In the two centuries preceding the Reformation in England, economic, political and spiritual conditions combined with constructive effect. Endemic plague prompted a demonstrative piety and, in a world enjoying rising disposable incomes, this linked with current teachings - especially the doctrine of Purgatory - to sustain a remarkable devotional generosity. Moreover, political conditions, and particularly war with France, persuaded the government to summonits subjects' assistance, including responses encouraged in England's many parishes. As a result, the wealthier classes invested in and worked for their neighbourhood churches with a degree of largesse - witnessed in parish buildings in many localities - hardly equalled since. Buildings apart, the scarcity of pre-Reformation parish records means, however, that the resonances of this response, and the manner in which parishioners organised their worship, are ordinarily lost to us. This book, using the remarkable survival of records for one parish - All Saints', Bristol, in the later fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries - scrutinises the investment that the faithful made. Ifnot necessarily typical, it is undeniably revealing, going further than any previous study to expose and explain parishioners' priorities, practices and achievements in the late Middle Ages. This led to the growth of new industries such as brass manufacture, glass production and sugar refining, producing items for export, and processing imported raw materials. Bristol also derived wealth from the slave trade between Africa and the New World. The city has a long history of antiquarian and archaeological investigation. This volume provides, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the historical development of Bristol, based on archaeological and architectural evidence. Part 1 describes the geological and topographical context of Bristol and discusses evidence for the environment prior to the foundation of the city. The history of archaeological work in Bristol is discussed in detail, as is the pictorial record and the cartographic evidence for the city. In Part 2, a series of period-based chapters considers the historical background and archaeological evidence for Bristol’s development from the prehistoric, Roman, and post-Roman eras through the establishment and growth of Bristol between about 950 and 1200 AD; the medieval city; early modern period; and the period from 1700 to 1900 AD, when Bristol was particularly important for its role in transatlantic trade. Book excerpt: This book offers a reasonable understanding of John’s revelation letter to the seven churches of Asia, a letter that is not like the rest of the Bible and is difficult to understand. John’s revelation letter describes a terrible spiritual war that was fought between God and Satan--a war that was caused by a simple statement Jesus made (Matthew 16:18) when he said he would build his church and nothing could stop it. But Satan knew in order to fulfill his own purpose, which was to control the world himself, he must kill the church or it would be the end of him. There is a parallel view of that spiritual war, however. It was also fought as a carnal war between the first-century church and the Roman Empire. John wrote about the spiritual forces of God as they battled against the evil spiritual forces of the devil and his angels. The carnal war that those spiritual forces caused, the war between the church and the Roman Empire, was described by Edward Gibbon (1737–1794) in his history of the decline and fall of Rome. Gibbon only wrote history, and he did not consider his writings to be a description of anything that was going on in God’s kingdom, but the writings of both John and Gibbon describe the extreme price first-century Christians had to pay to be faithful to God and to continue on establishing his church throughout the world. This book compares the things that John saw take place in the spiritual world--the cause--with something that was quite like it, but happened in this physical world between Rome and the church--the effect, which was described by Gibbon in his history.
