Popcorn from 5,600 years ago has been found in New Mexico, and thousand-year-old popcorn from Chile will even still pop! Many other grains can also be popped, including rice, wheat, and barley, but popcorn is the most popular. In fact, in the United States each American eats about fifty liters of it every year! And the snack’s special place in our hearts is nothing new. Popcorn, which is actually a special variety of maize, was held in high regard among early peoples of the Americas. Painted 1,700-year-old funeral containers found in Mexico, for example, were decorated with images of the god of maize wearing popcorn accessories. But how does this esteemed treat work? The kernel’s thick shell is the reason that popcorn pops. As the popcorn is heated, moisture trapped inside turns to steam and presses outward on the hull. When the pressure inside is about nine times the pressure of the air, the hull bursts, and the starch inside expands. Some of this work is for wages, some is on their family’s own small plots and some is forced and/or harmful. This book examines children’s involvement in such work. It argues that framing all children’s engagement in economic activity as ‘child labour’, with all the associated negative connotations, is problematic. This is particularly the case in Africa where many rural children must work to survive and where, the contributors argue, much of the work undertaken is not harmful. The conceptual and case-based chapters reframe the debate about children’s work and harm in rural Africa with the aim of shifting research, public discourse and policy so that they better serve the interest of rural children and their families.

The author demonstrates that technologies of visualisation have always been part of the operation of the principle of distinction, arguing that the military uniform sustained the legal categories of civilian and combatant and actively set the boundaries of permissible and prohibited targeting, and so legal and illegal killing. Drawing upon insights from the theory of legal materiality, visual studies, critical fashion studies, and a dozen of military manuals he shows that far from being passive objects of regulation, these technologies help to draw the boundaries of the legitimate target.
