Book River Rats

Download or read book River Rats written by Alison Hyland and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Hyland, as a boy growing up in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey from 1930-1938, saw the last boats being locked through the Delaware and Raritan Canal. He knew the old lock keepers and people who lived in the abandoned barges along the canal. The Raritan River and the D.& R. Canal provided recreation that was both exciting and extremely dangerous. Dan rode the ice flows on the Raritan after city work crews dynamited the frozen river in the early spring. He met strange and colorful people with names like "Corker Pete" and "Two-Cent Itszi." Dan and his buddies pulled a lot of stunts, caused mischief, and had run-ins with waterfront bullies. He enjoyed a free and virtually unsupervised boy's life. Money was nearly non-existent, so Dan and his friends pooled their resources, skills, and imaginations to find ways of earning money to go to the movies and acquire their play equipment. They learned how to capitalize on the neighborhood bootleggers and traveling junkmen. "River Rats: Growing Up on the Raritan River" is a memoir of the Great Depression. The stories are upbeat and at times humorous, reminiscent of the exploits of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

Book A Historical Journey Across Raritan Bay

Download or read book A Historical Journey Across Raritan Bay written by John Schneider and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic Raritan Bay stretches from Staten Island to Sandy Hook, including the beach communities of Monmouth County. With its proximity to New York City and Jersey shore attractions, the bay region has been the setting for compelling moments throughout American history. The native Lenapes harvested oysters and fished the waters along the bayshore generations before Dutch and English colonists reached their coasts. Local slave Titus Cornelius, or Colonel Tye, escaped from bondage and led Loyalist forces in raids to destabilize the area during the Revolutionary War. Steamships traversed the bay carrying hordes of vacationers from New York to newly established resorts along the "Riviera of New Jersey" in the early twentieth century. Climb aboard as author John Schneider takes readers on a historical journey across Raritan Bay.

Book The Delaware and Raritan Canal

Download or read book The Delaware and Raritan Canal written by Linda J. Barth and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly one hundred seventy years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey through bustling cities, suburban towns, and rural landscapes. One of the most successful towpath canals in the United States, the Delaware and Raritan carried more tonnage in 1866 than the famous Erie Canal. Transporting mainly anthracite coal, the Delaware and Raritan also stimulated industries as diverse as Roebling's wire-rope factory in Trenton, Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals in New Brunswick, and Fleischmann's Distillery in East Millstone. Today, as the centerpiece of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility. The Delaware and Raritan Canal introduces you to this manmade waterway through some two hundred historical photographs and postcards. In these pages, discover the locks, aqueducts, and machinery that enabled the waterway to transport military men and supplies between New York and Philadelphia during three wars. See how inventor John Holland used the canal to deliver his Holland VI submarine to Washington for its naval trials and how luxury yachts, including J.P. Morgan's Tarantula, cruised the waterway. The Delaware and Raritan Canal documents a historical and recreational gem in the heart of New Jersey.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Raritan Notes on a River and a Family For much of its course the River flows through a low slightly-undulating country. Off in the northwest there is a range of blue hills where the stream takes its head. It comes to life, runs its course, and passes out to the sea before a hundred miles are counted. No stately reach of thousands as the Mississippi; no lake like breadth of surface as the Saguenay or the lower Danube. The great streams go down to the ocean through broad basins and their shining silver faces may. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
