Colorado has made strides in improving the quality of AECs across the state in recent years, but much work remains to be done to ensure that all alternative education programs are of high quality. The state must ensure educational programs and pathways support students both socio-emotionally and academically by putting its best teachers and leaders in front of the most at-risk students, providing the wrap around supports necessary to ensure a rich academic environment and thoughtful pathways that better align student's needs and the programs directly correlated to their success. All Colorado kids deserve an education that prepares them to pursue college, careers and happiness. The main focus of this book for the U.S. Department of Labor is community- or district-based programs that have as their primary focus the re-engagement of out-of-school youth in learning in order to better prepare these youth to successfully enter high growth occupations and careers. This book examines the academic programming in alternative education programs by reviewing the literature specifically focused on the academic programs in alternative education and summarizing a survey of fifteen alternative education programs. It suggests options for further research on this topic based on the literature review and reports from the programs surveyed.

Yet fewer than 40 percent of entrants complete an undergraduate degree within six years. This fact has put pressure on community colleges to improve academic outcomes for their students. Redesigning America’s Community Colleges is a concise, evidence-based guide for educational leaders whose institutions typically receive short shrift in academic and policy discussions. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of an independent study-based curricular design as a means of recovering dropped out youth and preparing them to succeed in postsecondary settings. The study focused on a dropout recovery program located in a large, urban public school district. The program offered dropouts a reduced-credit, faster-track pathway to a high school diploma. The study utilized a success case study design in order to examine three sites within the program that were highly successful at graduating students, and one that performed below the program average. The goals of the study were to learn why some sites were outperforming others within the program at graduating students, and whether there were common best practices employed at the strong performing sites. Additionally, the study sought to ascertain the impact of the program on graduates who later pursued postsecondary educational offerings. Data were collected through interviews of staff and former graduates, site observations, as well as examinations of program documents. I compared data gathered at the success case sites and the underperforming site to identify commonalities between site practices and graduates' recollections of how the program impacted their academic trajectory. Chief among the findings were that staff at high performing sites within the program shared a core set of four common beliefs, out of which sprang a number of shared best practices. These beliefs and practices had arisen absent the influence of an overall programmatic design. In addition, the study found that the program had an extremely positive impact upon graduates. In particular, the program changed their views of education from highly negative to positive, and led to high levels of satisfaction in postsecondary settings, as well as high rates of persistence. My findings suggest that the implementation of independent study-based curriculum and reduced-credit pathways to a high school diploma should be examined carefully by school districts as a potentially highly successful means for addressing the nation's dropout crisis, but that care should be taken to ensure that program design and maintenance allows for top-tier performance.

Book excerpt: Today, postsecondary engineering education stands perched on the edge of transformation. A precursor to impending change is national recognition that nontraditional students0́4adults and working students with socioeconomic backgrounds not currently well-represented in engineering education0́4possess untapped potential to improve the diversity as well as increase the size of the U.S. engineering workforce. To support nontraditional student participation in engineering, a qualitative investigation was undertaken to examine the ways in which nontraditional engineering undergraduates defined and experienced success during their engineering education. It is thought that, through a deeper, richer understanding of the ways in which the nontraditional engineering undergraduates overcome barriers and experience success, newer, more impactful alternative pathways that assist nontraditional students in becoming part of the engineering profession can be envisioned and developed. During this study, 14 nontraditional student participants were purposefully sampled from the population of undergraduates who participated in a distance-delivered, alternative engineering transfer program offered at a western, land-grant, public university between 2009-2015. Qualitative data from in-depth interviews were used to co-develop life history0́3style narratives for each of the participants. Completed narratives chronologically ordered and richly described the participants0́9 experiences leading up to, happening during, and occurring after their engineering education. Narrative analysis revealed that the nontraditional student participants viewed their own educational success contextually, relationally, and in terms of their long-term goals for social mobility through engineering careers. Additionally, the distance-delivered alternative engineering transfer program was seen to promote their educational success in three ways: a) working to promote long-range career goals through job market signaling, b) enabling academic bootstrapping in an adult learning environment, and c) maintaining connection to community-based support through place. Recommendations for engineering programs that seek to broaden nontraditional student participation are offered.
