Book Alternative Arrangements for Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Alternative Arrangements for Marine Fisheries written by Francis T. Christy, Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maintenance of the freedom of fishing in the face of the changing circumstances that were occurring at the time of this title’s original publication in 1973 had produced several damaging consequences. It had led to considerable waste, in both biological and economic terms, and had been the source of increasing conflict. This waste can only be prevented by the adoption of management measures and by the removal of the condition of free and open access. This book explores various techniques for this, and will be of interest to students of environmental management.

Book Sustaining Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Sustaining Marine Fisheries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-03-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.

Book Fisheries Economics Volume I

Bringing into focus a wide range of inquiry, this volume concentrates most particularly on the traditional economic problem of optimal resource allocation. Individual papers examine fundamental issues including, the lack of efficiency of open access and the specification of exactly what dynamic efficiency entails. Fisheries Economics is an invaluable research reference collection for the libraries of academic and other professional economists, as well as an indispensable resource for those studying across the fields of natural resources, fisheries economics and particularly fisheries management.

Book The Closing of the Frontier

Download or read book The Closing of the Frontier written by John G. Butcher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first on the history of the marine fisheries of Southeast Asia. It takes as its central theme the movement of fisheries into new fishing grounds, particularly the diverse ecosystems that make up the seas of Southeast Asia. This process accelerated between the 1950s and 1970s in what the author calls the great fish race . Catches soared as the population of the region grew, demand from Japan and North America for shrimps and tuna increased, and fishers adopted more efficient ways of locating, catching, and preserving fish. But the great fish race soon brought about the severe depletion of one fish population after another, while pollution and the destruction of mangroves and coral reefs degraded fish habitats. Today the relentless movement into new fishing grounds has come to an end, for there are no new fishing grounds to exploit. The frontier of fisheries has closed. The challenge now is to exploit the seas in ways that preserve the diversity of marine life while providing the people of the region with a source of food long into the future.
