Book Alice s Adventures in Wonderland Decoded

Download or read book Alice s Adventures in Wonderland Decoded written by David Day and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gorgeous 150th anniversary edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is also a revelatory work of scholarship. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland--published 150 years ago in 1865--is a book many of us love and feel we know well. But it turns out we have only scratched the surface. Scholar David Day has spent many years down the rabbit hole of this children's classic and has emerged with a revelatory new view of its contents. What we have here, he brilliantly and persuasively argues, is a complete classical education in coded form--Carroll's gift to his "wonder child" Alice Liddell. In two continuous commentaries, woven around the complete text of the novel for ease of cross-reference on every page, David Day reveals the many layers of teaching, concealed by manipulation of language, that are carried so lightly in the beguiling form of a fairy tale. These layers relate directly to Carroll's interest in philosophy, history, mathematics, classics, poetry, spiritualism and even to his love of music--both sacred and profane. His novel is a memory palace, given to Alice as the great gift of an education. It was delivered in coded form because in that age, it was a gift no girl would be permitted to receive in any other way. Day also shows how a large number of the characters in the book are based on real Victorians. Wonderland, he shows, is a veritable "Who's Who" of Oxford at the height of its power and influence in the Victorian Age. There is so much to be found behind the imaginary characters and creatures that inhabit the pages of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. David Day's warm, witty and brilliantly insightful guide--beautifully designed and stunningly illustrated throughout in full colour--will make you marvel at the book as never before.

This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice is sitting with her sister outdoors when she spies a White Rabbit with a pocket watch. Fascinated by the sight, she follows the rabbit down the hole. She falls for a long time, and finds herself in a long hallway full of doors. There is also a key on the table, which unlocks a tiny door; through this door, she spies a beautiful garden. She longs to get there, but the door is too small. Soon, she finds a drink with a note that asks her to drink it. There is later a cake with a note that tells her to eat; Alice uses both, but she cannot seem to get a handle on things, and is always either too large to get through the door or too small to reach the key. While she is tiny, she slips and falls into a pool of water. She realizes that this little sea is made of tears she cried while a giant. She swims to shore with a number of animals, most notably a sensitive mouse, but manages to offend everyone by talking about her cat's ability to catch birds and mice. Left alone, she goes on through the wood and runs into the White Rabbit. He mistakes her for his maid and sends her to fetch some things from his house. While in the White Rabbit's home, she drinks another potion and becomes too huge to get out through the door. She eventually finds a little cake which, when eaten, makes her small again.

Book Elucidating Alice

Download or read book Elucidating Alice written by Lewis Carroll and published by . This book was released on 2015-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textual commentary looks at "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" quite simply, as a children's novel, investigating the book's narrative structure, analysing how Carroll successfully constructed a pioneering book for children that was to stand the test of time, remaining remarkably relevant to the present day. There are many depths and subtleties in this book that can only be properly appreciated by examining the text line by line. The writing is supremely skilful, and will stand the closest scrutiny-even virtually to every line of the narrative. Most books would crumble under such close analysis. It is testimony to the strength, depth, and quality of "Alice" that the book comes through such intense examination and survives triumphantly. ---- Selwyn Goodacre has a large Lewis Carroll collection including over 2000 copies of the "Alice" books. He is a past chairman of the Lewis Carroll Society, and edited the Society journal from 1974-1997. For years he has pursued a special interest in the text of the "Alice" books, which has led to his current commentary on, and analysis of, the way they were written."

His Annotated Alice, first published in 1959, has over half a million copies in print around the world and is beloved by both families and scholars—for it was Gardner who first decoded many of the mathematical riddles and wordplay that lay ingeniously embedded in Carroll's two classic stories, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Forty years after this groundbreaking publication, Norton is proud to publish the Definitive Edition of The Annotated Alice, a work that combines the notes of Gardner's 1959 edition with his 1990 volume, More Annotated Alice, as well as additional discoveries drawn from Gardner's encyclopedic knowledge of the texts. Illustrated with John Tenniel's classic, beloved art—along with many recently discovered Tenniel pencil sketches—The Annotated Alice will be Gardner's most beautiful and enduring tribute to Carroll's masterpieces yet.

Book Alice s Adventures in Wonderland

Download or read book Alice s Adventures in Wonderland written by Amanda Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'One hundred and fifty years after its publication, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland remains a doozy and a delight for children and adults. The book stands out for many reasons, but is particularly exceptional as an innovative work of nonsense. It is also noteworthy for its lack of moralism and sentimentalism that was so en vogue during the Victorian era. But does the absence of an obvious moral mean the story has no meaning? And what is the draw to Wonderland, that dreamy realm of easily outraged creatures where madness is the ruling authority? What about that druggie caterpillar?'-From Amanda Ryan's Guide The Worldview Guides from the Canon Classics Literature Series provide an aesthetic and thematic Christian perspective on the most definitive and daunting works of Western Literature. Each Worldview Guide presents the big picture (both the good and the bad) without neglecting the details. Each Worldview Guide is a friendly literary coach -- and a treasure map, and a compass, and a key -- to help teachers, parents, and students appreciate, critique, and begin to master the classics. The bite-size WGs are divided into these ten sections (with some variation due to genre): Introduction, The World Around, About the Author, What Other Notables Said, Setting, Characters, & Plot Summary, Worldview Analysis, Quotables, 21 Significant Questions & Answers, and Further Discussion & Review. Book Poetics of Children s Literature

Download or read book Poetics of Children s Literature written by Zohar Shavit and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in the seventeenth century as a distinctive cultural system, children's literature has had a culturally inferior status resulting from its existence in a netherworld between the literary system and the educational system. In addition to its official readership—children—it has to be approved of by adults. Writers for children, explains Zohar Shavit, are constrained to respond to these multiple systems of often mutually contradictory demands. Most writers do not try to bypass these constraints, but accept them as a framework for their work. In the most extreme cases an author may ignore one segment of the readership. If the adult reader is ignored, the writer risks rejection, as is the case of popular literature. If the writer utilizes the child as a pseudo addressee in order to appeal to an adult audience, the result can be what Shavit terms an ambivalent work. Shavit analyzes the conventions and the moral aims that have structured children's literature, from the fairy tales collected and reworked by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm—in particular, “Little Red Riding Hood”—through the complex manipulations of Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, to the subversion of the genre's canonical requirements in the chapbooks of the eighteenth century, and in the formulaic Nancy Drew books of the twentieth century. Throughout her study Shavit, explores not only how society has shaped children's literature, but also how society has been reflected in the literary works it produces for its children.

Book Group Analysis and Psychodynamic Group Therapy with Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Group Analysis and Psychodynamic Group Therapy with Children and Adolescents written by Katrin Stumptner and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are born into a social context that is not of their choosing. From early childhood, this context is made up of diverse group experiences that play a crucial role in shaping a person's social life and desire to learn. This makes the group context an ideal setting for therapeutic and educational work, especially with children and adolescents. This volume offers numerous practical suggestions for using the group as a helpful and supportive medium, e.g., in parent-infant/toddler groups, parent/caregiver groups, groups with children or adolescents, and in preventive group work in schools. The contributions provide insights into the diversity and complexity of conceptual, group analytic work with children's, youth and parents' groups, and show how this work can be successful in outpatient settings, clinics, youth services, counseling centers, or schools. The combination of basic and applied knowledge makes this anthology an indispensable reference for any practitioner. With contributions by Andreas Opitz, Anke Mühle, Birgitt Ballhausen-Scharf, Dietrich Winzer, Hans Georg Lehle, Christoph Müller, Beate Schnabel, Anja Khalil, Carla Weber, Christoph Radaj, Dietlind, Köhncke, Franziska Schöpfer, Furi Kharbirpour, Gerhild Ohrnberger, Harald Weilnböck, Horst Wenzel, Kadir Kaynak, Matthias Wenck, Thomas Schneider, Tilman Sprondel, Ursula Pröbsting.
