Book excerpt: Getting abducted by aliens is not the worst thing to ever happen to Millie Rogers. The lowest point in her life comes after the rescue when she’s forced to deal with him—Nadir, the alien man tasked with ensuring the abducted humans get home to New Terra. He’s made his contempt of humans blatantly obvious—so why does he keep dogging her? The caped, horned, furry alien is the most supercilious, fascinating, obnoxious, handsome, condescending, rugged jerk she’s ever met. She can’t wait to see the last of his muscular backside! As the Advisor Most Loyal to His Majesty the King of Araset, Nadir faces some difficult assignments, but none so challenging as shepherding the human female, Millie Rogers, back to New Terra. The smart-mouthed spitfire with the lush body seems to go out of her way to bedevil—and beguile—him. Despite her rudeness, he can’t seem to stay away from her. Luckily, she’ll soon be home where she belongs—and away from temptation. Just as it seems they’ll get their wish to never see each other again, Millie’s repatriation is put on hold. The king’s son goes missing, and Nadir leaves in search of him. What he doesn’t count on is Millie accidentally stowing away on the shuttle pod and the craft crashing in a war zone. Forced to trust one another, they set aside their differences to battle insurgents and unexpected threats in a dash for safety. But as desire flares, will their forbidden bond prove to be the biggest danger of all? Alien Undone is a snarky, sassy enemies-to-lovers alien abduction romance in the Forbidden Bonds sci-fi romance series. It can be read as a stand-alone. Millie and Nadir were secondary characters in Alien With Benefits and Alien Incognito.

Although their romance is brief—duty demands he attend an important interplanetary summit—the love bond that forms is deep. Heartbroken when he leaves, Kat knows she’ll never forget the gentle alien man and hopes one day they’ll meet again. Prince Lomax remembers reluctantly bidding goodbye to the lovely human woman, Kat Whalen, before shuttling off to a League of Planets summit meeting. The next thing he knows, he’s in a detention facility, arrested on charges of conspiracy and insurrection. He has no memory of anything in between, but the theory is that he was brainwashed into joining the Galactic Justice Warriors, a group of violent anarchists plotting to overthrow the League of Planets. In disgrace and despair, he’s sent home to Araset to await deprogramming and adjudication of the charges. His only support comes from Kat, who refuses to leave his side, convinced he is still the kindhearted, gentle man who captured her heart. Although the prince seems normal, he is still under the influence of the mind control, which makes him a danger to everyone around him. It is only a matter of time before something triggers him, and he snaps. Can he be deprogrammed before he involuntarily hurts the woman he loves? Or will their bond be the one thing that saves her?

Book excerpt: Hell hath no fury like a woman abducted by aliens…twice. The space cruise is supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime. Instead, Jessie Sayles gets abducted by aliens. After the rescue, she’s determined to sound the alarm that humans have been targeted by a galactic slave cartel. But upon returning home, she discovers her apartment has been burglarized, her cat is freaked out, her boss doubts everything she says, and she gets kidnapped again by a horned, amber-eyed alien who claims he’s with the galactic government. She doesn’t know what to believe, but she’s sure of one thing—she won’t allow anyone to interfere with her crusade to warn her fellow New Terrans of the threat, no matter how persuasive—or sexy—he is. Maxx, an agent with the League of Planets, has three years invested in a mission to crush the slave cartel, and he’s about to close in on the mastermind behind it all—until Jessie barrels into middle of his operation. He has to stop her before she unwittingly ruins everything, so he takes her into protective custody. With Jessie in lockdown, the sparks that fly ignite a heated desire, followed by a grudging, mutual respect as they come to realize they’re on the same side. But just as Maxx is about to capture the cartel mastermind, unresolved trust issues threaten to destroy everything he and Jessie are fighting for. And they soon discover the stakes are greater than either of them imagined.

Book excerpt: He betrayed her once, but he’s her only hope. Being saved from a slave ship and given life-saving medical attention by a tall, muscular furry alien with large curling horns is enough for Giselle Cartier to think she’s found a hero. Having him deliver her back into the clutches of the same traffickers shatters her trust and the belief that anything she’d felt was real. But just as she’s rescued by the League of Planets and is about to be repatriated to New Terra, Joule reappears with the devastating news that Giselle’s sister has been taken. What’s even more shocking is his promise to find her. He’s already betrayed her once; what’s to stop him from doing it again? How can she trust anything he says? Regardless of the risks, she has to go with him. He’s her only hope for finding and saving her sister. This time, she won’t let her guard down. She also won’t make the mistake of falling in love with him again. Long ago, Joule hardened his heart to the cruelty, misery, and death he’d witnessed in the alien species trafficking trade. As an agent with the League of Planets working deep undercover to combat the trafficking of sentient beings in the galaxy, he can’t afford empathy. To benefit the greater good, he’s often forced to make difficult, even reprehensible decisions. But something about the vulnerable, critically ill Giselle Cartier pierces through the protective wall surrounding his heart. Choosing to save her life is startlingly easy—too easy. He should have known better than to let himself get attached. Because circumstances force his hand, leaving him no choice but to take her back to the slavers. He couldn’t risk blowing his cover for a single human woman—even if he had fallen in love with her. Now he’s involved all over again. When he learns Giselle’s sister has also been abducted, he can’t hold back from offering his assistance. Unable to reveal his real role, he must continue to let her believe he’s a trafficker—one who’s already betrayed her. Giselle will never trust him again…which is smart. Because she still can’t.

When the ship’s AI goes haywire and accidentally releases the prisoners from their cells, she makes a break for it—only to be kidnapped again by a huge horned and furry alien. Aeon claims to be a prince, but he acts like a royal jerk and refuses to let Holly go. However, she’s determined to locate her friend and somehow get home to New Terra. Prince Aeon of Araset is enjoying his last breath of freedom from royal duties when he’s accidentally ensnared by slavers trafficking in alien species, including the protected but despised humans. At the first opportunity, he escapes in a tiny evac pod and lands on the nearest inhabited planet. In an impulsive act of sympathy, he takes a human female with him to save her from a fate worse than death. Now he’s stuck with the talkative, conspicuous nuisance. For her own safety, he can’t release her. At odds, at first, Holly and Aeon quickly discover that on a hostile, dangerous planet, being friends and working together offers more benefits than fighting. But when friendship turns passionate, emotions remain guarded because both know they are loving on borrowed time. Upon their rescue, Holly must return to New Terra. A human would never be accepted on Araset, and Aeon must bond with a royal of his species to inherit the throne. Can two lovers from different worlds defeat the forces against them and find happiness together?

Her new husband isn’t the alien she expected, but a human—a cold, rude, rather scary man. But she finds solace in the fact that she’ll be safe at Haven Ranch on planet Refuge. Mutual dislike puts their marriage on a rocky footing, but, as they’re forced to cooperate with one another to adapt to a new life on a strange planet, friendship and mutual respect begin to grow, and amity soon blooms into attraction, passion, and love. Book Alien Constructions

Download or read book Alien Constructions written by Patricia Melzer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An incisive critical work” that looks at Octavia Butler’s writing, the movies of the Matrix and Alien series—and more—through a feminist lens (Femspec). Feminist thinkers and writers are increasingly recognizing science fiction’s potential to shatter patriarchal and heterosexual norms, while the creators of science fiction are bringing new depth and complexity to the genre by engaging with feminist thewories and politics. This book maps the intersection of feminism and science fiction through close readings of science fiction literature by Octavia E. Butler, Richard Calder, and Melissa Scott and the movies The Matrix and the Alien series. Patricia Melzer analyzes how these authors and films represent debates and concepts in three areas of feminist thought: identity and difference, feminist critiques of science and technology, and the relationship among gender identity, body, and desire, including the new gender politics of queer desires, transgender, and intersexed bodies and identities. She demonstrates that key political elements shape these debates, including global capitalism and exploitative class relations within a growing international system; the impact of computer, industrial, and medical technologies on women’s lives and reproductive rights; and posthuman embodiment as expressed through biotechnologies, the body/machine interface, and the commodification of desire. Melzer’s investigation makes it clear that feminist writings and readings of science fiction are part of a feminist critique of existing power relations—and that the alien constructions (cyborgs, clones, androids, aliens, and hybrids) that populate postmodern science fiction are as potentially empowering as they are threatening.

Download or read book Alien Universe written by Don Lincoln and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are alien civilizations really possible? If extraterrestrials exist, where are they? How likely is it that somewhere in the universe an Earth-like planet supports an advanced culture? Why do so many people claim to have encountered Aliens? In this gripping exploration, scientist Don Lincoln exposes and explains the truths about the belief in and the search for life on other planets. In the first half of Alien Universe, Lincoln looks to Western civilization's collective image of Aliens, showing how our perceptions of extraterrestrials have evolved over time. The roots of this belief can be traced as far back as our earliest recognition of other planets in the universe—the idea of them supporting life was a natural progression of thinking that has fascinated us ever since. Our captivation with Aliens has, however, led to mixed results. The world was fooled in the nineteenth century during the Great Moon Hoax of 1835, and many people misunderstood Orson Welles's 1938 radio broadcast, The War of the Worlds, leading to significant anxiety among some listeners. Our continuing interest in Aliens is reflected in entertainment successes such as E.T., The X-Files, and Star Trek. The second half of the book explores the scientific possibility of whether advanced Alien civilizations do exist. For many years, researchers have sought to answer Enrico Fermi’s great paradox—if there are so many planets in the universe and there is a high probability that many of those can support life, then why have we not actually encountered any Aliens? Lincoln describes how modern science teaches us what is possible and what is not in our search for extraterrestrial civilizations. Whether you are drawn to the psychological belief in Aliens, the history of our interest in life on other planets, or the scientific possibility of Alien existence, Alien Universe is sure to hold you spellbound.

Book Alien Legacies

Download or read book Alien Legacies written by Nathan Abrams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1979 film Alien has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Directed by Ridley Scott, at the time known primarily for making advertisements, and starring then-unknown actor Sigourney Weaver in the lead role, it transcended its humble origins to shock and disturb audiences upon its initial release. Its success has led to three direct sequels, two prequels, one "mashup" franchise, a series of comic books, graphic novels, novelizations, games, and an enormous and devoted fanbase. For forty years, Alien and its progeny have animated debate and discussion among critics and academics from a wide variety of fields and methodological perspectives. This book brings together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to explore Alien through a contemporary lens. The chapters here demonstrate the extent to which its effects and reception are deeply multifaceted, with the Alien franchise straddling the lines between "high" and "low" culture, playing with generic categories, crossing media boundaries, and animating theoretical, critical, and political debates. Chapters touch on female agency and motherhood, the influence of H.R. Giger, the viscerality of Alien's body horror, the narrative tradition of the Female Gothic, the patriarchal gaze in the Alien video games, and the rise of in-universe online marketing campaigns. In so doing, the volume aims to debate Alien's legacy, consider its current position within visual culture, and establish what the series means--and why it still matters--forty years since its birth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of NASA's Golden Record that offers new perspectives and theories on how music can be analyzed, listened to, and thought about—by aliens and humans alike. In 1977 NASA shot a mixtape into outer space. The Golden Record aboard the Voyager spacecrafts contained world music and sounds of Earth to represent humanity to any extraterrestrial civilizations. To date, the Golden Record is the only human-made object to have left the solar system. Alien Listening asks the big questions that the Golden Record raises: Can music live up to its reputation as the universal language in communications with the unknown? How do we fit all of human culture into a time capsule that will barrel through space for tens of thousands of years? And last but not least: Do aliens have ears? The stakes could hardly be greater. Around the extreme scenario of the Golden Record, Chua and Rehding develop a thought-provoking, philosophically heterodox, and often humorous Intergalactic Music Theory of Everything, a string theory of communication, an object-oriented ontology of sound, and a Penelopean model woven together from strands of music and media theory. The significance of this exomusicology, like that of the Golden Record, ultimately takes us back to Earth and its denizens. By confronting the vast temporal and spatial distances the Golden Record traverses, the authors take listeners out of their comfort zone and offer new perspectives in which music can be analyzed, listened to, and thought about—by aliens and humans alike.

Book Temporary Alien Workers In The United States

Download or read book Temporary Alien Workers In The United States written by Sidney Weintraub and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most controversial and significant aspect of U.S. immigration policy concerns those persons who enter the country illegally in order to seek employment. It is known that a significant proportion of the "temporary" immigrants remain--authorities estimate that between three and six million undocumented aliens live permanently in the U.S., a figure that grows by the hundreds of thousands each year--but other aspects of the issue are less clear. There is no consensus about how the importation of foreign workers affects the U.S. labor market, nor about the desirability of some system to identify temporary workers living legally in the U.S. Neither is there agreement about the effect of curtailing the flow of workers from Mexico on that country's internal political structure. This book brings together current knowledge about temporary workers in the U.S. and examines the various issues that are likely to shape future policy. The authors place particular emphasis on recent proposals made by the Reagan administration and on other recommendations now under consideration by Congress. The book is not political in the sense of being for or against any particular program; rather, it seeks to clarify the many issues by setting forth what is known and by critically analyzing the options.
