Book Pauper Voices Public Opinion and Workhouse Reform in Mid Victorian England

Download or read book Pauper Voices Public Opinion and Workhouse Reform in Mid Victorian England written by Peter Jones and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first attempt to identify and describe a workhouse reform ‘movement’ in mid- to late-nineteenth-century England, beyond the obvious candidates of the Workhouse Visiting Society and the voices of popular critics such as Charles Dickens and Florence Nightingale. It is a subject on which the existing workhouse literature is largely silent, and this book therefore fills a considerable gap in our understanding of contemporary attitudes towards institutional welfare. Although many scholars have touched on the more obvious strands of workhouse criticism noted above, few have gone beyond these to explore the possibility that a concerted ‘movement’ existed that sought to place pressure on those with responsibility for workhouse administration, and to influence the trajectory of workhouse policy.

Callista Sanford's father was well educated but ended up working in a steel foundry, before mysteriously taking his own life. Callista is left struggling to support herself and her ailing mother. Regular employment eludes her, and her pride will not let her accept charity. Instead she is reluctantly betrothed to the boorish rent collector, Oswin Slade, who seeks to advance himself by defrauding and then blackmailing his employer, the sinister Mrs Derry. But she is more than a match for him, as he finds out to his cost. Everything starts to change for Callista when she meets kindly Daniel and Abigail Roberts, who have known tragedy too. They offer her employment and a home and, under their tuition, she discovers an artistic flair she didn't know she had. But a happy ending is not certain because an unseen enemy lurks in the shadows, determined to see the demise of the pauper's child.

Book Dewey and Elvis

Download or read book Dewey and Elvis written by Louis Cantor and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2005-04-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1949, while Elvis Presley and Sun Records were still virtually unknown--and two full years before Alan Freed famously "discovered" rock 'n' roll--Dewey Phillips brought the budding new music to the Memphis airwaves by playing Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, and Muddy Waters on his nightly radio show Red, Hot and Blue. The mid-South's most popular white deejay, "Daddy-O-Dewey" soon became part of rock 'n' roll history for being the first major disc jockey to play Elvis Presley and, subsequently, to conduct the first live, on-air interview with the singer. Louis Cantor illuminates Phillips's role in turning a huge white audience on to previously forbidden race music. Phillips's zeal for rhythm and blues legitimized the sound and set the stage for both Elvis's subsequent success and the rock 'n' roll revolution of the 1950s. Using personal interviews, documentary sources, and oral history collections, Cantor presents a personal view of the disc jockey while restoring Phillips's place as an essential figure in rock 'n' roll history.

Book excerpt: This story begins and ends on the ninth floor of a prestigious corporate tower known as The Bank Centre, located on bankers' row of Brickell Avenue in Miami, Florida. On the second day of August in l982, a young executive at a big eight accounting firm sat musing on the ocean view that came as a bonus with his office decor. He had just driven to work from his comfortable, middle-class home in the suburbs, back to his white-collar world. He reflected for another moment in anticipation. It had been a month since he had entered the halls of Case, Walsh, Madison & Co., in this land of the all seeing Philistine. That alone was enough to give him a chill as he wondered whether anything or anyone had changed in his absence. His life path had been punctuated by a series of flashpoints, and in his mind he began to revisit those points in order to unravel his own destiny: How, he pondered, did he get here, from where? What was the Truth? In his reality, Truth is only a means to an end, and true tales often end before they ever begin, as he would see, by the end of this day. BRUCE MORRIS is a native of Florida, but lives in New Jersey with his wife and daughter. Pauper's Run is his first work of fiction. Though New Jersey is where he writes, Florida is the state that inspires him. He will always consider it his home and hold its people close to his heart.

  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book The Politics of Madness written by Joseph Melling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery and treatment of insanity remains one of the most debated and discussed issues in social history. Focusing on the second half of the nineteenth century, The Politics of Madness provides a new perspective on this important topic, based on research drawn from both local and national material. Within a social and cultural history of the English political and class order, it presents a fresh appraisal of the significance of the asylum in the decades following the creation of a national asylum system in 1845. Arguing that the new asylums provided a meeting place for different social interests and aspirations, the text asserts that this then marked a transition in provincial power relations from the landed interests to the new coalition of professional, commercial and populist groups, which gained control of the public asylums at the end of the period surveyed.
