Book The Peach and Nectarine Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Peach and Nectarine Classic Reprint written by David Taylor Fish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peach and Nectarine Such early flowering and beautiful trees were not likely to escape the notice of ancient writers. Hence we find the almond-tree named by Moses, and its precocity in flowering seemed to be accepted as a sign of the future devotion of the tribe of Levi for the priesthood. Virgil also accepts the free flowering of the almond as at once proof and omen of a fruitful season. The merry month of May must have been more genial in his day than in these degenerate times, when May makes a ravenous cold snap or collation of myriads of peach and almond blossoms. All before the merry month is cheerful, fair, and beautiful - all behind a blighted, blackened wilderness of barrenness and sterility. Still, it must be said for Virgil that he wrote of standard almond trees, which did not rush so early as our peaches and nectarines forced back against hot roasted with the fiery heats of spring sunshine, and frozen through immediately afterwards with the cold darts of May night frosts, without a veil of cloud to tone down the energy of intense radiation. However, it is hardly fair to merry May to credit her with all our fruit failures, and with blighting the beauty of our standard or dwarf almond and peach trees, for these flower through February and March in warm localities, and also in April. It is this earliness and profusion of blooming that have endeared these plants to man in all ages, and some types and forms of peaches and almonds have probably been cultivated by him for his pleasure and use since the dawn of civilisation. It is, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Almond Varieties in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Almond Varieties in the United States Classic Reprint written by Milo N. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Almond Varieties in the United States In the descriptions more detail has been found necessary than is the case with other fruits. For identification purposes, a study of the nut proved most useful, though if one will attempt to classify plums by the pits, for example, he will appreciate the difficulties olved in classifying almonds by the' nuts alone. Therefore all parts of the tree have been studied, and-such detail has been given as seemed necessary in view of the large number Of varieties and the close resemblance among them. In the descriptions only such characteristics are considered as remain reasonably constant under normal conditions. Under abnormal conditions, as in time of severe drought or excessive irrigation, allowance must be made for varia tions in some characteristics, such as size of leaves, twig growth, and size of nut. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Between the Gates This gypsy of a book has few facts and not a word of fiction; not so much as a dry fagot of statistics or a wing feather of a fancy. How do you like California? Was the daily question, and to the uniform reply came the quick rejoinder: Ah, but you should see it in the winter, for the summer is in the winter. The writer sympathizes with any reader who misses what he seeks in this small volume, and can only soften the winter of our discontent by saying: Ah, but you should know what pain it was to drown what had to be omitted! Perhaps we two may meet again in the groves of Los Angeles, when the oranges are in the gold and the almond blossoms shine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eternal Fires: A Novel HE sat in a corner of the school-room alone, near the fire which had burned down into a great hollow cavern, a cave of golden red light from which a warm glow fell softly on the rug and over her seated fig ure. Her hands were folded idly in her lap; her eyes, wide open and full Of light them selves, rested on the glowing coals. She was a very pretty girl and in all the first soft bloom Of life. Her hair, dark gold, lay in thick masses on her head on either side Of the parting, from which it was simply drawn into a single double plait that rested on her neck; her eyes were dark blue, dark as the midnight sky at midsummer; her skin delicate, wonderful, like the almond blossom in Spring. She sat there motionless, think ing. That day had been an important one in her life. It was her seventeenth birthday. Book The Plants of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Plants of the Bible Classic Reprint written by John Hutton Balfour Ma and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plants of the Bible In Ecclesiastes xii. 5, it is said, The almond tree shall flourish. This has often been supposed to refer to the resemblance between the flowers of the almond and the hoary locks of old age. But this interpretation is not borne out by an examination of the blossom of the almond, which is pinkish, and not pure White. The passage rather appears to refer to the hastening of old age. AS the almond-tree ushers in spring, so do the signs referred to in the context indicate the coming of old age and death. In both passages the tree is taken as denoting the speedy approach of marked epochs or events. The almond-tree was associated in the minds of the children of Israel with the choosing of the house of Levi for the service of the tabernacle. Moses, we are told in Numbers xvii, laid up the twelve rods of the princes of Israel before the Lord, in the tabernacle of witness; and on the morrow the rod of Aaron, which represented the house of Levi, brought forth buds and blossoms, and yielded almonds. Thus the Lord made to cease the murmurings of the children of Israel against Moses. This rod was deposited, as a memorial, in the ark of the covenant (heb. Ix. In Northern Europe almonds are mentioned about the middle of the second century before Christ. They were produced largely in the islands of the Greek Archipelago. The Knights Templars in Cyprus levied tithes of almonds in 1411. In medieval cookery the consumption of almonds was very great.
