Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As noted in the description of the first volume of this book, every punk book seems to be about the bands, about the 'faces', about the music. Volume 2 of All The Young Punks brings you more stories from the frontline, from the trenches. Stories from the foot soldiers who made punk what it was without turning it into a career. Born too late for the inner circle, but shining like a thousand comets nonetheless - this is the story of the punks. “It felt like pure energy - like a Sherbet Dip, when you have the first mouthful and your face scrunches up” “Punk Rock had saved me and I dedicated myself to it's glory” “there was music I could relate to for when I was feeling sad, happy, funky or whatever, but nothing for when I felt angry... until THIS.” “Then there was the day a bunch of us painted my mate's Woolworths acoustic guitar white then set light to it in the local park while another mate filmed it with his dad's Super 8 Camera as a 'Dada-ist Performance Piece'. Unfortunately we didn't tell the bloke who's guitar it was, and when he found out we had to go into hiding for a couple of weeks as he recruited a bunch of local 'hard nuts' to 'sort us out'....” “Records with swearing in!” “It was like a story with no pre-ordained ending. I still get a electrical twinge when a band hits that first note or chord, what will happen next.” “bum flaps fashioned from an old kilt of my mum's, black bondage trousers with the baby reins I had worn as a toddler attached behind, hastily marker penned anarchy armbands.” “I remember buying a white catering jacket (on which I pinned a Crass badge with the 'broken gun' image in day-glo orange on white) that I fancied looked a bit like the tuxedo that Sid wore in the My Way video. Margate being a seaside resort, though, I was always being asked if I'd got a job as an ice cream seller.” “Its naïve to think that society could change, but to a certain extent, in the early years and with the optimism of youth I believed it could happen.” “I still had long hair and was wearing a 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' teeshirt. The guitarist of Slaughter came up to me after the gig and said “Do you like Yes then?”, I very nervously mumbled “Er I suppose so”, to which he replied “Me too mate, fuckin' great band!” “It came along just at the right time though and gave me somewhere to belong, which was a lifesaver.” “I'm still in awe of the sex, style and subversion that the original Punk Explosion thrust upon unsuspecting England and if I'm not out smashing the system then I'm doing my bit to resist it's clammy clutches.” “He said, "This album can't be any good. It's got 14 tracks on it." I love that quote.”

Book Man Hunters of the Old West Volume 2

Download or read book Man Hunters of the Old West Volume 2 written by Robert K. DeArment and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the early twentieth century, life in the American West could be rough and sometimes vicious. Those who brought thieves and murderers to justice at times had to employ tactics as ruthless as their prey. In this follow-up to his first collection of biographies of the West’s most recognized man-hunters, noted western historian Robert K. DeArment recounts the remarkable careers of eight men—Pat Garrett, John Hughes, Harry Love, Harry Morse, Frank Norfleet, Bass Reeves, Granville Stuart, and Tom Tobin—who pursued notorious criminals. Volume 2 of Man-Hunters of the Old West shows that limited resources and dire conditions often made extralegal violence necessary for survival. Harry Love, the famous killer of California bandito Joaquin Murrieta, and Tom Tobin, who ended the murders of the Espinosa gang in Colorado, tracked their quarries to remote hideouts, shot them, and cut off their heads to prove they had been eliminated. Felon trackers, like the vigilante organizations that preceded them, on occasion administered summary justice—the on-the-spot hanging of their captured prey—especially if they believed the established court system was not working. Some of the man-hunters in DeArment’s accounts were freelance scouts and trackers; others were career officers of the law. At least one, Frank Norfleet, was a private citizen turned dedicated nemesis of con artists. Love, Stuart, and Morse began life as easterners who made their way West. All the others were midwesterners or far westerners. Some of these man-hunters wrote about their adventures, and were written about in turn. Garrett’s account of his hunt for Billy the Kid remains a best seller, for example, and both Reeves and Hughes have been credited for inspiring the Lone Ranger of TV and movie fame. DeArment discusses constant threats to the man-hunters’ survival, the federal government’s undependable presence, and extralegal violence as major themes in western law enforcement. In recounting these eight men’s adventures, this volume reveals the forces that made brutality seem commonplace.

Book Down Out The Magazine Volume 2 Issue 2

Download or read book Down Out The Magazine Volume 2 Issue 2 written by James O. Born and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a number of noteworthy articles in this issue of The Magazine. We are fortunate to feature some of the correspondence between two legends of crime fiction, Walter Satterthwait and Bill Crider, both of whom recently passed away. For those who knew Walter and Bill, or were just fans of their work, there is a touch of their personalities that comes through in these exchanges and, at least for a moment, gives us an opportunity to experience their unique voices just a little bit, just one more time. Jeff Vorzimmer, editor of last year’s The Best of Manhunt collection, tells us about Stephen Marlowe’s career in the piece leading into his story The Blonde at the Wheel. Jeff also contributed a story of his own and we’re happy to have this opportunity to showcase his many skills. We also have a couple of repeat appearances by writers who have appeared in previous issues. Arthur Klepchukov is back, as is John M. Floyd and John Shepphird. And with original stories by veterans like Josh Pachter and James O. Born, and newer offerings by Michael Cahlin, Steven Nester and Ken Luer, we’re showing the art of the crime fiction short story is still going strong. May it ever be so.

Book Too Much Too Young the 2 Tone Records Story Rude Boys Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation

Download or read book Too Much Too Young the 2 Tone Records Story Rude Boys Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation written by Daniel Rachel and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive and remarkable story of 2 Tone Records, featuring an introduction by Pauline Black —A Times/Sunday Times Book of the Year —An Uncut Book of the Year —Long-Listed for the Penderyn Music Book Prize —A Louder Than War Book of the Year —A Blitzed Magazine Book of the Year In 1979, 2 Tone Records exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain, the US, and beyond, as albums by the Specials, the Selecter, Madness, the English Beat, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues, racism, class, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against rightwing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae, crossed with a punk attitude, to create an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry, England, and masterminded by a middle-class art student, Jerry Dammers, who envisioned an English Motown. Dammers signed a slew of successful artists, and a number of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Over the following years, Dammers built the label back up again, entering a new phase full of fresh signings and a beautiful end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” Told in three parts, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief, bright burning moment shaped British, American, and world culture.
