Book Alternative and Cost effective Bridge Approach Slabs

Download or read book Alternative and Cost effective Bridge Approach Slabs written by Ganesh Thiagarajan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The primary objectives of the proposed project are to investigate the causes for any bumps at the end of the bridge approach slab, and to develop remedial measures or alternative designs for a replacement. It is clear that the problem stems from geotechnical considerations. In many instances compaction of soil under uncertain conditions when the bridge is being constructed may not be properly achieved. Hence, the geotechnical issues are likely to continue to exist. From the structures' point of view, how we can design a bridge approach slab to save construction costs given a certain settlement is a question to answer"--Technical report documentation page.

Book Bridge Approach Slabs for Missouri DOT

Download or read book Bridge Approach Slabs for Missouri DOT written by Ganesh Thiagarajan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a recent study on cost efficient alternative bridge approach slab (BAS) designs (Thiagarajan et al. 2010) has recommended three new BAS designs for possible implementation by MoDOT namely a) 20 feet cast-inplace slab with sleeper slab (CIP20SLP) - for new construction on major roads, b) 25 and 20 feet precast-prestressed slab with sleeper slab (PCPS20SLP)- for replacement and new construction applications on major and minor roads, and c) 25 feet modified BAS without a sleeper slab for new CIP construction on minor roads (CIP25NOSLP). The objective of the project here is to evaluate and compare the field performance of recommended BAS designs, their constructability, and their impact on cost and schedule to the current MoDOT BAS design. Two PCPS20SLP, one CIP20SLP and two CIP25NOSLP implementations have been implemented and studied for this report. One PCPS20SLP panel was also tested in the laboratory for several washout conditions and for its ultimate capacity. Based on field observations, data recorded and analyzed, preconstruction and post construction cost analyses this study has found that all the suggested designs are performing well and are lower in cost compared to current designs used in practice.

Book Field Performance of Alternative and Cost Efficient Cast in Place and Precast Prestressed Concrete Bridge Approach Slabs

Download or read book Field Performance of Alternative and Cost Efficient Cast in Place and Precast Prestressed Concrete Bridge Approach Slabs written by Nathan Price Muncy and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In December of 2010, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) investigated alternative cost efficient bridge approach slabs (BASs). New BAS designs were subsequently developed and had a projected cost savings up to twenty-four percent with anticipated equal or better structural performance. A precast-prestressed (PCPS) BAS was introduced as an alternative to traditional BASs that offers advantages such as rapid construction and improved long-term durability. The three new BAS designs were implemented into in-situ bridge projects by MoDOT and the field performance was evaluated within this research study. Field testing of each BAS was performed using two MoDOT HS20 trucks. Various instrumentation including inclinometers and high precision surveying equipment were used to monitor the BAS performance during field load testing. The innovative PCPS BAS was instrumented with internal vibrating wire strain gauges (VWSG) and moisture gauges. Finite element models (FEM) were constructed to verify the field load testing behavior and to predict the BASs future behavior. A full-scale PCPS panel was tested in the Structural Engineering Research Laboratory (SERL) in Butler Carlton Hall on the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) Campus to determine the performance under various washout conditions (i.e. lengths). The support rotations, deflections, and strains were noted. In addition, the failure of the panel was tested to verify the intended design strength of the precast-prestressed approach slab"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Precast Prestressed Bridge Approach Slab

Download or read book Precast Prestressed Bridge Approach Slab written by Balu Gudimetla and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge approach slabs (BAS) are transition slabs used to connect the roadway with the bridge. Among the various problems bridge approach slabs experience, differential settlement is the found to be the major cause leading to approach slab distress. The two suggested alternatives are also effective for rapid replacement/repair operations on bridge approach slabs. A life cycle analysis (LCCA) was completed to study comparative costs for urban and rural traffic patterns and to investigate the economic effectiveness of the precast prestressed slab designs. The MoDOT BAS design along with another design alternative called BAS incorporating elastic support (BAS-ES) were included in the LCCA procedure to study the effectiveness of the precast prestressed alternatives. When present value of total costs are considered, the Fully Precast Prestressed - BAS design is the most cost-effective when AADT counts are high, such as with urban traffic demands.

Book Bridge Approach Slab Analysis and Design Incorporating Elastic Soil Support

Download or read book Bridge Approach Slab Analysis and Design Incorporating Elastic Soil Support written by Shuang Ma and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of equations necessary for the analysis of finite bridge approach slabs (BAS) on elastic soil support is reported in this thesis. Results are compared for moments and shear forces governing the design for a wide range of values of soil elastic modulus ranging from dense sand to very loose sand. Results from systematic studies assuming wash out of soil support are also presented using a customized uniaxial finite-difference model. The influences of wash-out length and location have been discussed. Moreover, the functions of sleeper slab at the pavement end of the conventional design are studied. It is replaced by a modified end-section reinforcement detailing to provide enhanced local two-way action, providing increased flexural rigidity in the direction transverse to the traffic direction. An Excel-based VBA program is developed for application of designing bridge approach slab incorporating partial elastic soil support. Additionally, a biaxial finite-difference model is developed using MATLAB for better understanding the performance of BAS in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Results from uniaxial and biaxial solutions are compared and discussed. Initial construction cost of this new design alternative is computed and presented to demonstrate that the BAS designed with consideration of elastic soil support results in a cost-effective design. Life cycle costs too are competitive if only agency costs are included, for rural traffic demands, this design is the most cost-effective alternatives among those considered.

Book Optimization of Bridge Approach Slab

Download or read book Optimization of Bridge Approach Slab written by Sheetal Vijay Ajgaonkar and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every US state Department of Transportation has its own practice for design and construction of Bridge Approach Slab (BAS). The objective of this thesis is to explore the usage of alternate innovative structural solution for Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), simple to implement in the field and to reduce the cost of construction when a Bridge Approach Slab is needed. A cost study was performed in order to determine the least cost slab design from the slabs data obtained from all the states. The cost was estimated based on the MoDOT costing method and was compared with the data gathered from other states' BAS. Analysis and design of various finite element BAS models were carried out in SAP to study the effect of span, reinforcement changes, and soil stiffness under the slab. This project study provides an overview of optimization of design and cost of Bridge Approach Slab.

Book Research Project No 682

Download or read book Research Project No 682 written by Bryant G. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cast-in-place (CIP) concrete slab bridge and the hollow core flat slab bridge are two very common bridge types utilized by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The CIP bridge is durable but has a long construction time while the hollowcore bridge has a short construction time but produces durability concerns. Trying to balance the speed of construction for hollow-core and the durability of CIP, the SCDOT commissioned this study to provide a recommendation for an alternative bridge type that could: 1) eliminate or minimize longitudinal cracking, 2) have a shorter erection time than the CIP flat slab system, and 3) have no restriction on ADTT and can be used on the National Highway System. There were two distinct phases in this research. In Phase 1, a thorough online survey and telephone interviews were conducted to investigate the pros and cons of existing short-span bridge systems used by other state departments of transportation. In addition, feedback from contractors and precast element fabricators in the Southeast region was also solicited. Based on this work, a precast bridge system known as the NEXT-D (Northeast Extreme Tee) beam was selected by the SCDOT for further testing and validation. The experimental and analytical validation along with the design of a 6 ft. wide section (NEXT-6) and an 8 ft. wide section (NEXT-8), with span lengths from 22 ft. to 40 ft., was the focus of Phase 2. The results of the experimental study indicated that U-shaped reinforcing bars and poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber reinforced ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC) were an effective combination when used for the shear key located between precast NEXT elements. These results were also used to calibrate analytical models which were used to better understand and quantify the load demands associated with this beam type. Using this new understanding, a set of new design guidelines for the new NEXT-6 and NEXT-8 bridge systems was developed. For the beam design, the AASHTO live load distribution factors for tee beams are recommended to be used. For the deck design, the AASTHO strip method is recommended with some modification. A simplified fourstep procedure was developed to assist bridge engineers in determining the design demands (positive and negative moments) on a onefoot strip of deck for Strength I and Service I limit states. The results of this study, field experience with existing cast-in-place and precast bridges and sound engineering judgment allow the investigators to believe with a reasonable degree of confidence that the construction of a bridge using the provided recommendations and new system will lead to durable bridges that are cost effective and can be constructed using an accelerated schedule. One of the immediate needs is to now share the results of this study with neighboring states, so that the investment of needed steel forms by precasters can result in similar precast pieces sold to multiple states.
