Book excerpt: I'm coming for you is a bad movie line. For Death it is a promise. We tend to like to avoid the concept of death, but it keeps finding us. So we put together a book. But what to call it. We were sick of death coming in and taking friends and family, giving no regard for us except to leer from the darkness. The answer came, in a callout to Steven Colbert: we opted for Deathiness. Death didn't like that. I believe it was her fault (oh hell yes, death is a woman) that I found myself being carried out of the house with a couple of pulmonary embolisms and realizing that most people who were in my condition met the grim reaper. So I resolved to change my life, be a nicer person, give up cheese products and... Nah, I decided to invite the B Cubed family on board to talk about it and maybe have a laugh at Death's expense. So Death, be warned: We're Coming for You! And we're doing it with these great stories: In "The Bodies We Carry" K.G. Anderson, one of the great up and comers writing about how to make death more real. In "The Miracle Man" Jim Wright gives another chilling look into the world he created for the Best Selling Alternative Apocalypse. In "Instructions for My Executors" Clare Marsh treats us with a poetic look at death and what the family should do. In "Rule 49" (perhaps my favorite) has Maureen McGuirk looking at death as a real entity and shows us their many faces. In "Spoons", Jay Wilburn dips into a well of thought and sensitivity as he makes death into a gentle journey that is not taken alone. And "Gallows Humor?" Michael Mansaray takes a unique look at the inevitability of death that must be read to appreciate. "For What is a Man" is David Foster's quest for an answer to the question with no real unswer. "Mudpaws and the Tall Thing" Frances Rowat is a touching story reminiscent of the work Mike Resnick that sees the worlds end from the perspective of a lovely dog. "A Comedian's Valediction Forbidding Mourning" is the wonderful Larry Lefkowitz's reminder to laugh. "The Thing Underneath" is a wee bit of horror by James Van Pelt. "Have You Ever Been Experienced?" is an old theme made fresh by Paula Hammond, as she shows the power of being addicted to death. "Death's Scout" is Mark O. Decker thoughtful poem that I'll let you read rather than read about. It's that good. "Papercut" by Larry Hinkle will make you throw this book out the window in disgust and horror, only to stop the car and retrieve the book to read it again. "Death's Doorway" is Diana Hauer's incredible story of those who walk beside us through that final gate. "Missing" by Robin Pond is that story that makes you want to read a hundred more just like it. In "Final Questions," Chris Kuriata, adds to the duties of death to in this thoughtful look at unanswered questions of the dead. "The Borrower", by Katie Sakanai speaks to the value of the human spirit across space and time. "Three O'Clock" is Lamont Turner's nicely done story on making the best out of a bad situation. "To Do Right", by Cory Swanson, shows us a better way to die. A good end to life is not to be underestimated. "Old Forgotten Grave" by Bill Camp is a familiar but comfortable reminder that all of us will be forgotten. "Ashes," by my dear friend Lizzy Shannon is a touching look at the end of life. "The Devil's Backbone," by Larry Hodges, brings his trademark humor to what happens when the Devil takes on the Good Humor man. "Written in Stone," by Lauren Stoker. "Death," by Robert Armstrong The Four Horsemen (and Women) of the Apocalypse by Sarina Dorie "Deathventures, Inc." by Robinne Weiss "Rest In Virtual" by Tommy Blanchard Loving Death in New York, is poet Alicia Hilton's look at death on the streets of the Big Apple. Life Long Love by the inspired you man, Sirrus James. Not old enought to drink, but old enough to understand love.

Book Alternatives to Involuntary Death

Download or read book Alternatives to Involuntary Death written by Timothy Leary and published by Ronin Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is increasingly on the agenda for baby boomers moving ever closer to it. Timothy Leary brings some startlingly fresh ideas to this topic. Fundamentally, he claims, we have been brainwashed by our institutions — government, organized religion, the healthcare industry — to accept death as an inevitable end. Leary argues instead that death is misunderstood, that we don't have to die, and that there are "commonsense alternatives." His theory rests on the transhumanist approach that says human beings are evolving into spiritual machines — beings that are part human and part machine and eventually will not die as the term is commonly understood. Being fitted with machine parts like bionic knees is part of this process. And as we evolve through the cybernetic age, he says, we will gain new wisdom that broadens our definition of personal immortality and gene-pool survival — the "postbiologic option of the information species."

Book excerpt: Discover Insights about Coping with Life's Most Feared Mystery This book will help anyone who is interested in learning more about death, coping with a loss, approaching death, or explaining death to a child. It is an exploratory journey that includes multiple viewpoints, including Steve Jobs's embrace of his death, Ray Kurzweil's striving for immortality, and Joseph Campbell's view of death as the "ornament of life." The book looks at death from the perspectives of atheists, Christians, and Tibetan Buddhists, among many others. Interestingly, it considers the often unexplored aspects such as the curious relationship between death and ayahuasca. It is a guidebook, offering insights and comfort on a topic that many find frightening or macabre. The author grew up with a skeleton in his living room, and surrounded by other symbols of death. His unusual upbringing makes him uniquely qualified to serve as guide. As you join him in discovering more about death, you will find yourself enjoying a fuller life. Highlights of what you will learn... Theories from Great Contemporary Minds Spiritual Insights Scientific Discoveries Personal Reflections Reviews "In Loren Mayshark's Death: An Exploration: Learning to Embrace Life's Most Feared Mystery, he writes, 'experiencing death has dragged me into emotional pits and has also compelled me to deep contemplation. This journey has filled me with wonderment as well as remorse.' I found those sentences to be humble ones which transmit the abstract premise of his book into something we can explore in a concrete way. His narrative voice is at the same time both scholarly and personal. It lets the reader join him in trying to figure out what this concept of death is. His observations emerge out of his curious youth, grow to an adolescent's pondering, and then further mature with the wise citations of well-researched information from philosophers, scientists, and other distinguished thinkers. The author makes no definite assertions in his book, allowing the reader to stay open to nuance. Like Mayshark, we are all immature in answering death's puzzling question." -Peter Hamilton, author ofThe Devil Hates a Coward "In Death: An Exploration: Learning to Embrace Life's Most Feared Mystery, Loren Mayshark shares his personal inquiry of what death is or could be in the stories of others as they faced the inevitable and find solace in religion, science, nature, spiritual guidance. But the exploration doesn't stop there. While knowing and understanding death often remains a conundrum, this exploratory primer suggests what is separate can be who≤ what defines death, defines life. Death: An Exploration: Learning to Embrace Life's Most Feared Mystery is a terrific read for those embarking on their pursuit of the illusive, the contrary, the inescapable: death... and life." -Linda A. Lavid, author of The Dying Of Ed Mees

Book Death Dying and Beyond

Download or read book Death Dying and Beyond written by ALOK PANDEY and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2010-11-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one thing that is at once most predictable and unpredictable about life is death. Yet, man lives, forgetting death as if he were immortal. Between these two - a visible manifestation of death and an innate sense of immortality - hangs the balance of life, a paradox which we do not easily understand. What if death is not an end, but a passage to another life? What if rebirth is not about retribution, but is a form of evolution? What if life and death are not opposites but work towards a common goal? There must be a larger picture, a missing piece of the puzzle to complete the story and make our understanding whole. How should we deal with trauma and loss, suffering and pain and other ethical and existential issues? Death, Dying and Beyond is an attempt to find answers to these and many other related issues, theoretically and practically, supported by anecdotes and experiences arising from brushes with death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research for this work was undertaken during my tenure of a Senior Tutor ship in the Faculty of Arts and Music at the University of Otago (1983-85). Versions of some of the chapters herein have already been accepted for publication in the form of journal articles in Philosophy, Philosophy East and West, Sophia, and Religious Studies. My thanks to the editors and publishers concerned for permission to reuse this material. A number of people have assisted me in various ways. My greatest debt is to Graham Oddie, who supervised my doctoral research in this area and with whom I have had the benefit of innumerable discussions on these and other philosophical matters. I am very grateful for all I have learned from him. I would also like to thank: Bob Durrant for commenting helpfully on Chapter 2; the late Jim Harvie, both for his valuable suggestions (particularly regarding the material of Chapter 4) and for his encouraging enthusiasm for the whole project; George Hughes for his extensive comments on the whole work; and (for various points of detail) Alan Musgrave, Charles Pigden and Bryan Wilson. Despite much good advice, however, I have some times preferred to go my own way, recalling Blake's proverb: "If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise. " With regard to the typing of the manuscript I am indebted to the word-processor wizardry of Jane Tannahill and Christine Colbert.

Book excerpt: Living healthily for centuries is no longer a sci-fi prospect. It is very likely that the first person to live to 200 years in good health is already alive – scientific and technological advances of today are starting to produce medicines and treatments which tackle aging directly. The true debate is no longer about whether we can extend our lives and fight death – it is about whether we should. If advances in medicine and engineering protect you and others from aging, diseases, injuries, and accidents, allowing you to live as a healthy 25-year-old for as long as you wanted (where death could only visit you if, and when, you wished), should you say yes to this future? And what happens if enough people say yes? Will overpopulation be inevitable? Will we lose our identity as humans by relinquishing mortality? Will humanity be challenging the natural and divine order? Will we grow lazy and complacent? Will the divide between the rich and poor grow? Or is overcoming aging and disease a mandate of medicine and a moral imperative to aim for? Perhaps even our destiny as humans? In the same way push back on hunger, pestilence, and violence, should we end the cycle of suffering and death which aging brings to us all? In Should You Die? Augusto T.S. Cruz weighs in on these questions. The author methodically picks apart arguments supporting each side of the debate, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, making the book an excellent primer for those interested in the discussion, and a helpful guide for those already involved.
