Book Foundations of Algebraic Topology

Download or read book Foundations of Algebraic Topology written by Samuel Eilenberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for an axiomatic treatment of homology and cohomology theory has long been felt by topologists. Professors Eilenberg and Steenrod present here for the first time an axiomatization of the complete transition from topology to algebra. Originally published in 1952. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Algebraical and Topological Foundations of Geometry

Download or read book Algebraical and Topological Foundations of Geometry written by Hans Freudenthal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraical and Topological Foundations of Geometry contains the proceedings of the Colloquium on Algebraic and Topological Foundations of Geometry, held in Utrecht, the Netherlands in August 1959. The papers review the algebraical and topological foundations of geometry and cover topics ranging from the geometric algebra of the Möbius plane to the theory of parallels with applications to closed geodesies. Groups of homeomorphisms and topological descriptive planes are also discussed. Comprised of 26 chapters, this book introduces the reader to the theory of parallels with applications to closed geodesies; groups of homeomorphisms; complemented modular lattices; and topological descriptive planes. Subsequent chapters focus on collineation groups; exceptional algebras and exceptional groups; the connection between algebra and constructions with ruler and compasses; and the use of differential geometry and analytic group theory methods in foundations of geometry. Von Staudt projectivities of Moufang planes are also considered, and an axiomatic treatment of polar geometry is presented. This monograph will be of interest to students of mathematics.

Book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds Surfaces and Beyond

Download or read book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds Surfaces and Beyond written by Vicente Muñoz and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a novel approach to differential topology. Its main focus is to give a comprehensive introduction to the classification of manifolds, with special attention paid to the case of surfaces, for which the book provides a complete classification from many points of view: topological, smooth, constant curvature, complex, and conformal. Each chapter briefly revisits basic results usually known to graduate students from an alternative perspective, focusing on surfaces. We provide full proofs of some remarkable results that sometimes are missed in basic courses (e.g., the construction of triangulations on surfaces, the classification of surfaces, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, the degree-genus formula for complex plane curves, the existence of constant curvature metrics on conformal surfaces), and we give hints to questions about higher dimensional manifolds. Many examples and remarks are scattered through the book. Each chapter ends with an exhaustive collection of problems and a list of topics for further study. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students who did take standard introductory courses on algebraic topology, differential and Riemannian geometry, or algebraic geometry, but have not seen their deep interconnections, which permeate a modern approach to geometry and topology of manifolds.

Download or read book Foundations of Topology written by C. Wayne Patty and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 2009 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology is a branch of pure mathematics that deals with the abstract relationships found in geometry and analysis. Written with the mature student in mind, Foundations of Topology, Second Edition, provides a user-friendly, clear, and concise introduction to this fascinating area of mathematics. The author introduces topics that are well motivated with thorough proofs that make them easy to follow. Historical comments are dispersed throughout the text, and exercises, varying in degree of difficulty, are found at the end of each chapter. Foundations of Topology is an excellent text for teaching students how to develop the skill to write clear and precise proofs.

Download or read book Algebraic Geometry written by Robin Hartshorne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to abstract algebraic geometry, with the only prerequisites being results from commutative algebra, which are stated as needed, and some elementary topology. More than 400 exercises distributed throughout the book offer specific examples as well as more specialised topics not treated in the main text, while three appendices present brief accounts of some areas of current research. This book can thus be used as textbook for an introductory course in algebraic geometry following a basic graduate course in algebra. Robin Hartshorne studied algebraic geometry with Oscar Zariski and David Mumford at Harvard, and with J.-P. Serre and A. Grothendieck in Paris. He is the author of "Residues and Duality", "Foundations of Projective Geometry", "Ample Subvarieties of Algebraic Varieties", and numerous research titles.

Book Fundamentals of Algebraic Topology

Download or read book Fundamentals of Algebraic Topology written by Steven H. Weintraub and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rapid and concise presentation of the essential ideas and results of algebraic topology follows the axiomatic foundations pioneered by Eilenberg and Steenrod. The approach of the book is pragmatic: while most proofs are given, those that are particularly long or technical are omitted, and results are stated in a form that emphasizes practical use over maximal generality. Moreover, to better reveal the logical structure of the subject, the separate roles of algebra and topology are illuminated. Assuming a background in point-set topology, Fundamentals of Algebraic Topology covers the canon of a first-year graduate course in algebraic topology: the fundamental group and covering spaces, homology and cohomology, CW complexes and manifolds, and a short introduction to homotopy theory. Readers wishing to deepen their knowledge of algebraic topology beyond the fundamentals are guided by a short but carefully annotated bibliography.

Book Topology Geometry and Gauge Fields

Download or read book Topology Geometry and Gauge Fields written by Gregory L. Naber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like any books on a subject as vast as this, this book has to have a point-of-view to guide the selection of topics. Naber takes the view that the rekindled interest that mathematics and physics have shown in each other of late should be fostered, and that this is best accomplished by allowing them to cohabit. The book weaves together rudimentary notions from the classical gauge theory of physics with the topological and geometrical concepts that became the mathematical models of these notions. The reader is asked to join the author on some vague notion of what an electromagnetic field might be, to be willing to accept a few of the more elementary pronouncements of quantum mechanics, and to have a solid background in real analysis and linear algebra and some of the vocabulary of modern algebra. In return, the book offers an excursion that begins with the definition of a topological space and finds its way eventually to the moduli space of anti-self-dual SU(2) connections on S4 with instanton number -1.
