winter of 2019-2020, a survey of Nebraska stakeholders was carried to quantify crop production, weed control, and management practices throughout the state. In order of importance, Palmer amaranth, horseweed, common waterhemp, kochia, and giant ragweed were ranked the most problematic weeds statewide. Based on survey responses, 27% of respondents, cited integrated weed management systems as the primary concern for future research and extension outreach for the state of Nebraska.

Book excerpt: Palmer amaranth has been the most limiting weed in cotton production in the state of Arkansas for many years. Recently, resistance of Palmer amaranth to the protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting site of action has been discovered at various locations across the cotton-producing region of the state. Cotton varieties have been developed with resistance to synthetic auxin (WSSA Group 4) herbicides. However, research to date has shown PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth to be more difficult to control with herbicides that target alternative sites of action. Herbicide efficacy is also known to vary with weed size, varying spray parameters, and environmental conditions. Preliminary research on control of PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth with preemergence cotton herbicides suggests that herbicide mixtures containing fluometuron are the most consistent option for longevity of control. Preliminary results of postemergence (POST) experiments assessing control of PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth in herbicide-resistant cotton were inconclusive. Limited rainfall impacted both POST and residual weed control. When attempting to salvage a cotton crop, weed size plays an extremely important factor in whether the weeds will be controlled. Two-pass salvage treatments were effective in dicamba-resistant cotton containing mixtures of glufosinate or glyphosate and dicamba and showed little variation in control of large (taller than 15 cm) Palmer amaranth. Interval between applications in a two-pass salvage treatment is influential on control of large weeds, although it does not ultimately affect seedcotton yield. Increasing carrier volume from 70 L ha-1 to 140 L ha-1 was a more important factor in maximizing efficacy of a dicamba application than switching from TTI to AirMix nozzles or increasing the dicamba rate from 560 to 1,120 g ae ha-1. Differences in control between PPO-susceptible and PPO-resistant populations were also observed, as densities of surviving PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth were much higher than PPO-susceptible Palmer amaranth following dicamba application. Dicamba exhibited preemergence activity on Palmer amaranth; however, activity was heavily dependent on rainfall. Postemergence applications of dicamba increased control of Palmer amaranth. Spray nozzle selection influenced spray coverage and droplet size. Tolerance of cultivars containing Bollgard II® XtendFlexTM technology was over 90% at the end of the year regardless of herbicide.

Book excerpt: Since 2006, glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth has been considered the most problematic weed in agronomic crops across the Midsouth. As a result of glyphosate resistance, producers began to again utilize a diverse herbicide program for management of this weed, which consists of several soil-residual herbicides most notably diuron, fluometuron, fomesafen, and metolachlor. Fluridone inhibits phytoene desaturase in plants, and is unique in that its mechanism of action (MOA) is not currently registered for use in cotton. Studies were conducted to determine the length of residual that fluridone provides in controlling Palmer amaranth in Arkansas glyphosate- and glufosinate-resistant cotton programs and along field margins in comparison to other soil-residual herbicides. Furthermore, studies were conducted to assess the persistence of fluridone in Arkansas soils and the risk for injury to crops subsequently planted following fluridone use in cotton. Regardless of the cotton program, fluridone failed to provide season-long control of Palmer amaranth; hence, reducing the number of postemergence applications will not be recommended when applying fluridone at cotton planting. Additionally, fluridone failed to provide season-long control of Palmer amaranth along ditchbanks over that of other labeled soil-residual herbicides; however, when applied under favorable conditions fluridone applied preplant incorporated provided extended control of Palmer amaranth with or without a sequential application. Injury to wheat as a rotational crop from an application of fluridone to cotton was greater than that of other crops commonly rotated with cotton; albeit, injury was not severe enough to result in wheat yield reductions. Although fluridone did not provide season-long control of Palmer amaranth, introducing a herbicide with a unique MOA into current cotton would be beneficial for reducing the risk of resistance to herbicides that are currently used in cotton.

This herbicide revolutionized weed control and crop management. Widespread adoption of this technology and extensive use of glyphosate led to intense selection pressure for evolution of GR weeds. In 2005, GR Palmer amaranth was suspected in North Carolina. A survey detected GR populations in 49 of 290 fields sampled. ALS-inhibitor resistance was also detected in 52 fields. Five fields had populations exhibiting multiple resistance to both glyphosate and ALS-inhibitors. Experiments were conducted to determine the resistance mechanism of GR Palmer amaranth. A GR biotype exhibited a 20-fold level of resistance compared to a glyphosate-susceptible (GS) biotype. Shikimate accumulated in GS but not GR plants after glyphosate application. Maximum absorption was observed by 12 hours after treatment (HAT), and was similar among biotypes except at 6 HAT, where GS plants absorbed 67% more than GR plants. Distribution of 14C was similar among biotypes in (42%), above (30%), and below (22%) the treated leaf and in roots (6%). This work did not lead to a suggestion a resistance mechanism. Field experiments were conducted to develop management strategies for GR Palmer amaranth in cotton. One evaluated residual control of Palmer amaranth by various herbicides. Of herbicides typically applied PRE or pre-plant, fomesafen, flumioxazin, and pyrithiobac were most effective. Pyrithiobac and S-metolachlor were the most effective postemergence (POST) herbicides. Flumioxazin and prometryn plus trifloxysulfuron were the most effective options for postemergence-directed applications. Integration of these herbicides into glyphosate-based systems could increase Palmer amaranth control. An experiment was conducted to evaluate PRE herbicides in a season-long system. Book excerpt: An opportunity for postemergence (POST) grass weed control has recently been approved with ALS-resistant grain sorghum, however, grass weed emergence timing and crop tolerance to grass competition are not well understood. To address the importance of POST application timing, a critical period of weed control (CPWC) for grass competition in grain sorghum was developed. Field experiments were established near Manhattan and Hays, KS in 2016 and 2017, and near Hutchinson, KS in 2017 to determine the CPWC. Each site provided a different grass species community. A total of ten treatments were included, with four treatments maintained weed-free until 2, 3, 5, or 7 weeks after crop emergence, four treatments receiving no weed control until 2, 3, 5, or 7 weeks after crop emergence, and two treatments were maintained weed-free or weedy all season. Treatments did not influence grain yield at Hutchinson because of a lack of season-long weed emergence. At Hays the CPWC began at crop emergence and ended 28 days later. At Manhattan the CPWC began 27 days after emergence and continued through grain harvest. The CPWC in grain sorghum depends on rainfall and competitive ability of the weed species. The start of the CPWC began when weeds emerged, thus a POST application should be targeted 14 to 21 days after emergence of grain sorghum. Emergence and development of large crabgrass, barnyardgrass, shattercane, and giant, green, and yellow foxtails were studied near Manhattan, KS after seeding on April 11, 2017. Barnyardgrass had the longest duration of emergence, beginning at 180 GDD after seeding and continuing through July. Large crabgrass had the shortest duration of emergence from 325 to 630 GDD after seeding. In general, all grasses began to emerge in late April and most species completed 90% emergence by early June. Grain sorghum is typically planted at this time, so grass weed control prior to planting is critical. Palmer amaranth is a troublesome weed in double-crop grain sorghum production fields in Kansas. The presence of herbicide-resistant populations limits options for weed management. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate 14 different herbicide programs for the management of atrazine-resistant Palmer amaranth in double-crop grain sorghum at Manhattan and Hutchinson, KS in 2016 and 2017. Programs included eight PRE only and six PRE followed by POST treatments. Programs that had very long chain fatty acid-inhibiting herbicides provided greater control of atrazine-resistant Palmer amaranth by three weeks after planting sorghum. Programs of PRE followed by POST provided greater control of both atrazine-resistant and -susceptible Palmer amaranth by eight WAP compared to PRE alone. These results illustrate the value of residual herbicides, as well as an effective postemergence application, in double-crop grain sorghum. Early season grass and Palmer amaranth control with the use of residual herbicides such as very long chain fatty acid-inhibitors provide a competitive advantage to grain sorghum. Utilizing weed emergence patterns to time effective POST applications, in unison with residual herbicides, will provide season-long weed control in Kansas grain sorghum fields.

Acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor-/glyphosate-resistant (GR) PA has been confirmed in Nebraska and is widespread in several counties. Soybean resistant to isoxaflutole/glufosinate/glyphosate has been developed to provide additional herbicide sites of action for control of herbicide-resistant weeds. The objectives of this study were to evaluate herbicide programs for control of ALS inhibitor/GR PA and their effect on PA density and biomass, as well as soybean injury and yield in isoxaflutole/glufosinate/glyphosate-resistant soybean. A PRE herbicide fb glufosinate controlled PA 80%-99% 21 d after late-POST in 2018 and reduced density 89%-100% in 2018 and 58%-100% in 2019 at 14 d after early-POST. Weed-crop competition models offer a significant tool for understanding and predicting crop yield losses due to crop-weed interference. Within current empirical models, weed biological characteristics are unknown, which limits understanding of weed growth in competition with crops and how that competition affects crop growth parameters. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of center-pivot and subsurface drip irrigation on the average evapotranspiration (ETa) of PA grown in corn, soybean, and fallow in south central Nebraska. Results suggest irrigation affects subplot ETa differences early in the growing season, but crop system and progression of plant growth with available water have a greater effect on ETa differences than irrigation type later in the growing season. Thus, crop management will likely have greater effects on PA ETa values than irrigation practices alone. This study provides base data on weed evapotranspiration and its relation to weed morphological features for future use in mechanistic weed-crop competition models. Velvetleaf is another troublesome broadleaf weed that competes with agronomic crops for resources such as soil moisture. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of degree of water stress on the growth and fecundity of velvetleaf using soil moisture sensors under greenhouse conditions. The results of this study demonstrate that velvetleaf can survive ≥ 50% field capacity (FC) continuous water stress conditions, although with reduced leaf number, plant height, and growth index compared to 75% and 100% FC.

Book excerpt: The resistance of Palmer amaranth (PA) and the tolerance (natural resistance) of pitted morningglory (PM) to glyphosate have made these species among the most common and troublesome weeds in the southeastern U.S. since the adoption of glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops. Populations of GR PA (R1 and R2) were identified in Mississippi. The inheritance of glyphosate resistance was examined in reciprocal crosses (RC) between glyphosate-resistant (R) and -susceptible (S) parents (Female-S × Male-R, S/R, and Female-R × Male-S, R/S), and second reciprocal crosses (2RC) (Female-S/R × Male-S/R, S/R//S/R, and Female-R/S × Male-R/S, R/S//R/S). Dose-response assays resulted in 17- to 4-fold resistance to glyphosate compared with S. Population S accumulated 325- and 8-times more shikimate at the highest glyphosate dose than in R1 and R2, respectively. cDNA sequence analysis of the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene indicated no target site mutation. Genomes of R1, R2, RC, and 2RC contained from 1- to 59-fold more copies of EPSPS gene than S; EPSPS was highly expressed in R1 and R/S, but was poorly expressed in S, S/R, and R2. EPSPS activity was lower in S and S/R than in R and R/S, glyphosate absent; all were inhibited by glyphosate. Western Blot analysis confirmed an increased EPSPS protein level to EPSPS copy number correlation. Thus, the level of resistance was decidedly influenced by the direction of the cross. R and S female plants were reproductively isolated and seed were still produced, suggesting that PA can produce seed both apomictically and sexually (facultative apomixis). This mode of reproduction determined the low copy number inheritance, as well as guaranteeing the GR trait stability in the R populations. Dose-response assays resulted in 2.6-fold variability in tolerance to glyphosate between the most tolerant (MT) and the least tolerant (LT) PM populations. The level of tolerance positively correlated with the time of exposure to GR-crop system. Less shikimate was recovered in MT as compared to LT. Levels of aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) were not different between populations and sarcosine was not present in either populations. Consequently, metabolism of glyphosate to AMPA or sarcosine is not a common factor in explaining natural resistance levels.
