Book A Daughter of Isis

Download or read book A Daughter of Isis written by Nawal El Saadawi and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Against the white sand, the contours of my father's body were well defined, emphasized its existence in a world where everything was liquid, where the blue of the sea melted into the blue of the sky with nothing between. This independent existence was to become the outer world, the world of my father, of land, country, religion, language, moral codes. It was to become the world around me. A world made of male bodies in which my female body lived.' Nawal El Saadawi has been pilloried, censored, imprisoned and exiled for her refusal to accept the oppressions imposed on women by gender and class. For her, writing and action have been inseperable and this is reflected in some of the most evocative and disturbing novels ever written about Arab women. Born in a small Egyptian village in 1931, she eluded the grasp of suitors before whom her family displayed her when she was still ten years old and went on to qualify as a medical doctor. In 1969, she published her first work of non-fiction, Women and Sex; in 1972, she was dismissed from her profession because of her political activism. From then on there was no respite: imprisonment under Sadat in 1981 was the culmination of the long struggle she had waged for Egyptian women's social and intellectual freedom; in 1992, her name appeared on a death list issued by a fundamentalist group after which she went into exile for five years. Since then, she has devoted her time to writing novels and essays and to her activities as a worldwide speaker on women’s issues. A Daughter of Isis is the autobiography of this extraordinary woman. In it she paints a sensuously textured portrait of the childhood that produced the freedom fighter. We see how she moulded her own creative power into a weapon - how, from an early age, the use of words became an act of rebellion against injustice.

Book Transdiagnostic Multiplex CBT for Muslim Cultural Groups

Download or read book Transdiagnostic Multiplex CBT for Muslim Cultural Groups written by Devon E. Hinton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an increasing number of Muslims living in the West, and studies suggesting that mental illness may be more prevalent and chronic amongst Muslim cultural groups, there is a pressing need for appropriate treatment options. This book provides mental health professionals with a practical guide to delivering culturally adapted therapy to Muslim immigrants, refugees, and those with a Muslim religious or cultural background. It takes into account the religious, spiritual, social and cultural dimensions of individuals, framing elements such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and sleep problems within well-known Islamic terms and concepts. The book covers issues such as prominent somatic symptoms, multiple comorbidities, low education, ongoing life difficulties and mental health stigma. As Multiplex Therapy is transdiagnostic, targeting anxiety and mood disorders, the treatment is applicable to a large proportion of patients. Each chapter guides the reader through therapy sessions, giving clinicians an invaluable everyday manual for delivering treatment.

  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2009-06-02
  • ISBN : 0743599683
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Traveller written by Michael Katakis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How could I have known then with no maps acquired and my bags not yet packed that my journey had already begun? ...The tools of a traveler are compass and map. They calculate distances covered and destinations sought but cannot measure the consequences of experiences on a human heart," writes Michael Katakis in his introduction. Traveller is a collection of letters and journal entries that bring the immediacy of experience together with perceptive reflections of the author's own past. The entries in this volume are not travel guides. They are more personal, like letters from the most desirable sort of friend. The friend carries the listener with him as he meanders through the medina in Fez or into the hills of Gallipoli. His voice is such that listeners can almost smell the herbs and dusty soil of Crete, and always they are introduced to the people he meets along the way. For anyone curious about the world, and introduced with a foreword written and read by Michael Palin, Traveller is sure to delight, infuriate and, perhaps most importantly, inspire thought about the complex world around them.
