Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life, Alice McKinley feels, is just one big embarrassment. Here she is, about to be a teenager and she doesn't know how. It's worse for her than for anyone else, she believes, because she has no role model. Her mother has been dead for years. Help and advice can only come from her father, manager of a music store, and her nineteen-year-old brother, who is a slob. What do they know about being a teen age girl? What she needs, Alice decides, is a gorgeous woman who does everything right, as a roadmap, so to speak. If only she finds herself, when school begins, in the classroom of the beautiful sixth-grade teacher, Miss Cole, her troubles will be over. Unfortunately, she draws the homely, pear-shaped Mrs. Plotkin. One of Mrs. Plotkin's first assignments is for each member of the class to keep a journal of their thoughts and feelings. Alice calls hers "The Agony of Alice," and in it she records all the embarrassing things that happen to her. Through the school year, Alice has lots to record. She also comes to know the lovely Miss Cole, as well as Mrs. Plotkin. And she meets an aunt and a female cousin whom she has not really known before. Out of all this, to her amazement, comes a role model -- one that she would never have accepted before she made a few very important discoveries on her own, things no roadmap could have shown her. Alice moves on, ready to be a wise teenager.

Book About Alice

Download or read book About Alice written by Calvin Trillin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2006-12-26 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Calvin Trillin’s antic tales of family life, she was portrayed as the wife who had “a weird predilection for limiting our family to three meals a day” and the mother who thought that if you didn’t go to every performance of your child’s school play, “the county would come and take the child.” Now, five years after her death, her husband offers this loving portrait of Alice Trillin off the page–his loving portrait of Alice Trillin off the page–an educator who was equally at home teaching at a university or a drug treatment center, a gifted writer, a stunningly beautiful and thoroughly engaged woman who, in the words of a friend, “managed to navigate the tricky waters between living a life you could be proud of and still delighting in the many things there are to take pleasure in.” Though it deals with devastating loss, About Alice is also a love story, chronicling a romance that began at a Manhattan party when Calvin Trillin desperately tried to impress a young woman who “seemed to glow.” “You have never again been as funny as you were that night,” Alice would say, twenty or thirty years later. “You mean I peaked in December of 1963?” “I’m afraid so.” But he never quit trying to impress her. In his writing, she was sometimes his subject and always his muse. The dedication of the first book he published after her death read, “I wrote this for Alice. Actually, I wrote everything for Alice.” In that spirit, Calvin Trillin has, with About Alice, created a gift to the wife he adored and to his readers.

Book Alice in Japanese Wonderlands

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amanda Kennell
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2023-07-31
  • ISBN : 0824896874
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Alice in Japanese Wonderlands written by Amanda Kennell and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first translations of Lewis Carroll's Alice books appeared in Japan in 1899, Alice has found her way into nearly every facet of Japanese life and popular culture. The books have been translated into Japanese more than 500 times, resulting in more editions of these works in Japanese than any other language except English. Generations of Japanese children learned English from textbooks containing Alice excerpts. Japan's internationally famous fashion vogue, Lolita, merges Alice with French Rococo style. In Japan Alice is everywhere--in manga, literature, fine art, live-action film and television shows, anime, video games, clothing, restaurants, and household goods consumed by people of all ages and genders. In Alice in Japanese Wonderlands, Amanda Kennell traverses the breadth of Alice's Japanese media environment, starting in 1899 and continuing through 60s psychedelia and 70s intellectual fads to the present, showing how a set of nineteenth-century British children's books became a vital element in Japanese popular culture. Using Japan's myriad adaptations to investigate how this modern media landscape developed, Kennell reveals how Alice connects different fields of cultural production and builds cohesion out of otherwise disparate media, artists, and consumers. The first sustained examination of Japanese Alice adaptations, her work probes the meaning of Alice in Wonderland as it was adapted by a cast of characters that includes the "father of the Japanese short story," Ryūnosuke Akutagawa; the renowned pop artist Yayoi Kusama; and the best-selling manga collective CLAMP. While some may deride adaptive activities as mere copying, the form Alice takes in Japan today clearly reflects domestic considerations and creativity, not the desire to imitate. By engaging with studies of adaptation, literature, film, media, and popular culture, Kennell uses Japan's proliferation of Alices to explore both Alice and the Japanese media environment.

Book Unmask Alice

  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Unmask Alice written by Rick Emerson and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unmask Alice by Rick Emerson goes a long way to showing what investigative journalism could be in the right hands . . . this book is undeniably buzzworthy." —Portland Book Review "An absorbing and unnerving read . . . this book demands to be finished in one sitting." —Booklist "One of the must-read books of this century." —Gillian Flynn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl Two teens. Two diaries. Two social panics. One incredible fraud. In 1971, Go Ask Alice reinvented the young adult genre with a blistering portrayal of sex, psychosis, and teenage self-destruction. The supposed diary of a middle-class addict, Go Ask Alice terrified adults and cemented LSD's fearsome reputation, fueling support for the War on Drugs. Five million copies later, Go Ask Alice remains a divisive bestseller, outraging censors and earning new fans, all of them drawn by the book's mythic premise: A Real Diary, by Anonymous. But Alice was only the beginning. In 1979, another diary rattled the culture, setting the stage for a national meltdown. The posthumous memoir of an alleged teenage Satanist, Jay's Journal merged with a frightening new crisis—adolescent suicide—to create a literal witch hunt, shattering countless lives and poisoning whole communities. In reality, Go Ask Alice and Jay's Journal came from the same dark place: Beatrice Sparks, a serial con artist who betrayed a grieving family, stole a dead boy's memory, and lied her way to the National Book Awards. Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World's Most Notorious Diaries is a true story of contagious deception. It stretches from Hollywood to Quantico, and passes through a tiny patch of Utah nicknamed "the fraud capital of America." It's the story of a doomed romance and a vengeful celebrity. Of a lazy press and a public mob. Of two suicidal teenagers, and their exploitation by a literary vampire. Unmask Alice . . . where truth is stranger than nonfiction.

Book Anderson s Alice

  • Author : Lewis Carroll
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2024-09-16
  • ISBN : 1496856465
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Anderson s Alice written by Lewis Carroll and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Walter Anderson's best-loved books, An Alphabet and Robinson: The Pleasant History of an Unusual Cat are much admired by children and parents, and have long been given as special gifts emblazoned with Anderson's unique art. In that vein and long in demand is this revived edition of Anderson’s Alice, which carries the renowned artist's visual translation of Lewis Carroll's classic story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Anderson's Alice, though, is no Victorian doll as she is in the famous illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, Arthur Rackham, and elsewhere. Instead, Anderson represents Alice as an adventurer, capturing her spirit and her energy in bold lines. In Anderson's Alice: Walter Anderson Illustrates “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” ninety-two pen-and-ink drawings accompany the complete text of Lewis Carroll's original narrative. Anderson (1903–1965) drew them alone late at night as he recovered from an illness, and he considered them to be translations of words into visual images rather than illustrations. The story of Alice brought him comfort and inspiration, and he placed her wonderland close to his own homeland by localizing Alice's environment with backgrounds featuring the kinds of wildflowers and crabs that are native to the Gulf Coast. Walter Anderson, often intensely private within his community of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, observed and wrote about nature and produced thousands of drawings and watercolors of the plant and animal life on the Mississippi Coast. These show his strangely beautiful style and a rich and unchecked imagination. With these artistic gifts, Anderson infuses new life into Lewis Carroll's well-loved characters, who have delighted generations of children and adults.
