The stories tell of love of Elsie, from youth to her aging life, drama of sibling rivalry with her children, and the tragedies of cancer and HIV in the family. She died at the age of one hundred and one. She said, “no more hats because a crown awaited her in heaven.”
Download or read book Wearing Culture written by Heather Orr and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wearing Culture connects scholars of divergent geographical areas and academic fields—from archaeologists and anthropologists to art historians—to show the significance of articles of regalia and of dressing and ornamenting people and objects among the Formative period cultures of ancient Mesoamerica and Central America. Documenting the elaborate practices of costume, adornment, and body modification in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Oaxaca, the Soconusco region of southern Mesoamerica, the Gulf Coast Olmec region (Olman), and the Maya lowlands, this book demonstrates that adornment was used as a tool for communicating status, social relationships, power, gender, sexuality, behavior, and political, ritual, and religious identities. Despite considerable formal and technological variation in clothing and ornamentation, the early indigenous cultures of these regions shared numerous practices, attitudes, and aesthetic interests. Contributors address technological development, manufacturing materials and methods, nonfabric ornamentation, symbolic dimensions, representational strategies, and clothing as evidence of interregional sociopolitical exchange. Focusing on an important period of cultural and artistic development through the lens of costuming and adornment, Wearing Culture will be of interest to scholars of pre-Hispanic and pre-Columbian studies.
Download or read book Islamicate Textiles written by Faegheh Shirazi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textiles and clothing are interwoven with Islamic culture. In Islamicate Textiles, readers are taken on a journey from Central Asia to Tanzania to uncover the central roles that textiles play within Muslim-majority communities. This thematically arranged book sheds light on the traditions, rituals and religious practices of these regions, and the ways in which each one incorporates materials and clothing. Drawing on examples including Iranian lion carpets and Arabic keffiyeh, Faegheh Shirazi frames these textiles and totemic items as important cultural signifiers that, together, form a dynamic and fascinating material culture. Like a developing language, this culture expands, bends and develops to suit the needs of new generations and groups across the world. The political significance of Islamicate textiles is also explored: Faegheh Shirazi's writing reveals the fraught relationship between the East – with its sought-after materials and much-valued textiles – and the European countries that purchased and repurposed these goods, and lays bare the historical and contemporary connections between textiles, colonialism, immigration and economics. Dr Shirazi also discusses gender and how textiles and clothing are intimately linked with sexuality and gender identity.
Download or read book In Search of Rhett Butler written by Sharron Haynes and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What typical Southern girl who grew up in the decades of the 40's and 50's hadn't wanted to be Scarlett O'Hara - especially if she happened to be the namesake of that character? Born on the very day and at the precise time Gone With the Wind premiered in Atlanta, Scarlett Harwood's destiny had simply collided with the stars, or so went the thinking of her dreamy-eyed, melodramatic young mother whose address was Cloud Nine. It was on her fifteenth birthday that Scarlett Harwood finally saw the movie from which her name had come. From the moment Vivien Leigh's character materialized on the screen until the credits rolled, the girl was mesmerized, dumbstruck by the twinship she saw between herself and that young belle. It felt to her like someone had crawled inside her head, excised her brain, and planted it in the head of Scarlett O'Hara. She left the theatre that day still dabbing her tears, convinced that she was the reincarnation of the heroine - with one exception. She was smarter. She would never repeat O'Hara's mistakes. Never. Neither would she repeat those of her mother, Tessa. She would get it right. Unlike both Scarlett O'Hara and Tessa, once she found her perfect man, she would never let him go. That was the plan. Then came Jacob Stevenson.

Download or read book The Congo Affair written by Norman Shakespeare and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating nail-biting and romantic exodus from civil war in the heart of the equatorial jungle. It takes compelling reasons to leave rewarding jobs and comfortable urban lifestyles, and move to an isolated aero-space project in an equatorial jungle. The facility, constructed during a brief lull in the country's tumultuous history, is located on the equator; a good place to launch large rockets. Nearly three thousand westerners live and work behind a fence separating them from the jungle and the darkness. Few take an interest in the primeval ecosystem outside. As happens frequently in the Congo, things start to go downhill. Civil-war spreads and the base, fifteen-hundred miles up the river, is slowly cut-off. Regular re-supply flights are suspended after a near miss with a surface-to-air missile fired from the bush. The alternate route; ten days by dilapidated ferry to Kinshasa, becomes less reliable by the week. Head-office personnel in Europe are out of touch with things on the ground, and reluctant to 'upset' local politicians by suggesting curtailing operations prematurely. The situation reaches a point where the inhabitants are forced to prepare for the worst, and to seriously consider their desperate evacuation plans. While the mighty river flows endlessly by, camp security guards assume power from the academic admin staff, and 'martial law' is imposed. James Kent, a very private divorcee with I.T. and military experience engages the help of friendly natives to gather intelligence and questions the head-guard's escape plan. The community starts to polarize. Some make it to the coast by ferry but the situation deteriorates further, with repeated attacks by rebels causing more tensions. The stage is set; darkest Africa, suspense and passionate romance take control.

Download or read book Oxford Anthology of the Brazilian Short Story written by K. David Jackson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Anthology of the Brazilian Short Story contains a selection of short stories by the best-known authors in Brazilian literature from the late nineteenth century to the present. With few exceptions, these stories have appeared in English translation, although widely separated in time and often published in obscure journals. Here they are united in a coherent edition representing Brazil's modern, vibrant literature and culture. J.M. Machado de Assis, who first perfected the genre, wrote at least sixty stories considered to be masterpieces of world literature. Ten of his stories are included here, and are accompanied by strong and diverse representations of the contemporary story in Brazil, featuring nine stories by Clarice Lispector and seven by João Guimarães Rosa. The remaining 34 authors include Mário de Andrade, Graciliano Ramos, Osman Lins, Dalton Trevisan, and other major names whose stories in translation exhibit profound artistry. The anthology is divided into four major periods, "Tropical Belle-Époque," "Modernism," "Modernism at Mid-Century," and "Contemporary Views." There is a general introduction to Brazilian literary culture and introductions to each of the four sections, with descriptions of the authors and a general bibliography on Brazil and Brazilian literature in English. It includes stories of innovation (Mário de Andrade), psychological suspense (Graciliano Ramos), satire and perversion (Dalton Trevisan), altered realities and perceptions (Murilo Rubião), repression and sexuality (Hilda Hilst, Autran Dourado), myth (Nélida Piñón), urban life (Lygia Fagundes Telles, Rubem Fonescal), the oral tale (Jorge Amado, Rachel de Queiroz) and other overarching themes and issues of Brazilian culture. The anthology concludes with a haunting story set in the opera theater in Manaus by one of Brazil's most recently successful writers, Milton Hatoum.
