Book Alice in Sussex

Download or read book Alice in Sussex written by Nicolas Mahler and published by . This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A twist on the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland told through Nicolas Mahler's distinctive graphic novel style. Alice is back in Wonderland. Here she meets the White Rabbit, who leads her down into his rabbit hole in search of an illustrated edition of H. C. Artmann's Frankenstein in Sussex. Over the course of the novel, Alice repeatedly runs into the Rabbit, who quotes freely from other literary works by the likes of Herman Melville and E. M. Cioran. Unlike in Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice is not traveling the Wonderland we know. Rather, in Nicolas Mahler's whimsical graphic novel retelling, she is in a house deep beneath the ground. On subsequent floors, she encounters the famous creations of Lewis Carroll: the Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, and many others. One after the other, these creatures address the terrors of childhood and youth. It is only when Alice reaches the ground floor of the house that we arrive at the inevitable climax: face to face with Frankenstein's Monster.

Book Drawing on the Victorians

Download or read book Drawing on the Victorians written by Anna Maria Jones and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late nineteenth-century Britain experienced an unprecedented explosion of visual print culture and a simultaneous rise in literacy across social classes. New printing technologies facilitated quick and cheap dissemination of images—illustrated books, periodicals, cartoons, comics, and ephemera—to a mass readership. This Victorian visual turn prefigured the present-day impact of the Internet on how images are produced and shared, both driving and reflecting the visual culture of its time. From this starting point, Drawing on the Victorians sets out to explore the relationship between Victorian graphic texts and today’s steampunk, manga, and other neo-Victorian genres that emulate and reinterpret their predecessors. Neo-Victorianism is a flourishing worldwide phenomenon, but one whose relationship with the texts from which it takes its inspiration remains underexplored. In this collection, scholars from literary studies, cultural studies, and art history consider contemporary works—Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Moto Naoko’s Lady Victorian, and Edward Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies, among others—alongside their antecedents, from Punch’s 1897 Jubilee issue to Alice in Wonderland and more. They build on previous work on neo-Victorianism to affirm that the past not only influences but converses with the present. Contributors: Christine Ferguson, Kate Flint, Anna Maria Jones, Linda K. Hughes, Heidi Kaufman, Brian Maidment, Rebecca N. Mitchell, Jennifer Phegley, Monika Pietrzak-Franger, Peter W. Sinnema, Jessica Straley

Book excerpt: A sober cop’s life is upended when his powerful ex-brother-in-law is murdered Quitting drinking may have saved Frank Devlin’s life, but it killed his career. When the NYPD detective got sober, he also stopped taking bribes, and his rise through the ranks slowed to a crawl. After thirteen years of working the drug-plagued Lower East Side, he has a new relationship and a modicum of inner peace—both of which are threatened when Devlin’s past comes back to destroy him. A crazed junkie guns down a Senate hopeful and his mistress, and the police suspect that Devlin may be involved for two reasons: the candidate was once his brother-in-law, and the junkie was his longtime snitch. To clear his name, Devlin must sort out a murderous conspiracy that will make him wish he had never climbed onto the wagon.

Book A Genealogy of the Wives of the American Presidents and Their First Two Generations of Descent

This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Martha Washington to Laura Bush, the wife of each U.S. president has found her place in history, often setting trends and doing important work for the nation. This reference work traces the lineage of all presidents' wives, arranged alphabetically from Abigail Adams to Jane Wyman. Genealogy reveals that some of the women are connected to one another through common ancestry, sometimes even through royal blood--for example, the bloodlines of Laura Bush and Abigail Adams join at King Henry II and can then be traced to King Pepin the Short, born in 714. Several others can be traced back to King John, William the Conqueror, Charlemagne, and Lady Godiva. Clearly organized and easy to use, the work includes not only ancestors but offspring, listing children and grandchildren for each woman. Dates of birth, death, and marriage of ancestors, children and grandchildren are included where known.
