Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida's size and shape meant a largely remote interior until shortly before the Civil War. The catalysts for blasting through that anonymity were three ambitious and very different visionaries who built railroads linking east to west and north to south: Henry Morrison Flagler, David Levy Yulee, and Henry Bradley Plant. Their iron horses transported people––rich tourists from New York, slaves from Africa sold in Havana––and goods from around the state and the globe: oysters, cattle, sugar cane, molasses, and phosphate. Versions of the main lines run today––hauling freight in and out of the state and carrying passengers to connecting lines nationwide. Yet Florida’s size and shape still get in the way of efficient auto trips and affordable inter-state air travel. A private company is today planning to build a high-speed passenger train from Miami to Orlando. This book is the complete history of railways in the state of Florida––telling the tale of its beginnings as well as its future.

Book excerpt: “This comprehensive guide will assist the traveler in planning an excursion and executing it with minimum effort and maximum pleasure.” —Library Journal All Aboard—first published in 1995, and here completely revised and updated—is much more than just a mile-by-mile scenery guide for train travelers. It will make any trip smoother and more enjoyable with its insightful travel trips and information about how railroads operate. With trains attracting new riders in record numbers, the time is perfect for a new edition of All Aboard. All Aboard is more than an ordinary travel guide. The author tells us how and why the first railroads came about, describes the building of America’s trans-continental railroad, and explains how individual trains are operated. He also offers advice that can only come from a veteran traveler: booking trips, finding the lowest fares, avoiding pitfalls, packing for an overnight trip, what to do on board, whom to tip and how much. This new, fourth edition includes a new chapter about eight major railway stations, and is updated throughout with new information and photographs. It discusses Amtrak’s new locomotives and Viewliner sleeping cars, changes in rules regarding pets and bicycles on American trains, and much more. Jim Loomis writes frequently about train travel for Sunday newspaper travel sections and has ridden every one of Amtrak’s long-distance trains multiple times, logging nearly 200,000 miles. He is a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Railroad Passengers.

Book excerpt: "In All Aboard, Jim Godbold takes the reader on a unique and fascinating journey: It's an excursion that starts in an era when money was scarce and the virtues of hard work and perseverance were necessities, not mere suggestions. In contrast to today's gotta-have-it-now, it's-never-enough world of materialism and instant gratification, Jim offers us an enlightening and frequently humorous glimpse of a time when one's daily bread was not a foregone conclusion. From his first job as an enterprising newspaper carrier to his incredible experiences in World War II combat in the Pacific to his entrepreneurial ventures in newspaper publishing and photography, he tells a compelling and inspiring story of resourcefulness, creativity and determination. Along the way he richly affirms the incalculable value of family and friends. Even though I have known and loved my friend Jim for many years, it was a thrill to read 'the story behind his story', discovering the events and people who helped to shape the man who realized his own American dream." --Robert J. Tamasy

Book Florida East Coast Railway

Download or read book Florida East Coast Railway written by Seth H. Bramson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Track the history of the Florida East Coast Railway from its beginning in 1885-present day. The benchmark for US railroad operations, the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway is often referred to by other American railroads as the best-maintained and -operated railroad in the country. The FEC Railway can trace its lineage back to December 31, 1885, the day Henry M. Flagler purchased the Jacksonville, St. Augustine & Halifax River Railway. The FEC was known for its famous passenger trains, and the last scheduled FEC Railway passenger train ran on July 31, 1968, due to the work stoppage by the nonoperating unions that began on January 22, 1963. Although without passenger trains since 1968, the FEC's partner, All Aboard Florida, with its Brightline trains, will soon establish a new standard for privately operated rail passenger service in America. Today, caboose-less, the FEC operates numerous high-speed freight trains between Jacksonville and Miami.

Book Florida East Coast Railway

Download or read book Florida East Coast Railway written by Seth H. Bramson and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2006 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida East Coast Railway has been the speedway to America's playground for more than 110 years. FEC offered some of America's finest rail passenger service until 1968 and remains the freight lifeline of Florida's east coast. The railroad arrived on the shores of Biscayne Bay on April 15, 1896, and it reached Key West in January 1912. That feat etched both Henry Flagler's and the railroad's names in Florida and U.S. railroad history. FEC's operation is so precise and punctual, its roadbed and motive power so well maintained, that it is the benchmark for every other railroad in the country.

Book Life After Death

Download or read book Life After Death written by Richard Brockman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intertwined tale of a boy’s world shattered by suicide and a man’s story rewritten by neuroscience. When Richard Brockman found his mother’s body, the simple narrative of his childhood ended. Life After Death tells the story of a boy who died and of a man who survived when the boy and the man are one and the same. It tells a very personal—yet tragically common—story of irredeemable loss. It tells the story of story itself. How story forms. How it grows. How it changes. How it can be broken. And finally, how sometimes it can be repaired. Now an expert in genetics, epigenetics, and the biology of attachment, Brockman chronicles his evolution from a child overwhelmed by trauma to a man who has struggled to reclaim his past. He lays bare the core of one who is both victim and healer. By weaving together childhood despair and clinical knowledge, Brockman shows how the shattered pieces of the self—though never the same and not without scars—can sometimes be put back together again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida's rivers comprise a tapestry of natural wonders. They support rich ecosystems. They define the landscape and lend character to the regions through which they pass. The first half of this book provides an overview of Florida's waterways, while the second half provides detailed information on 60 of Florida's rivers, covering each one from source to end. From the Blackwater River in the western Panhandle to the Ichetucknee and Kissimmee Rivers in central Florida to the Miami River in south Florida, it traces the flow of these streams as they weave through cypress swamps, pine-studded hills, and hardwood hammocks. It introduces plants and animals endemic to each. This book also takes the reader on a journey through time. It tracks the history of Florida's rivers, from the dawn of the Paleoindians through the Spanish conquest to the present. It traces human efforts to confine and harness these waters. Finally, it looks at conservation and examines efforts to preserve Florida's rivers and return them to their natural states.
