Book At the Origin of the Christian Claim

Download or read book At the Origin of the Christian Claim written by Luigi Giussani and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1998-05-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giussani argues that if we accept the hypothesis that the mystery entered the realm of human existence and spoke in human terms, the relationship between the individual and God is no longer based on a moral, imaginative, or aesthetic human effort but instead on coming upon an event in one's life. Thus the religious method is overturned by Christ: in Christianity it is no longer the person who seeks to know the mystery but the mystery that makes himself known by entering history. At the Origin of the Christian Claim presents an intriguing argument supported with ample documentation from the gospels and other theological writings.

Book A Generative Thought

Download or read book A Generative Thought written by Elisa Buzzi and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luigi Giussani, born in 1922, is one of the most influential thinkers and leaders in the Catholic world today. He is the founder of the Catholic lay movement Communion and Liberation, now present in more than seventy countries worldwide, with a membership well in excess of 100,000. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people have come into contact with him through the charitable, cultural, and social works of his movement and through his writings. An Introduction to the Thought of Luigi Giussani presents Giussani's works to the English-speaking world through the multiple perspectives of thinkers with different backgrounds and intellectual motivations, showing the lively dialogue evoked by their encounter with his "generative thought" and inviting deeper engagement by readers. The various contributors make clear the relevance of Giussani's thought to the North American and Western cultural and religious context. They point to an important element in all of Giussani's work – his proposal that the Christian Event is the answer to the deepest and most pressing questions in today's world. With his clear and vigorous awareness of the cultural, philosophical, and theological issues central to the contemporary debate, Giussani succeeds in making the truth of the Catholic tradition both reasonable and relevant. Contributors include Lorenzo Albacete (Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico), Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires), Remi Brague (Université La Sorbonne, Paris), Carlo Caffarra (Archbishop of Ferrara-Comacchio), Ralph Del Colle (Marquette University), Ravan Farhâdi (United Nations), Giorgio Feliciani (Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Milan), Neil Gillman (Jewish Theological Seminary, NY), David J. Book excerpt: It is difficult to find a surgeon like Enzo Piccinini. He never gave up. He knew how to take risks when others held back. When patients turned to him, he took each person to heart and never abandoned them, even when there was nothing more he could do surgically. However, if there was even the slightest possibility of a solution, he would doggedly pursue it, striving to help each patient any way he could. Enzo Piccinini was an amazing surgeon but also a true friend to everyone he cared about. He was a wonderful father, not only to his four children, but also to the many people he led to embrace Christianity. He was one of the most resolute proponents of contemporary Catholicism-his actions have opened thousands of hearts to the truth and beauty of Christ. For him, every patient was an image of the suffering Christ; every person was sacred. He became a world-class surgeon because he felt that every person deserved the best medical care possible. In his practice and in his life, he embodied the ultimate form of "personalized medicine." Sadly, Enzo died in a car accident on May 26, 1999 in Fidenza, Italy. His funeral was attended by more than seven thousand people. After receiving news of Enzo's sudden death, Father Luigi Giussani, founder of the Movement of Communion and Liberation and Enzo's close friend, wrote, "What most impressed me is that his adherence to Christ was so all-consuming that there was never a day when he would not seek out the human glory of Christ in every possible way." Enzo was an exceptionally admirable and kind-spirited human being. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of all those who were a part of his vision for a better world. You, too, will feel touched by his story and will hopefully be inspired to lead a life of compassion, love, and generosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume by Angelo Scola, a longtime friend of Balthasar and a leading scholar of his work, provides the most penetrating introduction to the vast writings of the great Catholic theologian available anywhere. Scola beautifully captures Balthasar's "theological style" and offers a reading of Balthasar that passes through the most important phases of his writings: theological, philosophical, and artistic. Intended to serve as an examination of the "form" of Balthasar's philosophical and theological approach rather than as a detailed overview of his themes and theses, this study will be an invaluable aid to students and scholars seeking to understanding the complex body of Balthasar's work. FROM THE CRITICS "Balthasar's thought is complex, and Angelo Scola gives us a helpful guide." - New Oxford Review "An invaluable introduction to the theological style which permeates Balthasar's writings.... A "must" for the serious student of Balthasar, Scola's text represents an invaluable addition to college and university libraries." - Catholic Library World

Book The Life of Luigi Giussani

Download or read book The Life of Luigi Giussani written by Alberto Savorana and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 1444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsignor Luigi Giussani (1922–2005) was the founder of the Catholic lay movement Communion and Liberation in Italy, which has hundreds of thousands of adherents around the globe. In The Life of Luigi Giussani Alberto Savorana, who spent an important part of his life working and studying with Giussani, draws on many unpublished documents to recount who the priest was and how he lived. Giussani’s life story is particularly significant because it shares many of the same challenges, risks, and paths toward enlightenment that are described in his numerous and influential publications. Savorana demonstrates that the circumstances Giussani experienced and the people he encountered played a crucial role in defining his vocation. Illuminating details are shared about Giussani’s parents, professors, and friends in the seminary, the things he read, his priesthood, his experience teaching, misunderstandings and moments of recognition, and illness. Luigi Giussani considered Christianity to be a fact, a real event in human life, which takes the form of an encounter, inviting anyone and everyone to verify its relevance to life’s needs. This is what happened for so many people all over the world who recognized in this priest and leader, with his rough and captivating voice, not only a teacher to learn from, but above all a man to compare oneself with – a companion for the journey who could be trusted to answer the question: how can we live? In addition to providing the first chronological reconstruction of the life of the founder of Communion and Liberation, The Life of Luigi Giussani provides a detailed account of his legacy and what his life’s work meant to individual people and the Church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Communion and Liberation movement began in Milan, Italy, in the 1950s as an attempt to communicate the awareness that Christ is the one true response to the deepest needs of people at every moment of history. The person who encounters and welcomes the presence of Christ undergoes a conversion that affects not only the individual but also the surrounding environment.

Luigi Giussani shows that the nature of reason expresses itself in the ultimate need for truth, goodness, and beauty. These needs constitute the fabric of the religious sense, which is evident in every human being everywhere and in all times. So strong is this sense that it leads one to desire that the answer to life's mystery might reveal itself in some way.
