Book Computer System Organization

Download or read book Computer System Organization written by Elliott I. Organick and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer System Organization: The B5700/B6700 Series focuses on the organization of the B5700/B6700 Series developed by Burroughs Corp. More specifically, it examines how computer systems can (or should) be organized to support, and hence make more efficient, the running of computer programs that evolve with characteristically similar information structures. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with a background on the development of the B5700/B6700 operating systems, paying particular attention to their hardware/software architecture. The discussion then turns to the block-structured processes involved in the B6700 job, which consists of a time-invariant algorithm and a time-varying data structure which is the record of execution of that algorithm. Subsequent chapters deal with the basic data structures for B6700 algorithms; task attributes and the creation and coordination of tasks; stack structure and stack ownership; and software interrupts. Storage control strategies as well as the pros and cons of B6700 are also considered, along with some hardware details of procedure entry and return and tasking. This monograph is intended for computer center directors, other computer professionals, and serious students in computer science who have an interest in the subject of computer organization.

Book The Burroughs Corporation and Its Innovative Architecture

Download or read book The Burroughs Corporation and Its Innovative Architecture written by Stephen H. Kaisler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the history of the Burroughs Corporation, from its earliest days as a computer system vendor up to the late 1990s after its merger with Univac Corporation to form Unisys. The Burroughs Corporation was one of the earliest manufacturers of large mainframe computers through its purchase of Datatron. Burroughs developed four more generations of mainframe computer systems, culminating in the B2x00/3x00/4x00 family of machines. It also developed one of the most innovative computer architectures in the B5x00/6x00/7x00 family. These systems featured direct execution of high-level language programs, stack-based and tagged architectures, multiprocessing, and early virtualization through descriptors. Burroughs’ early work on the ILLIAC IV led to the development of the D825 for SAGE and the B8500, the former a notable success and the latter less than successful. Burroughs’ foray into small computer systems was not financially viable, but its merger with Univac led to the formation of Unisys, where its advanced architectures survive today as counterpoints to IBM’s mainframe architectures—the two surviving manufacturers from the mainframe era.

Download or read book Reliable Computer Systems written by Santosh K. Shrivastava and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research project to investigate the design and construction of reliable computing systems was initiated by B. Randell at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1972. In over ten years of research on system reliability, a substantial number of papers have been produced by the members of this project. These papers have appeared in a variety of journals and conference proceedings and it is hoped that this book will prove to be a convenient reference volume for research workers active in this important area. In selecting papers published by past and present members of this project, I have used the following criteria: a paper is selected if it is concerned with fault tolerance and is not a review paper and was published before 1983. I have used these criteria (with only one or two exceptions!) in order to present a collection of papers with a common theme and, at the same time, to limit the size of the book to a reasonable length. The papers have been grouped into seven chapters. The first chapter introduces fundamental concepts of fault tolerance and ends with the earliest Newcastle paper on reliability. The project perhaps became well known after the invention of recovery blocks - a simple yet effective means of incorporating fault tolerance in software. The second chapter contains papers on recovery blocks, starting with the paper which first introduced the concept.
