This book was released on 2002-03-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requested that the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources of the National Research Council (NRC) convene a panel of experts to examine whether publicly funded agricultural research has influenced the structure of U.S. agriculture and, if so, how. The Committee to Review the Role of Publicly Funded Agricultural Research on the Structure of U.S. Agriculture was asked to assess the role of public-sector agricultural research on changes in the size and numbers of farms, with particular emphasis on the evolution of very-large-scale operations.

Book Opportunities use and transfer of systems research methods in agriculture to developing countries

Download or read book Opportunities use and transfer of systems research methods in agriculture to developing countries written by Goldsworthy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1993, ISNAR, in collaboration with International Consortium for Application of Systems Approaches, organized a three-day workshop on systems approaches and modelling for agricultural development. Sponsored by the Dutch Ministry for Development Cooperation, the workshop was attended by participants from 12 national agricultural research systems (NARS), nine international agricul tural research centers (lARCs), and five advanced research organizations (AROs). Although application of systems approaches in agricultural research and resource management is a rather new field, there is already increasing demand for implemen tation of these approaches. This will require a critical mass of specialists in the NARS and IARCs. Before this critical mass can be obtained, however, the experience that has been gained in this area needs to be evaluated, further possibilities need to be explored, and new objectives and targets need to be set. This book, which contains the papers presented at the workshop, assesses the state of the art of systems approaches in agricultural research, resource management, and rural planning. It also gives an impression of the evolution of this interdisciplinary field and its use in national and international research centers. Another, less tangible, outcome of the workshop was its contribution toward strengthening the network of NARS, lARCs, and AROs. It gave participants and organizers a chance to develop contacts, and provided an opportunity to make the first proposals for collaborative programs. Special thanks are due to Peter Goldsworthy and Luc Boerboom for their crucial role in making the workshop a success in this regard.

Book Innovative Extension Approaches in Technology Transfer

Download or read book Innovative Extension Approaches in Technology Transfer written by B. S. Hansra and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 2005 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Seminar on Alternative Extension Approaches in Technology Transfer held at Mitraniketan KVK on 21- 22, February 2004 was one of the most successful scientific deliberations in the recent past. Most of the successful alternative extension approaches in technology transfer were presented and highlighted. There was a tremendous response from various R & D institutions to present their approaches for sharing at a common platform without any prejudice. The business of technology transfer is the secret of success to every R & D institutions, but this was a platform envisaged to share experiences. We take the opportunity to thank the entire authors for the contribution of their articles to this book.

Book Systems approaches for agricultural development

Download or read book Systems approaches for agricultural development written by Frits Penning de Vries and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium In the next decades, agriculture will have to cope with an ever-increasing demand for food and raw basic materials on the one hand, and with the necessity to use resources without further degrading or exhausting the environment on the other hand, and all this within a dynamic framework of social and economic conditions. Intensification, sustainability, optimizing scarce resources, and climate change are among the key issues. Organized thinking about future farming requires forecasting of consequences of alternative ways to farm and to develop agriculture. The complexity of the problems calls for a systematic approach in which many disciplines are integrated. Systems thinking and systems simulation are therefore indispensable tools for such endeavours. About 150 scientists and senior research leaders participated in the symposium 'Systems Approaches for Agricultural Development' (SAAD) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand, in December 1991. The symposium had the following objectives: - to review the status of systems research and modeling in agriculture, with special reference to evaluating their efficacy and efficiency in achieving research goals, and to their application in developing countries; - to promote international cooperation in modeling, and increase awareness of systems research and simulation. The symposium consisted of plenary sessions with reviews of major areas in systems approaches in agriculture, plus presentations in two concurrent sessions on technical topics of systems research. Subjects of studies were from tropical and temperate countries.

Download or read book An innovation systems approach to enhanced farmer adoption of climate ready germplasm and agronomic practices written by Hellin, Jonathan and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2050, climate change is likely to reduce maize production globally by 3–10 percent and wheat production in developing countries by 29–34 percent. Even without climate change, the real costs of wheat and maize will increase by 60 percent between 2000 and 2050; climate change could make the figure substantially greater. Food security, despite the above, may be possible if agricultural systems are transformed through improved seed, fertilizer, land use, and governance.
