Book excerpt: El cloud computing o computación en la nube es una nueva forma de prestación de servicios globales que, apoyándose sobre una infraestructura tecnológica bajo demanda, permite a usuarios y empresas optimizar costes y recursos en función de sus necesidades de tratamiento de información. Este paradigma, que se está generalizando rápidamente debido a sus ventajas, supone también un reto importante para la protección de datos que debe adaptar sus principios a un modelo que presenta peculiaridades específicas. El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo identificar las oportunidades que ofrece el cloud computing, sin obviar los aspectos más trascendentes al contratar este tipo de servicios. Para ello, el autor analiza tanto las ventajas económicas y técnicas de este modelo como sus principales riesgos, haciendo una especial referencia al marco jurídico del cloud computing desde la perspectiva de la protección de datos personales y destacando las notas propias que lo caracterizan y diferencian de los sistemas informáticos tradicionales. El trabajo desglosa y examina de forma pormenorizada tanto los tipos de nubes como el papel que cumplen los diferentes actores implicados en este servicio, así como las relaciones contractuales que deben establecerse como base. Además, dedica un espacio importante a las transferencias internacionales de datos y a las medidas de seguridad exigibles para garantizar la integridad de la información, un aspecto esencial y de obligada aplicación.
