Book Method in Unit Delimitation

Download or read book Method in Unit Delimitation written by M.C.A. Korpel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume selected papers from several Pericope meetings have been combined into a thematic volume, dealing with the method of unit delimitation. A hitherto unnoticed Tibero-Palestinian manuscript from Paris is discussed, as well as the text divisions in the Leviticus and Joshua Codices from the Schoyen collection and a fifth-century lectionary. The volume closes with a proposal for a new polyglot Bible, containing data with regard to unit delimitation from our traditions, Hebrew, Greek, Syriac and Latin. The Pericope Series aims at making available data on unit delimitation found in biblical and related manuscripts to the scholarly world and provides a platform for evaluating this hitherto largely neglected evidence for the benefit of biblical interpretation.

Excerpt: ... wrath refused them aid; Their youth in fiery battle fell, As blooms untimely fade. For maidens came no marriage-day, No nuptial songs awoke; Their priests before the altars bled, And hearts of widows broke. Then God arose, as, cheered by wine, A sleeping warrior starts; With rankling shame to brand His foes He smote their hinder parts. And He rejected Joseph's tent, Nor tribe of Ephraim chose; The tribe of Judah He preferr'd, Where His lov'd Zion rose. His sanctuary there He built, High towering to the skies, And firm upon its deathless base As earth's foundation lies. His servant David then He call'd And from the sheepfold drew, From tending on the new-dropp'd lambs That sucked the parent ewe. To lead God's people, now his flock. New hopes and duties spring; But David strives with hand and heart To reign--a shepherd king. PSALM LXXVIII. HEXAMETER VERSION. EARKEN ye, O my people, attend to the voice of a teacher, And let your ears incline to the words of wisdom I utter. I would speak in a parable truths that belong to the present, Darkest sayings of old with an inner significant meaning, Which we have heard and known, and which our fathers have told us, Treasure entrusted to us that must not be selfishly hidden, But declared to the ages in honour and praise of Jehovah, Telling aloud His strength, His works, and marvellous doings. Therefore did He ordain a perpetual witness in Jacob, And in Israel of old was a statute Divinely appointed, Which He bade our sires explain to the minds of their children; So would the next generation be guards of the sacred tradition, Teaching in turn their sons, who would hand it down as an heirloom; That they, trusting in God, might bear His works in remembrance And keep His commandments, walking in virtue...

Book Psalms 38 and 145 of the Old Greek Version

Download or read book Psalms 38 and 145 of the Old Greek Version written by Randall X. Gauthier and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the critical, ongoing discussions in Septuagint Studies today concerns the issue of how texts were understood by their translators, and how those translations are able to provide the modern reader with clues to that original interpretation. In Psalms 38 and 145 of the Old Greek Version, Randall X. Gauthier provides a word by word, sentence by sentence, commentary on Psalms 38 and 145 in the Septuagint (LXX) version, or more accurately, the Old Greek (OG) version. Specifically, this study attempts to understand the semantic meaning of these psalms at the point of their inception, or composition, i.e. as translated literary units derivative of a presumed Semitic Vorlage.

Book excerpt: From a distinguished Oxford scholar and the author of A History of the Bible, an examination of how biblical translation works and why it matters Throughout history, most Jewish and Christian believers have understood scripture not in the languages in which it was first written but rather in their own—in translation. In The Word, acclaimed Bible scholar John Barton explores how saints and scholars have negotiated the profound challenges of translating the Bible while remaining faithful to the original. In addition to considering questions of literal versus free translation, literary style, inclusive language, and more, Barton draws out scriptural translation’s role at critical junctures in religious history. Far from a mere academic exercise, biblical translation has shaped how we answer faith’s most enduring questions about the nature of God, the existence of the soul, and the possibility of salvation.

Book Jewish and Christian Approaches to the Psalms

Download or read book Jewish and Christian Approaches to the Psalms written by Susan Gillingham and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have resulted in controversies between Jews and Christians over the centuries and it is only from the mid twentieth century onwards that the two traditions have worked side by side in the academy at least. This is one of the very few volumes on the psalms to incorporate scholarship from both these traditions for nearly a century, and the result is a rich celebration of these extraordinary ancient songs. This innovative essay collection draws together internationally renowned Jewish and Christian scholars of the Psalms, with one tradition responding to the other, in areas as diverse as Qumran studies, Medieval Jewish interpretation, Reception History, Liturgical Psalters and Chagall's Church Windows and more recent Literary Studies of the Psalter as a Book. The range of topics chosen will be of interest not only to those specializing in the Psalms but also to others interested more generally in biblical studies. Several musical and artistic representations of selected psalms are also included and the book includes a colour plate section which illustrates several of the chapters.

Book Where God Was Born

  • Author : Bruce Feiler
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2005-09-13
  • ISBN : 0060574879
  • Pages : 419 pages

Download or read book Where God Was Born written by Bruce Feiler and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2005-09-13 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when America debates its values and the world braces for religious war, Bruce Feiler, author of the New York Times bestsellers Walking the Bible and Abraham, travels ten thousand miles through the heart of the Middle East—Israel, Iraq, and Iran—and examines the question: Is religion tearing us apart ... or can it bring us together? Where God Was Born combines the adventure of a wartime chronicle, the excitement of an archaeological detective story, and the insight of personal spiritual exploration. Taking readers to biblical sites not seen by Westerners for decades, Feiler's journey uncovers little-known details about the common roots of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and affirms the importance of the Bible in today's world. In his intimate, accessible style, Feiler invites readers on a never-in-a-lifetime experience: Israel Feiler takes a perilous helicopter dive over Jerusalem, treks through secret underground tunnels, and locates the spot where David toppled Goliath. Iraq After being airlifted into Baghdad, Feiler visits the Garden of Eden and the birthplace of Abraham, and makes a life-threatening trip to the rivers of Babylon. Iran Feiler explores the home of the Bible's first messiah and uncovers the secret burial place of Queen Esther. In Where God Was Born, Feiler discovers that at the birth of Western religion, all faiths drew from one another and were open to coexistence. Feiler's bold realization is that the Bible argues for interfaith harmony. It cannot be ceded to one side in the debate over values. Feiler urges moderates to take back the Bible and use its powerful voice as a beacon of shared ideals. In his most ambitious work to date, Bruce Feiler has written a brave, uplifting story that stirs the deepest chords of our time. Where God Was Born offers a rare, universal vision of God that can inspire different faiths to an allegiance of hope.
