Book Models and Simulations of Tracer Dispersal by Mid ocean Mesoscale Eddies

Download or read book Models and Simulations of Tracer Dispersal by Mid ocean Mesoscale Eddies written by Dale B. Haidvogel and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haidvogel and Keffer (1984) have examined the stirring and mixing of a passive tracer in a turbulent mesoscale eddy field for environmental parameters characteristic of a homogeneous mid-ocean region. This study utilized two numerical models, based respectively on the barotropic vorticity and advective-diffusive equations, to simulate the evolving mid-ocean eddy field and the associated dispersion of an embedded tracer spot. Here, these models are described in detail, and the full suite of tracer release simulations are shown in the form of contour plots.

Book Production of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in Natural Waters

Download or read book Production of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in Natural Waters written by National Research Council Canada and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up-to-date information, knowledge and research in progress in scientific fields related to natural production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and some other ecologically similar fluvial salmonids is contained in the 25 papers and 12 abstracts contained in this publication, which were prepared for an international symposium held in St. John's, Newfoundland. Studies relate to stream ecology, invertebrates and predators, habitat improvement, competitive effects, behaviour and dispersal, habitat and production of juvenile salmon, population dynamics and relationships of juvenile salmon estimates to smolt yields. A list of participants at the conference is also provided.

Book The Riverine Ecosystem Synthesis

Download or read book The Riverine Ecosystem Synthesis written by James H. Thorp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most comprehensive model yet for describing the structure and functioning of running freshwater ecosystems. Riverine Ecosystems Synthesis (RES) is a result of combining several theories published in recent decades, dealing with aquatic and terrestrial systems. New analyses are fused with a variety of new perspectives on how river network ecosystems are structured and function, and how they change along longitudinal, lateral, and temporal dimensions. Among these novel perspectives is a dramatically new view of the role of hydrogeomorphic forces in forming functional process zones from headwaters to the mouths of great rivers. Designed as a useful tool for aquatic scientists worldwide whether they work on small streams or great rivers and in forested or semi-arid regions, this book will provide a means for scientists to understand the fundamental and applied aspects of rivers in general and includes a practical guide and protocols for analyzing individual rivers. Specific examples of rivers in at least four continents (Africa, Australia, Europe and North America) serve to illustrate the power and utility of the RES concept. - Develops the classic, seminal article in River Research and Applications, "A Model of Biocomplexity in River Networks Across Space and Time" which introduced the RES concept for the first time - A guide to the practical analysis of individual rivers, extending its use from pristine ecosystems to modern, human-modified rivers - An essential aid both to the study fundamental and applied aspects of rivers, such as rehabilitation, management, monitoring, assessment, and flow manipulation of networks

Book The Matamek Research Program

Download or read book The Matamek Research Program written by Robert J. Naiman and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report briefly describes activities associated with the Matamek Research Program in 1980. Research was conducted on biological, chemical, and physical characteristics of streams and rivers, principally in the Maisie and Matamek River watersheds, and on salmonid ecology and the natural history of sea trout. Canadian universities, the Quebec government, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution cooperated in this program.

Book Otolith Microstructure Examination and Analysis

Download or read book Otolith Microstructure Examination and Analysis written by David K. Stevenson and published by McClain Printing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of otolith microstructure research has experienced phenomenal growth since the early 1970s and now forms the basis for hundreds of studies in early life history, age, growth, recruitment, migration, mortality and stock structure. This book represents the first effort to compile and summarize the many techniques and procedures associated with studies of otolith microstructure. The complete sequence of events, from sample collection to data analysis, is covered comprehensively, so as to be applicable to most species and situations. The various chapters include both published and unpublished procedures.

Book Tropical Stream Ecology

Download or read book Tropical Stream Ecology written by David Dudgeon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Stream Ecology describes the main features of tropical streams and their ecology. It covers the major physico-chemical features, important processes such as primary production and organic-matter transformation, as well as the main groups of consumers: invertebrates, fishes and other vertebrates. Information on concepts and paradigms developed in north-temperate latitudes and how they do not match the reality of ecosystems further south is expertly addressed. The pressing matter of conservation of tropical streams and their biodiversity is included in almost every chapter, with a final chapter providing a synthesis on conservation issues. For the first time, Tropical Stream Ecology places an important emphasis on viewing research carried out in contributions from international literature. - First synthetic account of the ecology of all types of tropical streams - Covers all of the major tropical regions - Detailed consideration of possible fundamental differences between tropical and temperate stream ecosystems - Threats faced by tropical stream ecosystems and possible conservation actions - Descriptions and synstheses life-histories and breeding patterns of major aquatic consumers (fishes, invertebrates)
