Book excerpt: Allison Smith uses American history and traditional crafts as a starting point from which to imagine and create new narratives for the twenty-first century. "The Muster" documents an open-air public event staged by the Public Art Fund on May 14, 2005, during which Smith appointed herself Mustering Officer and asked the public, "What are you fighting for?" More than 70 volunteers answered her call to arms, creating a temporary "militia" in which each enlistee designed his or her own uniform and created a campsite expressing his or her stated cause, from the political to the whimsical, addressing art history, technology, craft, gender politics, gay rights, democracy and sociology, just to name a few. "The Muster" is designed with an eye toward utilitarian government-issue printed materials, just as the exhibition brochures and announcements were modeled on Civil War-era broadsheets, circus posters and soldier's diaries. Smith was born in Manassas, Virginia, in 1972. She is represented in New York by Bellwether Gallery.

Book The Financial Crisis and the Free Market Cure Why Pure Capitalism is the World Economy s Only Hope

Download or read book The Financial Crisis and the Free Market Cure Why Pure Capitalism is the World Economy s Only Hope written by John A. Allison and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller “Required reading. . . . Shows how our economic crisis was a failure, not of the free market, but of government.” —Charles Koch, Chairman and CEO, Koch Industries, Inc. Did Wall Street cause the mess we are in? Should Washington place stronger regulations on the entire financial industry? Can we lower unemployment rates by controlling the free market? The answer is NO. Not only is free market capitalism good for the economy, says industry expert John Allison, it is our only hope for recovery. As the nation’s longest-serving CEO of a top-25 financial institution, Allison has had a unique inside view of the events leading up to the financial crisis. He has seen the direct effect of government incentives on the real estate market. He has seen how government regulations only make matters worse. And now, in this controversial wake-up call of a book, he has given us a solution. The national bestselling The Financial Crisis and the Free Market Cure reveals: Why regulation is bad for the market—and for the world What we can do to promote a healthy free market How we can help end unemployment in America The truth about TARP and the bailouts How Washington can help Wall Street build a better future for everyone With shrewd insight, alarming insider details, and practical advice for today’s leaders, this electrifying analysis is nothing less than a call to arms for a nation on the brink. You’ll learn how government incentives helped blow up the real estate bubble to unsustainable proportions, how financial tools such as derivatives have been wrongly blamed for the crash, and how Congress fails to understand it should not try to control the market—and then completely mismanages it when it tries. In the end, you’ll understand why it’s so important to put “free” back in free market. It’s time for America to accept the truth: the government can’t fix the economy because the government wrecked the economy. This book gives us the tools, the inspiration—and the cure.

Book Generation Mixed Goes to School

Download or read book Generation Mixed Goes to School written by Ralina L. Joseph and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in the life experiences of children, youth, teachers, and caregivers, this book investigates how implicit bias affects multiracial kids in unforeseen ways. Drawing on critical mixed-race theory and developmental psychology, the authors employ radical listening to examine both how these children experience school and what schools can do to create more welcoming learning environments. They examine how the silencing of mixed-race experiences often creates a barrier to engaging in nuanced conversations about race and identity in the classroom, and how teachers are finding powerful ways to forge meaningful connections with their mixed-race students. This is a book written from the inside, integrating not only theory and research but also the authors’ own experiences negotiating race and racism for and with their mixed-race children. It is a timely and essential read not only because of our nation’s changing demographics, but also because of our racially hostile political climate. Book Features: Examination of the most contemporary issues that impact mixed-race children and youth, including the racialized violence with which our country is now reckoning.Guided exercises with relevant, action-oriented information for educators, parents, and caregivers in every chapter.Engaging storytelling that brings the school worlds of mixed-race children and youth to life.Interdisciplinary scholarship from social and developmental psychology, critical mixed-race studies, and education. Expansion of the typical Black/White binary to include mixed-race children from Asian American, Latinx, and Native American backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanley Marcus was known the world over as an innovative marketer and retailer with a refined sense of taste and style whose leadership transformed his family's Dallas clothing store, Neiman Marcus, into a globally recognized arbiter of fashion. However, his refined sensibility was also expressed in a very private passion for photography, shared only with family and close friends. Marcus's daughter Jerrie Marcus Smith and his granddaughter Allison V. Smith celebrate this passion in Reflection of a Man, a representative selection of the thousands of photographs Marcus shot on business trips in Europe, on vacations in Mexico, and during family celebrations. These photographs underscore what we already know about the man in terms of an eye for elegance, a preoccupation with merchandising, and an enthusiasm for the enjoyment of life, but they also reveal a talent for capturing the purity of a moment and memorializing instances of beauty. In addition to the photographs, Oscar de la Renta, the couture fashion designer, relates his experience with the master of the art of the sale; Jack Lenor Larsen, the dean of modern fabric design, pays tribute to his long friendship with Marcus; and Roy Flukinger, Senior Research Curator of Photography at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, critiques Marcus's photographs.

Book Multiple Barriers

  • Author : Alison Smith
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2022-06-29
  • ISBN : 1487542445
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Multiple Barriers written by Alison Smith and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite decades of efforts to combat homelessness, many people continue to experience it in Canada’s major cities. There are a number of barriers that prevent effective responses to homelessness, including a lack of agreement on the fundamental question: what is homelessness? In Multiple Barriers, Alison Smith explores the forces that shape intergovernmental and multilevel governance dynamics to help better understand why, despite the best efforts of community and advocacy groups, homelessness remains as persistent as ever. Drawing on nearly 100 interviews with key actors in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, as well as extensive participant observation, Smith argues that institutional differences across cities interact with ideas regarding homelessness to contribute to very different models of governance. Multiple Barriers shows that the genuine involvement of locally based service providers, with the development of policy, are necessary for an effective, equitable, and enduring solution to the homelessness crisis in Canada.

Book Remixing the Civil War

  • Author : Thomas J. Brown
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2011-11-15
  • ISBN : 1421403781
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Remixing the Civil War written by Thomas J. Brown and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961, the historian and poet Robert Penn Warren remarked that “the Civil War is, for the American imagination, the great single event of our history.” This volume reconsiders whether, fifty years later, Warren’s claim still holds true. Essays from specialists in art, literature, and history examine how contemporary culture represents and interprets the Civil War. They look at the works of more than thirty artists and writers as well as multiple movements—political and social—to reveal the many and provocative ways in which Americans engage the Civil War today. The book includes chapters on the place of Abraham Lincoln in Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, controversies over the symbolism of the Confederate flag, and the proliferation of "Juneteenth" observances. Remixing the Civil War pays special attention to the works of African Americans and white southerners, for whom the Civil War was a revolutionary and defining moment. Such prominent scholars as Robert H. Brinkmeyer Jr., W. Fitzhugh Brundage, Kirk Savage, and Elizabeth Young explore the works of major artists and lesser-known figures, including Bobbie Ann Mason, Kara Walker, Dario Robleto, and John Huddleston. The authors find that Americans today openly and playfully manipulate familiar images of the Civil War to explore the malleability and permeability of traditional social categories like national identity, gender, and race. This collection continues the conversation Warren began fifty years ago, although taking it in unorthodox and challenging directions, to offer fresh and stimulating perspectives on the war’s presence in the collective imagination of the nation.
