Download or read book The Italian Yearbook of International Law 1999 written by Benedetto Conforti and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where diversity and pluralism are indispensable values for the balanced progress of international law, knowledge of the contribution that each State makes to the formation and development of international norms is increasingly important for both scholars and practitioners. "The Italian Yearbook of International Law" aims at making accessible to the English-speaking public the Italian contribution to the practice and literature of international law. "The" "Yearbook" is organised into three main sections. The first contains doctrinal contributions featuring articles on the European human rights system and its relation to customary international law, on international control of bribery and mergers, and on the problem of accountability for gross violations of human rights. The second section covers the Italian practice in the areas of 1) judicial decisions (including the important decisions in the "Ocalan" and "Cermis" cases), 2) diplomatic and parliamentary practice, 3) treaty practice, and 4) national legislation. Relevant materials are presented by way of introductory notes and concise legal analysis. The third part of the volume contains a systematic bibliographical index of Italian literature in the field of international law. The volume ends with an analytical index for ready consultation.

Download or read book Waste and Environmental Policy written by Massimiliano Mazzanti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research deals with the increasingly complex issues of waste generation, waste management and waste disposal that in less developed industrialised countries present diverse but critical concerns. It takes a socio-economic and policy-oriented perspective and provides empirical evidence at EU and regional level. The EU and Italy are taken as relevant case studies given the disparities in environmental performances between less and more developed areas. The rich and various empirical evidence shows that a robust delinking between waste generation and economic growth is still not present, thus future policies should directly address the problem at the source by targeting waste generation in EU countries. Some structural factors like population density and urbanisation present themselves as relevant drivers of both waste management and landfill diversion. Nevertheless, economic and structural factors alone are not sufficient to improve waste performances. Though waste policies are to be redesigned by covering the entire area of waste management, some first signals of policy effectiveness are arising. This work will be of most interest to those students of environmental economics and environmental sciences, as well as policy makers, waste utility managers and companies in the waste management sector.
Download or read book Extending the Protection of Geographical Indications written by Michael Blakeney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The TRIPS Agreement (for trade-related intellectual property rights) provides for the general protection of geographical indications (GIs) of product origin, including for example the special protection of wines and spirits and for the creation of a multilateral register for wines. The African Group of countries has been in the forefront of countries agitating in the World Trade Organization TRIPS Council for the extension of this special protection and of the multilateral register to industries which are of interest to developing countries, primarily agriculture. The so-called "extension question" is the central feature of the Doha Development Agenda at both the WTO and World Intellectual Property Organization. This book provides some empirical evidence and applied legal and economic reasoning to this debate. It provides both a general review of the key issues and a series of case studies from six Anglophone and four Francophone countries in Africa. These focus on major agricultural commodities such as coffee, cotton, cocoa and tea, as well as more specific and local products such as Argan oil and Oku white honey.

Download or read book Adversarialism and Consensus written by Lisa C. Webley and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A penetrating study of the divergent messages that the Law Society of England and Wales versus the UK College of Family Mediators subtly transmit to their members about the professional approach to adopt in divorce and custody disputes. Lisa C. Webley uses a grounded theory method to analyse training, accreditation, best practice statements, and codes of conduct contrasting the two professions -- and their divergent self-identities. Do they promote healing and agreement among divorcing couples, and involvement of the children in decision-making, or adversarial litigation and paternalism? Are their styles traditionally feminine or masculine? From her dissertation Abstract: "The study examines the extent to which the training, accreditation and codes of conduct of family solicitors and family mediators privilege adversarial or consensus based approaches to divorce for their clients, in the light of statements made around the time of the passage of the Family Law Bill, which suggested a dichotomy in professional approach by these two professional groups. It considers further the nature of professional identity for each of the professional groupings, as constructed through the messages delivered by the professional bodies." Part of the Dissertation Series from Quid Pro Books.

Download or read book Complementarity in the Rome Statute and National Criminal Jurisdictions written by Jann K. Kleffner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in depth-examination of the principle of complementarity in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and the implications of that principle for the suppression of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes on the domestic level. The book is set against the general background of the suppression of these crimes on the domestic level, its potential and pitfalls. It traces the evolution of complementarity and provides a critical and comprehensive analysis of the provisions in the Rome Statute and the Rules of Procedure and Evidence relevant to complementarity. In so doing, it addresses both substantive and procedural aspects of admissibility, while taking account of the early practice of the ICC. Further attention is devoted to the question whether and to what extent the Rome Statute imposes on States Parties an obligation to investigate and prosecute core crimes domestically. Finally, the book examines the potential of the complementary regime to function as a catalyst for States to conduct domestic criminal proceedings vis-à-vis core crimes.
