Download or read book Alluvial Fan Flooding written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-07 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluvial fans are gently sloping, fan-shaped landforms common at the base of mountain ranges in arid and semiarid regions such as the American West. Floods on alluvial fans, although characterized by relatively shallow depths, strike with little if any warning, can travel at extremely high velocities, and can carry a tremendous amount of sediment and debris. Such flooding presents unique problems to federal and state planners in terms of quantifying flood hazards, predicting the magnitude at which those hazards can be expected at a particular location, and devising reliable mitigation strategies. Alluvial Fan Flooding attempts to improve our capability to determine whether areas are subject to alluvial fan flooding and provides a practical perspective on how to make such a determination. The book presents criteria for determining whether an area is subject to flooding and provides examples of applying the definition and criteria to real situations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, and elsewhere. The volume also contains recommendations for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is primarily responsible for floodplain mapping, and for state and local decisionmakers involved in flood hazard reduction.

Book Review of the U S Army Corps of Engineers Involvement with Alluvial Fan Flooding Problems

Download or read book Review of the U S Army Corps of Engineers Involvement with Alluvial Fan Flooding Problems written by Robert C. MacArthur and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical paper presents a general overview of the Corps of Engineers' past involvements, present practices, and the future roles in dealing with alluvial fan flooding problems. The Corps' approach to alluvial fan flooding studies and the analytical methods they use to assess potential flood hazards are summarized. Selected case studies are presented. Six important issues that need to be considered as part of an effective alluvial fan management approach are presented. An extensive list of references is also included. (fr).

Book Geology and Geomorphology of Alluvial and Fluvial Fans

Download or read book Geology and Geomorphology of Alluvial and Fluvial Fans written by D. Ventra and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluvial and fluvial fans are the most widespread depositional landform bordering the margins of highland regions and actively subsiding continental basins, across a broad spectrum of tectonic and climatic settings. They are significant to the local morphodynamics of mountain regions and also to the evolution of sediment-routing systems, affecting the propagation and preservation of stratigraphic signals of environmental change over vast areas. The volume presents case studies discussing the geology and geomorphology of alluvial and fluvial fans from both active systems and ancient ones preserved in the stratigraphic record. It brings together case studies from a range of continents, climatic and tectonic settings, some introducing innovative monitoring and analysis techniques, and it provides an overview of current debates in the field. This volume will be of particular interest to geologists, geomorphologists, sedimentologists and the general reader with an interest in Earth science.

Book WinXSPRO

Download or read book WinXSPRO written by Thomas B. Hardy and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WinXSPRO is an interactive Windows software package designed to analyze stream channel cross section data for geometric, hydraulic, and sediment transport parameters. WinXSPRO was specifically developed for use in high-gradient streams (gradient > 0.01) and supports four alternative resistance equations for computing boundary roughness and resistance to flow. Cross section input data may be from standard cross section surveys using a rod and level or sag-tape procedures. WinXSPRO allows the user to subdivide the channel cross section into multiple sub-sections and has the ability to vary watersurface slopes with discharge to reflect natural conditions. Analysis options include developing stage-discharge relationships, evaluating changes in channel cross-sectional area, and computing sediment transport rates. Resource specialists can use the estimated stream-channel geometry cross section hydraulic characteristics and sediment transport output to assist with channel design and monitoring, instream flow analysis, the restoration of riparian areas, and the placement of instream structures.
