Los conocimientos y recomendaciones impresos en él, son el producto de nuestra larga experiencia de más de veinte años en el diagnóstico y tratamiento delos trastornos del lenguaje. Nos motiva su publicación, la observación muy frecuente de la inadecuada orientación que se le da a los problemas del lenguaje en nuestro país, los que incluso, muchas veces pasan desapercibidos, con las consiguientes consecuencias negativas para la persona que los padece. Así vemos, jóvenes con defectos en su lenguaje, fácilmente corregibles, los cuales le han ocasionado serios problemas emocionales y de conducta y dificultades en el aprendizaje escolar y superior. En él ofrecemos una idea general, tanto de los aspectos relacionados con el lenguaje normal como de sus trastornos. Está dedicado especialmente a los estudiantes de carreras universitarias relacionadas con la comunicación humana, tales como medicina, psicología, educación, educación especial, terapia del lenguaje; sin embargo, creemos que también puede ser de utilidad a profesionales relacionados con esta área. Siendo los maestros y los médicos, especialmente los pediatras, los primeros profesionales que se informan de los trastornos del lenguaje de un niño, se justifica que tengan amplia información de esta patología, lo cual se lograría si se incluyen estos conocimientos, como materia obligada en el pensum de sus estudios de pre-grado. Muchos errores se evitarían. Hemos incluido el estudio de los sonidos del lenguaje, el cual pertenece a la fonética, por considerar que todo profesional relacionado con la patología del lenguaje, debe estar informado de este aspecto. Nuestro objetivo se cumplirá, si este esfuerzo contribuye a la mejor formación profesional delos jóvenes de nuestro país, dentro del campo de lo que representa lo más jerárquico de la inteligencia del hombre, como lo es el lenguaje. Es de hacer notar en el libro, que la mayoría de los tratamientos expuestos en las diferentes patologías, tienen una forma especial, diferente, nuestra; lo cual se debe a que, en los primeros siete años de trabajo, tuve la necesidad de realizar personalmente los tratamientos de mis pacientes, por no haber terapistas del lenguaje en Maracaibo para ese entonces. Esto nos permitió experimentar suficientemente.

A menudo, dificultan el poder encontrar las palabras adecuadas y construir oraciones claras, así como, en los más mayores, comprender lo que leen o conseguir escribir correctamente. El vocabulario de estos niños suele ser muy básico y sus oraciones cortas, gramaticalmente incorrectas e incompletas. Generalmente, presentan problemas para seguir la conversación y pueden no entender los chistes. También es probable que hablen utilizando oraciones de dos palabras y que manifiesten malestar al intentar responder incluso a preguntas simples. Sin tratamiento, sus problemas de comunicación podrían agravarse y ocasionar dificultades emocionales, sociales y académicas; por este motivo, es importante tratar a los niños con trastornos del lenguaje lo más pronto posible. Los problemas con la comunicación oral son los más comunes, y es por ello que algunas de las actividades propuestas en este libro se dirigen a este colectivo. Y puesto que algunos niños también presentan comorbilidades, se ha destinado una apartado a los problemas con la lectura, bastante comunes en niños con dificultades del lenguaje.
