Clueless as to where they are or where they are going, their trunks have been axed. Bereft, they must accept the reality that they will die. Extreme opposites in their beliefs, values, and goals, there could never be a more mismatched pair. Arizona-born Frazier grumbles and grouses with every breath! Yet Denver-sophisticate Sugar defies despair with insistence that their dreams may yet be realized an insistence which both provokes and comforts Frazier. She insists that goodness can reach beyond their bleak circumstances to exceed their greatest hopes. Comparing conversations overheard as they were taken from their tree farms, they become convinced they are bound for Hawaii. Thoughts of being in Hawaii provide a much needed distraction as they journey across the Pacific Ocean. This story stretches the imagination to look beyond the obvious and consider what Good may be cloaked in even the darkest despair! What does Christmas have to do with any of this? Therein lies the mystery.

In 1922 Honolulu, unhappy in the adoptive family that’s raised her, Dolores begins to search for that spirit early on—and she begins by running away at sixteen to live with her newlywed friend Maria. Trying to find her own love, Dolores marries a young Portuguese man named Manolo His large family embraces her, but when his drinking leads to physical abuse, only his relative Alberto comes to her rescue—and sparks a passion within Dolores that she hasn’t known before. Staunch Catholics can’t divorce, however; so, after the Pearl Harbor attack, Dolores flees with her two daughters to California, only to be followed by both Manolo and Alberto. In California, Manolo’s drinking problems continue—and Alberto’s begin. Outraged that yet another man in her life is turning to the bottle for answers, Dolores starts to doubt her feelings for Alberto. Is he only going to disappoint her, as Manolo has? Or is Alberto the embodiment of the aloha spirit she’s been seeking?

Download or read book Aloha Compadre written by Rudy P. Guevarra and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aloha Compadre: Latinxs in Hawaiʻi is the first book to examine the collective history and contemporary experiences of the Latinx population of Hawaiʻi. This study reveals that contrary to popular discourse, Latinx migration to Hawaiʻi is not a recent event. In the national memory of the United States, for example, the Latinx population of Hawaiʻi is often portrayed as recent arrivals and not as long-term historical communities with a presence that precedes the formation of statehood itself. Historically speaking, Latinxs have been voyaging to the Hawaiian Islands for over one hundred and ninety years. From the early 1830s to the present, they continue to help shape Hawaiʻi’s history, yet their contributions are often overlooked. Latinxs have been a part of the cultural landscape of Hawaiʻi prior to annexation, territorial status, and statehood in 1959. Aloha Compadre also explores the expanding boundaries of Latinx migration beyond the western hemisphere and into Oceania.

In this contemporary, creative, and truly original picture book, find the various countries Santa visits while on vacation, where Santa learns how to say hello in their native language. Tyler discovers Santa visits Japan and learns how to say hello in Japanese: Konnichi wa, along with visiting Hawaii and learning how to say hello in Hawaiian: Aloha. Part of what makes this book so engaging and humorous is that Santa tries to camouflage himself among everyday people by doing normal activities in that country he visits. Santa realizes that it is not that easy for the man with the white beard to go unnoticed. Children will love the clever way in which the story teaches them of different countries while teaching them to say hello in the places Santa visits.
