Book Track in the Forest

Download or read book Track in the Forest written by Bob Burns and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1968 US men's track and field team featured such legends as Tommie Smith, Bob Beamon, Al Oerter, and Dick Fosbury and they won 12 gold medals and set six world records at the Mexico City Games, one of the most dominant performances in Olympic history. The Black Power protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the victory stand in Mexico City remains a most enduring images of the games. A 400-meter track carved out of the Eldorado National Forest above Lake Tahoe played a role in molding that juggernaut. To acclimate US athletes for the elevation of Mexico City, the training camp and final Olympic selection was held at Echo Summit near the California-Nevada border. On a track in which hundreds of trees were left on the infield to minimize environmental impact, four world records fell—more than have been set at any US meet since. But the Vietnam War was raging, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, and a group of athletes from San Jose State had been threatening to boycott the Mexico City Games to protest racial injustice. Informed by dozens of interviews and the deep knowledge of sports journalist and track enthusiast Bob Burns, this is the story of how in one of the most divisive years in American history, a California mountaintop provided an incomparable group of Americans shelter from the storm.

Book Chasing Grace

Download or read book Chasing Grace written by Sanya Richards-Ross and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For as long as I can remember, life has been measured in seconds. The fewer, the better.” Most people equate success with having more, but Sanya’s quest was always for less. She started running track as a little girl in Jamaica and began competing when she was only seven. At 31 she’s had a career’s worth of conditioning to run a 400-meter race in 50 seconds, hopefully 49, or even better, 48. When she started training with her coach, Clyde Hart, they divided her race into four phases: push, pace, position, poise, and with the inherent prayer. For years Sanya worked to hone every phase in practice so that when it came time to race, her body would respond as her mind instinctively transitioned from one phase to the next. As she got older and embraced a life that measures more than just a number on the time clock, she has realized the genius of this strategy for not just racing the 400 meters, but for living her best life. Sanya shares triumphant as well as heartbreaking stories as she reveals her journey to becoming a world-class runner. From her childhood in Jamaica to Athens, Beijing and London Olympics, readers will find themselves inspired by the unique insights she’s gained through her victories and losses, including her devastating injury during the 2016 Olympic Trials forcing career retirement just weeks before Rio. Sanya demonstrates how even this devastating loss brought her closer to the ultimate goal of becoming all God created her to be. ”Sometimes you think you are chasing a gold medal, but that’s not what you are chasing. You’re racing to become the best version of yourself.”

Book excerpt: This “stirring…emotionally raw” (Publishers Weekly) young adult debut novel about three teens entangled by secret love, open hatred, and the invisible societal constraints wrapped around people both Black and white is perfect for readers of All American Boys and The Hate U Give. There is an unspoken agreement between the racially divided towns of Bayside and Hamilton: no one steps over the train tracks that divide them. Or else. Not until Zach Whitman anyway, a white boy who moves in from Philly and who dreams of music. When he follows his dream across the tracks to meet his idol, the famous jazz musician who owns The Sunlight Record Shop in Hamilton, he’s flung into Capri Collins’s path. Capri has big plans: she wants to follow her late mother’s famous footsteps, dancing her way onto Broadway, and leaving this town for good, just like her older brother, Justin, is planning to do when he goes off to college next year. As sparks fly, Zach and Capri realize that they can help each other turn hope into a reality, even if it means crossing the tracks to do it. But one tragic night changes everything. When Justin’s friend, the star of Hamilton’s football team, is murdered by a white Bayside police officer, the long-standing feud between Bayside and Hamilton becomes an all-out war. And Capri, Justin, and Zach are right in the middle of it.

Book Tales from the Track

Download or read book Tales from the Track written by J. Steve Strosnider and published by Trafford on Demand Pub. This book was released on 2002 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stock car racing as we know it began in the late 1940's. Throughout the 1950's, the sport became popular across the United States. In the southern states, the 1950's saw a tremendous proliferation of small dirt tracks whose owners were hoping to ride the crest of stock car racing's building popularity. Along with the increasing number of tracks, a new breed of race driver emerged. These were primarily blue-collar men who had families to support and full-time jobs to fulfull, but whose lives often became consumed with building cars, racing and long hours of mechanical work in a never-ending search for more speed. With each passing year, more was learned about racing and the sport gradually became more sophisticated. The stories told in this book are direct from the memories of the drivers, owners, and family members of drivers who describe what it was like to be a part of the racing subculture of the era in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Hear it in their own words.
