CHAPTER IV THE EASTERN COAST OF LABRADOR "The sea.gulls wheeled around the rocky cape And skimmed their long wings lightly o'er the flood; The fog rose up in many a spectral shape."--S. C. E. Mayo. "North, East, and South, there are reefs and breakers You would never dream of in smooth weather, That toss and gore the sea for acres, Bellowing and gnashing and snarling together."--/. R. Lowell. T7R0M the rocks of Battle Island some brighteyed boys discovered the smoke of the mail-steamer Virginia Lake coming down from St. Johns, Newfoundland, about ten o'clock on the morning of July 15th. At noon we were climbing up her steep steps as she lay at anchor at the northern mouth of the harbour, surrounded by a throng of fishing-boats. The Virginia Lake is a staunch screw steamer, considerably larger than the Home, and well fitted for conflicts with the ice, as she is employed as a sealer every spring. Her decks were cluttered with lumber, oil casks, and odds and ends of every description. She had not the air of a well-appointed yacht or tourist steamer, but both she and her bluff captain gave one the impression of staunchness and reliability. To the north there is but one lighthouse on the whole rugged coast, and no fog-horns in a region where fog abounds, as well as rocks and reefs innumerable and unchartered. A priori the trip seemed hazardous, but after one knows the Virginia Lake and Captain Parsons, a feeling of confidence takes the place of any anxiety that may have existed. The knowledge of the coast shown by the good captain, and his conscientious care in guiding the vessel are unexcelled. Every rock, every shoal, every tickle, he knows as one knows the streets of one's native city. A glance through the fog at a headland, the...

Book Settlement Subsistence and Change Among the Labrador Inuit

Download or read book Settlement Subsistence and Change Among the Labrador Inuit written by David C. Natcher and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 22, 2005, Inuit from communities throughout northern and central Labrador gathered in a school gymnasium to witness the signing of the Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement and to celebrate the long-awaited creation of their own regional self-government of Nunatsiavut. This historic agreement defined the Labrador Inuit settlement area, beneficiary enrollment criteria, and Inuit governance and ownership rights. Settlement, Subsistence, and Change Among the Labrador Inuit explores how these boundaries – around land, around people, and around the right to self-govern – reflect the complex history of the region, of Labrador Inuit identity, and the role of migration and settlement patterns in regional politics. Comprised of twelve essays, the book examines the way of life and cultural survival of this unique indigenous population, including: household structure, social economy of wildfood production, forced relocations and land claims, subsistence and settlement patterns, and contemporary issues around climate change, urban planning, and self-government.

Book excerpt: "One man, one dog, and a grand adventure across the rugged and mystical interior wilderness of Newfoundland. In April of 2017, Justin Barbour and his dog, Saku, arrived on the Rock's west coast to begin their quest to live the ways of old and see parts of the province's woods that few will ever get to see. A late winter lingers, and the duo must push over the Long Range Mountains and toward the interior of the island, where they hope lakes and rivers will be thawed to allow them to continue by inflatable raft. From sunrise to sunset, the reader will follow the companions as they navigate against the dangerous and unforgiving elements from west to east in an attempt to reach Cape Broyle, some 700 kilometres away. It was an adventure that spanned sixty-eight days and would push their limits further than they could have ever imagined. You'll see the island in a unique way, become enlightened about outdoor life, and learn more about Newfoundland and Labrador as a whole. Complete with photos, maps, and interesting facts from the journey, you will feel the heat of the campfire roasting your cheeks, the tug of a trout on your line, and the breath of a black bear on your neck. It's an experience for nature lovers everywhere."--

Download or read book Newfoundland and Labrador written by Sean Cadigan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-04-11 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador joining Canada, Sean T. Cadigan has written the book that will surely become the definitive history of one of North America's most distinct and beautiful regions. The site of the first European settlement by Vikings one thousand years ago, a former colony of England, and known at various times as Terra Nova and Newfoundland until its official name change to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001, this easternmost point of the continent has had a fascinating history in part because of its long-held position as the gateway between North America and Europe. Examining the region from prehistoric times to the present, Newfoundland and Labrador is not only a comprehensive history of the province, but an illuminating portrait of the Atlantic world and European colonisation of the Americas. Cadigan comprehensively details everything from the first European settlements, the displacement and extinction of the indigenous Beothuk by European settlers, the conflicts between settlers and imperial governance, to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's near annihilation at the Battle of the Somme, the rise of Newfoundland nationalism, Joey Smallwood's case for confederation, and the modernization and economic disappointments instigated by joining Canada. Paying particular attention to the ways in which Newfoundland and Labrador's history has been shaped by its environment, this study considers how natural resources such as the Grand Banks, the disappearance of cod, and off-shore oil have affected the region and its inhabitants. Richly detailed, compelling, and written in an engaging and accessible style, Newfoundland and Labrador brings the rich and vibrant history of this remarkably interesting region to life.
