Book The Speaker Identification Ability of Blind and Sighted Listeners

Download or read book The Speaker Identification Ability of Blind and Sighted Listeners written by Almut Braun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almut Braun carried out forensic phonetic speaker identification experiments (voice lineups) with 306 lay listeners. Blind listeners significantly outperformed sighted listeners when the speech recordings were presented in studio quality. For recordings in mobile phone quality or of whispering voices, blind and sighted listeners achieved similar results. The data can be used as reference material for real cases with blind earwitnesses. Furthermore, it is discussed whether blind individuals are particularly suitable to work as forensic audio analysts for law enforcement agencies.

Book excerpt: Herman Hertzberger designs schools to function like cities. Schools and cities, he contends, can be read in many ways and are challenging, inspirational and inviting. School is where you can withdraw and adopt a position with respect to others, where you learn to take a place in society. Besides a presentation of Hertzberger's 30-plus built schools and a number of unbuilt ones, the sociologist Abram de Swaan addresses Hertzberger's work in an essay, discussing how school architecture impacts the social development of children. De Swaan pays tribute to Hertzberger as a pre-eminently 'sociological' architect.

Book Relationality and the Concept of God

Download or read book Relationality and the Concept of God written by Henry Jansen and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1995 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical theism, the dominant tradition in Christian theology, has stressed the metaphysical concept of God, i.e., God's ontological transcendence and independence from the world. In this century, however, this concept of God has increasingly met with criticism. On the basis of the Bible and new philosophical considerations, it is argued that a relational concept of God better answers the fundamental concerns of the Christian faith. In this book the author investigates the questions of whether one can conceive of God apart from the metaphysical attributes and whether reflection on the biblical depiction of God leads necessarily to a relational concept of God. The author explores the questions by examining the relational concepts of God found in two contemporary German theologians, Jurgen Moltmann and Wolfhart Pannenberg, and uses the divine attribute of immutability as a focus for the discussion. He argues that the relational concept of God presupposes another metaphysical conception of God, which raises problems as serious as those in classical theism, and that the Bible itself, because of its nature as a narrative text, is ambiguous in many respects as far as God is concerned. A truly Christian doctrine of God must take both the metaphysical and relational aspects of God into account."

Part two documents four projects. In the third part key figures and clients from the world of spatial planning are drawn on their opinions, dreams, ambitions, experiences and resolutions as these relate to the issues raised in the four schemes.

Book Living Together Apart

Download or read book Living Together Apart written by Miranda Henrica Maria Vervoort and published by Netherlands Institute for Social Research. This book was released on 2011 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with the rise in ethnic residential concentration, attention for the potential negative consequences of ethnic concentration in the neighbourhood for ethnic minorities' integration has also increased in recent years. And although many neighbourhood interventions have been implemented, there is still a lack of scientific knowledge concerning the effects of ethnic residential concentration on ethnic minorities' integration. This dissertation seeks to expand current scientific knowledge and to contribute to the public debate by studying the effects of ethnic residential concentration on ethnic minorities' social contacts and language practices. The main results indicate that ethnic residential concentration is related to less social contact with natives, but more social contact with co-ethnics. Through these social contacts, ethnic residential concentration hinders ethnic minorities' majority language proficiency and use. Moreover, ethnic residential concentration is found to constrain the strength of ethnic minorities' social ties with natives and the rise in ethnic concentration partly explains the stagnation of ethnic minorities' social contacts with natives over time. Implications of these results are discussed.

Book Koelies planters en koloniale politiek

Download or read book Koelies planters en koloniale politiek written by J. Breman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Misunderstanding Cults written by Benjamin Zablocki and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misunderstanding Cults provides a uniquely balanced contribution to what has become a highly polarized area of study. Working towards a moderate "third path" in the heated debate over new religious movements or cults, this collection includes contributions from both scholars who have been characterized as "anticult" and those characterized as "cult-apologists." The study incorporates multiple viewpoints as well as a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, with the stated goal of depolarizing the discussion over alternative religious movements. A prominent section within the book focuses explicitly on the issue of scholarly objectivity and the danger of partisanship in the study of cults. The collection also includes contributions on the controversial and much misunderstood topic of brainwashing, as well as discussions of cult violence, children brought up in unconventional religious movements, and the conflicts between alternative religious movements and their critics. Unique in its breadth, this is the first study of new religious movements to address the main points of controversy within the field while attempting to find a middle ground between opposing camps of scholarship.
