Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Rivieras of France Italy Tue Riviera may be described as a collection of jewels strung together at irregular intervals on a rough mountain chain. Some are genuine antiques, others are overlaid with modern workmanship, and they vary much in size and shape, but the metaphor holds good nevertheless. That one end of the chain should receive only scant attention from English people seems a mistake when it possesses some priceless gems, and even a pendant of unique charm in the Portofino promontory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rivieras Travellers to the south of France generally hurry straight through to Marseilles, and the winter season will not tempt them to linger. In warm weather there is much worth visiting on their way. In the northern part of their route, the best halting-places for two nights are Sens, with an excursion to Villeneuve sur Yonne; Tonnerre or Montbard, for the great Burgundian chateaux of Tanlay and Ancy le Franc, and the Abbey of Fontenay; Dijon, with excursions to Fontaine, Bussy Rabutin, and Beaune; Macon, with excursions to Cluny and Paray le Monial; Villefranche, for Ars and its sacred memories; Lyons, with an excursion to Vienne. After leaving Lyons, the most attractive resting-places are Valence, with its excursion to Cruas, Rochemaure, and Viviers; Montelimar, with its excursion to the celebrated Chateau de Grignan; the excursion to S. Paul trois Chateaux and S. Restitut from the station of Pierrelatte; Orange and the excursion to Vaison; Avignon, with the excursions to the (1) Pont du Gard, (2) Carpentras and Venasque, 3) Vaucluse, (4) Cavaillon and the Abbey of Silvacane, and (5) Tarascon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Example in this ebook The health of my wife having rendered it advisable to spend a winter in the South of France, I made arrangements to accompany her, and we left home in October 1876. After a short stay at Cannes and three months in Mentone, with marked improvement, we made a tour of four months in Italy, and then passing the remainder of the summer of 1877 in Switzerland, and the autumn chiefly in Biarritz and Pau, we spent a second winter in the Riviera, principally in Mentone, returning to England viâ Turin in May 1878. We had visited so many places, and seen so much while thus travelling during our first year, that it occurred to me, during our second sojourn at Mentone, to write out some notes of what had come within our knowledge which might prove both useful and interesting to others, and particularly to those who desired to winter in the Riviera. The field, however, was large, and to bring observation into reasonable compass I could only present general views—indications merely—of what we had seen; and, indeed, more than this I could scarcely have ventured upon, because I had not travelled with any idea of writing on the subject, and the notes I had kept were therefore scanty, although sufficient, with a vivid recollection of so much calculated to impress, to enable me to describe, as far as description is perhaps desirable. We saw much, and might have seen more within the time, but it was necessary to avoid fatigue. The descriptions contained in the following pages are therefore to be regarded not as finished pictures, but rather as the scenes of a moving panorama, exhibiting in succession views of the more salient points in the various places to which the reader will be taken, and depicted according to the fashion of such scenes, too roughly to bear close inspection or minute criticism. When people were compelled to travel slowly, they could take with them, and had time to read and digest full narratives of all they were about to see. It was by no means impossible to carry in the lumbering carriage, or to read during the leisurely journey, a whole library of such voluminous and now forgotten books as the Modern Traveller. But the rapidity of railway travelling has changed even the character of the guide-book, which, with more copious and complete information, has been so clipped and condensed, been made so concisely and methodically useful,—such a veritable multum in parvo,—that every other virtue is forgotten, and to take up a volume of Bædeker in order to beguile an hour, or even to obtain a general notion of a place, would be one of those freaks of which wise men are not readily guilty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Riviera: Pen and Pencil Sketches From Cannes to Genoa HE rapid course of events since the following pages were written has put some remarks in them out of date. Who would have imagined, as late as Midsummer of this year, that the route to Marseilles and Nice, through Paris, would before Michaelmas have become a thing of the past? Who could have expected that the misrule of ages on the banks of the Tiber would have come to an end, with its Imperial upholder, -melted away as with a breath, unregretted and almost unenquired for? But Nature remains unchanged, and it is mainly Nature with which I am concerned. The fair coast which is the subject of these sketches is as yet untouched by war; but it likewise has its aspirations, for which it would even pay the price of conflict. Only by an Imperial juggle have Nice and Mentone become vassals of France. The whole face of the land, the whole breath of the climate, the whole spirit of the people, are Italian; and by any French government which sets about redressing the wrongs of the Empire, to Italy they must be restored. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Nice HE amount of literature which has been written about the Riviera is very large, and it may well seem that there is no adequate necessity for increasing it. But that is a view to which I am unable to subscribe, and I will briefly give my reasons. The twentieth century is a hurrying age, and people require literary fare to be set before them without the trouble of going to look for it. The many notable works on the Riviera which have appeared from time to time written in English, French, and Italian, to say nothing of the classical authors, are most of them unattainable to the general reading public. Many are long out of print, many are too detailed and technical, and many again are out of date and inaccurate.
