Book excerpt: Charles Reiffel (1862-1942) is widely regarded today as one of the foremost figures of the California plein air school of landscape painting. This catalogue, accompanying an exhibition of the same name at The San Diego Museum of Art and San Diego History Center, aims to reevaluate Reiffel as a leading practitioner of Post-Impressionism in the United States. Reiffel trained as a lithographer and traveled, worked, and studied in Europe before establishing himself as an independent artist in Silvermine, Connecticut. He finally settled in San Diego in 1925. THere, he immersed himself for the remainder of his life in the landscape of Southern California, its coast and rolling hills, discovering in its unique contours new motifs for his striking mix of Post-Impressionist and Expressionist brushwork. During his lifetime, Reiffel's work was widely exhibited throughout the country. He won national awards and the accolades of innumerable critics, who pointed out the relationship between his work and that of European Post-Impressionist. Indeed, Reiffel was often referred to as the "American van Gogh." While the San Diego region came to be the inspiration for the last important phase of his art, he did not enjoy the same financial success there that he had back East. His work was often dismissed by collectors as "too modern" in comparison with the more restrained production of the local plein air school. Even so, in the decades following his death, Reiffel's work was largely eclipsed by subsequent developments in American art. Charles Reiffel: An American Post-Impressionist proposes a fresh assessment of the artist, firmly reestablishing his place as a national figure in the canon of American painting and shedding light on a splendid page in the history of American Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. -- from dust jacket.

Book excerpt: Artists/Hawaii celebrates the fiftieth state's visual arts through the featured works and personal profiles of twenty-two of Hawaii's most respected contemporary artists. Artists from Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii are profiled in this lavishly illustrated volume. From an original list of 160 artists working in a variety of media, the twenty-two chosen through peer selection describe in their own words their life, work, and reflections on the role of art in society. Each artist was interviewed by the editors and responded to a series of questions about their background, their style and medium, and how Hawaii has influenced their creative endeavors. These personal and revealing sketches are followed by four signature pieces of each artist's work. University of Hawaii art professors Tom Klobe and Duane Preble visited with each artist prior to selecting the works featured in this book. Two pieces were identified as "career best" and two as outstanding recent works. Artists/Hawaii presents a captivating visual statement of the remarkable individual style of these twenty-two artists.

Book excerpt: Reflections: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa brings together an extraordinary collection of work from the British Museum for the first time. The contemporary art of the Middle East and North Africa is rich and vibrant. Whether living in their countries of birth or in diaspora, the featured artists are part of the globalised world of art. Here we see artists responding to and making work about their present, histories, traditions and cultures, reflecting on a part of the world that has experienced extraordinary change in living memory. The British Museum has been acquiring the work of Middle Eastern and North African artists since the 1980s, and the collection - principally works on paper - is one of the most extensive in the public sphere. Collected within the context of a museum of history, the works offer insights into the nature of civil societies, the complex politics of the region, and cultural traditions in their broadest sense, from the relationship with Islamic art, to the deep engagement with literature. The introduction to the book by curator Venetia Porter explores the history of the collection and the works included. The essential framework for understanding the politics and context within which the artists are working is provided by Charles Tripp's essay. The works are grouped into seven chapters, each beginning with a short introduction. The authors explore the selection within themes such as faith, abstraction and the female gaze.
