Book Intimate Lessons in Holy Whispers

Download or read book Intimate Lessons in Holy Whispers written by Brittney Hamilton and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimacy is a lovely and necessary closeness that is often connected with special relationships between humans. The closeness and commitment set the relationship apart as particularly valuable above others. The best example is intimacy with the Lord. Intimacy with Him is just as obtainable absent the physical as intimacy with another human is with the presence of physical contact. Intimate Lessons in Holy Whispers is a collection of unique insights and perspectives that have been given by that "gentle whisper" from the Lord in private meditations and personal time with Him. Sprinkled with a series of poetry of constant yearnings for closeness, as well as discussions on biblical topics, each of the four chapters offer encouragement and inspiration for closeness with God and then with others. These chapters each have their own focuses""beneficial daily living, hope in challenging situations from someone who has made it through different challenging situations, and real testimonies of the Lord's involvement in my life. For the remaining chapter, a special focus of wisdom is given to developing a healthy preparation for marriage to the one who is seeking a spouse. May these messages from the Lord speak to those who could use gentle invitations to greater closeness in their relationship with God. May those who are desiring marriage, whether currently in a relationship or still single, consider the precious insights that are meant to help create that God-made fairy tale. And finally, may these be reminders and encouragement that striving for closeness in the Spirit is always beautiful to the Lord.

Book Abandoned Women and Poetic Tradition

Download or read book Abandoned Women and Poetic Tradition written by Lawrence Lipking and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-09-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of poetic tradition is a figure of abandonment, a woman forsaken and out of control. She appears in writings ancient and modern, in the East and the West, in high art and popular culture produced by women and by men. What accounts for her perennial fascination? What is her function—in poems and for writers? Lawrence Lipking suggests many possibilities. In this figure he finds a partial record of women's experience, an instrument for the expression of religious love and yearning, a voice for psychological fears, and, finally, a model for the poet. Abandoned women inspire new ways of reading poems and poetic tradition.

Book Hidden Criticism of the Angry Tyrant in Early Judaism and the Acts of the Apostles

Download or read book Hidden Criticism of the Angry Tyrant in Early Judaism and the Acts of the Apostles written by Drew J. Strait and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden Criticism of the Angry Tyrant in Early Judaism and the Acts of the Apostles adds to the current literature of imperial-critical New Testament readings with an examination of Luke’s hidden criticism of imperial Rome in the Acts of the Apostles and in Paul’s speech on the Areopagus in Acts 17. Focusing on discursive resistance in the Hellenistic world, Drew J. Strait examines the relationship between hidden criticism and persuasion and between subordinates and the powerful, and he explores the challenge to the dissident voice to communicate criticism while under surveillance. Strait argues that Luke confronts the idolatrous power and iconic spectacle of gods and kings with the Gospel of the Lord of all—a worldview that is incompatible with the religions of Rome, including emperor worship.

Book Between the Icon and the Idol

Download or read book Between the Icon and the Idol written by Artur Mrowczynski-Van Allen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The totalitarian state clearly intends to eliminate all those forms of organic community that rival the absolute loyalty of the individual to the state. This god is a jealous god. . . . Mrowczy?ski-Van Allen's diagnosis is therefore no less relevant after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And his proposed cure is no less salutary. He appeals to the work of Grossman and other voices from the East to oppose the idolatry of the deified self with the icon, which opens up a distance in which giving and forgiving can occur. Eastern voices are so helpful because they refuse to quarantine theological questions; the borders between theology, politics, and literature are fluid and porous, because they are all a part of an integrated life. The holism of totalitarianism must be opposed by another kind of holism that replaces the idol with the icon. At the same time, the aspiration of secularism to separate politics from theology, and power from love, must be opposed by a politics based on an opening of human persons to God and to each other, the kind of self-donation found in Grossman, and for Christians, on the Cross. --From the Foreword by William T. Cavanaugh

Book Mandelstam s Worlds

Download or read book Mandelstam s Worlds written by Andrew Kahn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rightly appreciated as a 'poet's poet', Mandelstam has been habitually read as a repository of learned allusion. Yet as Seamus Heaney observed, his work is 'as firmly rooted in both an historical and cultural context as real as Joyce's Ulysses or Eliot's Waste Land.' Great lyric poets offer a cross-section of their times, and Mandelstam's poems represent the worlds of politics, history, art, and ideas about intimacy and creativity. The interconnections between these domains and Mandelstam's writings are the subject of this book, showing how engaged the poet was with the history, social movements, political ideology, and aesthetics of his time. The importance of the book also lies in showing how literature, no less than history and philosophy, enables readers to confront the huge upheaval in outlook can demand of us; thinking with poetry is to think through the moral compromise and tension felt by individuals in public and private contexts, and to create out of art experience in itself. The book further innovates by integrating a new, comprehensive discussion of the Voronezh Notebooks, one of the supreme achievements of Russian poetry. This book considers the full political dimension of works that explore the role of the poet as a figure positioned within society but outside the state, caught between an ideal of creative independence and a devotion to the original, ameliorative ideals of the revolution.

Book Abandonment to Divine Providence

Download or read book Abandonment to Divine Providence written by Jean Pierre de Caussade and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to live in the present moment, accepting everyday obstacles with humility and love, has guided generations of seekers to spiritual peace and holiness. In this timeless spiritual classic, de Caussade presents the simple, profound gospel message that Jesus lived and taught: My meat is to do the will of my Father in heaven. The author states, The will of God gives to all things a supernatural and divine value for the soul submitting to it. The duties it imposes and those it contains become holy and perfect because everything it touches shares its divine character. This special volume of the famous spiritual treatise also includes the many insightful letters of Father de Caussade on the practice of self-abandonment. These numerous letters provide a great additional source of wisdom and much practical guidance for how to grow in abandonment and to deepen our union with God in our daily lives.De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people - from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God's will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from His hand. The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.
