Book Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces

Download or read book Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces written by Rick Miranda and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Miranda takes the approach that algebraic curves are best encountered for the first time over the complex numbers, where the reader's classical intuition about surfaces, integration, and other concepts can be brought into play. Therefore, many examples of algebraic curves are presented in the first chapters. In this way, the book begins as a primer on Riemann surfaces, with complex charts and meromorphic functions taking centre stage. But the main examples come fromprojective curves, and slowly but surely the text moves toward the algebraic category. Proofs of the Riemann-Roch and Serre Dualtiy Theorems are presented in an algebraic manner, via an adaptation of the adelic proof, expressed completely in terms of solving a Mittag-Leffler problem. Sheaves andcohomology are introduced as a unifying device in the later chapters, so that their utility and naturalness are immediately obvious. Requiring a background of one term of complex variable theory and a year of abstract algebra, this is an excellent graduate textbook for a second-term course in complex variables or a year-long course in algebraic geometry.

Download or read book Ruled Varieties written by Gerd Fischer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruled varieties are unions of a family of linear spaces. They are objects of algebraic geometry as well as differential geometry, especially if the ruling is developable. This book is an introduction to both aspects, the algebraic and differential one. Starting from very elementary facts, the necessary techniques are developed, especially concerning Grassmannians and fundamental forms in a version suitable for complex projective algebraic geometry. Finally, this leads to recent results on the classification of developable ruled varieties and facts about tangent and secant varieties. Compared to many other topics of algebraic geometry, this is an area easily accessible to a graduate course.

Book Regular Functions of a Quaternionic Variable

Download or read book Regular Functions of a Quaternionic Variable written by Graziano Gentili and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the foundations of the theory of slice regular functions over the quaternions, introduced in 2006, and gives an overview of its generalizations and applications. As in the case of other interesting quaternionic function theories, the original motivations were the richness of the theory of holomorphic functions of one complex variable and the fact that quaternions form the only associative real division algebra with a finite dimension n>2. (Slice) regular functions quickly showed particularly appealing features and developed into a full-fledged theory, while finding applications to outstanding problems from other areas of mathematics. For instance, this class of functions includes polynomials and power series. The nature of the zero sets of regular functions is particularly interesting and strictly linked to an articulate algebraic structure, which allows several types of series expansion and the study of singularities. Integral representation formulas enrich the theory and are fundamental to the construction of a noncommutative functional calculus. Regular functions have a particularly nice differential topology and are useful tools for the construction and classification of quaternionic orthogonal complex structures, where they compensate for the scarcity of conformal maps in dimension four. This second, expanded edition additionally covers a new branch of the theory: the study of regular functions whose domains are not axially symmetric. The volume is intended for graduate students and researchers in complex or hypercomplex analysis and geometry, function theory, and functional analysis in general.

Download or read book Basic Algebraic Geometry written by I.R. Shafarevich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic geometry occupied a central place in the mathematics of the last century. The deepest results of Abel, Riemann, Weierstrass, many of the most important papers of Klein and Poincare belong to this do mam. At the end of the last and the beginning of the present century the attitude towards algebraic geometry changed abruptly. Around 1910 Klein wrote: "When I was a student, Abelian functions*-as an after-effect of Jacobi's tradition-were regarded as the undIsputed summit of mathe matics, and each of us, as a matter of course, had the ambition to forge ahead in this field. And now? The young generation hardly know what Abelian functions are." (Vorlesungen tiber die Entwicklung der Mathe matik im XIX. Jahrhundert, Springer-Verlag, Berlin 1926, Seite 312). The style of thinking that was fully developed in algebraic geometry at that time was too far removed from the set-theoretical and axio matic spirit, which then determined the development of mathematics. Several decades had to lapse before the rise of the theory of topolo gical, differentiable and complex manifolds, the general theory of fields, the theory of ideals in sufficiently general rings, and only then it became possible to construct algebraic geometry on the basis of the principles of set-theoretical mathematics. Around the middle of the present century algebraic geometry had undergone to a large extent such a reshaping process. As a result, it can again lay claim to the position it once occupied in mathematics

Book excerpt: The second volume of Shafarevich's introductory book on algebraic geometry focuses on schemes, complex algebraic varieties and complex manifolds. As with Volume 1 the author has revised the text and added new material, e.g. a section on real algebraic curves. Although the material is more advanced than in Volume 1 the algebraic apparatus is kept to a minimum making the book accessible to non-specialists. It can be read independently of Volume 1 and is suitable for beginning graduate students in mathematics as well as in theoretical physics.

Book Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces

Download or read book Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces written by John P. D'Angelo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces covers a wide range of information from basic facts about holomorphic functions of several complex variables through deep results such as subelliptic estimates for the ?-Neumann problem on pseudoconvex domains with a real analytic boundary. The book focuses on describing the geometry of a real hypersurface in a complex vector space by understanding its relationship with ambient complex analytic varieties. You will learn how to decide whether a real hypersurface contains complex varieties, how closely such varieties can contact the hypersurface, and why it's important. The book concludes with two sets of problems: routine problems and difficult problems (many of which are unsolved). Principal prerequisites for using this book include a thorough understanding of advanced calculus and standard knowledge of complex analysis in one variable. Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces will be a useful text for advanced graduate students and professionals working in complex analysis.

Book Real Algebraic Varieties

Download or read book Real Algebraic Varieties written by Frédéric Mangolte and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a systematic presentation of real algebraic varieties. Real algebraic varieties are ubiquitous. They are the first objects encountered when learning of coordinates, then equations, but the systematic study of these objects, however elementary they may be, is formidable. This book is intended for two kinds of audiences: it accompanies the reader, familiar with algebra and geometry at the masters level, in learning the basics of this rich theory, as much as it brings to the most advanced reader many fundamental results often missing from the available literature, the “folklore”. In particular, the introduction of topological methods of the theory to non-specialists is one of the original features of the book. The first three chapters introduce the basis and classical methods of real and complex algebraic geometry. The last three chapters each focus on one more specific aspect of real algebraic varieties. A panorama of classical knowledge is presented, as well as major developments of the last twenty years in the topology and geometry of varieties of dimension two and three, without forgetting curves, the central subject of Hilbert's famous sixteenth problem. Various levels of exercises are given, and the solutions of many of them are provided at the end of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: book and to the publisher NOORDHOFF who made possible the appearance of the second edition and enabled the author to introduce the above-mentioned modifi cations and additions. Moscow M. A. NAIMARK August 1963 FOREWORD TO THE SECOND SOVIET EDITION In this second edition the initial text has been worked over again and improved, certain portions have been completely rewritten; in particular, Chapter VIII has been rewritten in a more accessible form. The changes and extensions made by the author in the Japanese, German, first and second (= first revised) American, and also in the Romanian (lithographed) editions, were hereby taken into account. Appendices II and III, which are necessary for understanding Chapter VIII, have been included for the convenience of the reader. The book discusses many new theoretical results which have been developing in tensively during the decade after the publication of the first edition. Of course, lim itations on the volume of the book obliged the author to make a tough selection and in many cases to limit himself to simply a formulation of the new results or to pointing out the literature. The author was also compelled to make a choice of the exceptionally extensive collection of new works in extending the literature list. Monographs and survey articles on special topics of the theory which have been published during the past decade have been included in this list and in the litera ture pointed out in the individual chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: ``The functional-analytic approach to uniform algebras is inextricably interwoven with the theory of analytic functions ... [T]he concepts and techniques introduced to deal with these problems [of uniform algebras], such as ``peak points'' and ``parts,'' provide new insights into the classical theory of approximation by analytic functions. In some cases, elegant proofs of old results are obtained by abstract methods. The new concepts also lead to new problems in classical function theory, which serve to enliven and refresh that subject. In short, the relation between functional analysis and the analytic theory is both fascinating and complex, and it serves to enrich and deepen each of the respective disciplines.'' This volume includes a Bibliography, List of Special Symbols, and an Index. Each of the chapters is followed by notes and numerous exercises.
