Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In algebra there are four basic structures: groups, rings, fields and modules. In this book the theory of these basic structures is presented and the laws of composition - the basic operations of algebra - are studied. Essentially, no previous knowledge is required, it is only assumed as background that the reader has learned some linear algebra over the real numbers.

Book A Course on Abstract Algebra

Download or read book A Course on Abstract Algebra written by Minking Eie and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to abstract algebra for advanced undergraduate students. Based on the author's lecture notes at the Department of Mathematics, National Chung Cheng University of Taiwan, it begins with a description of the algebraic structures of the ring and field of rational numbers. Abstract groups are then introduced. Technical results such as Lagrange's Theorem and Sylow's Theorems follow as applications of group theory. Ring theory forms the second part of abstract algebra, with the ring of polynomials and the matrix ring as basic examples. The general theory of ideals as well as maximal ideals in the rings of polynomials over the rational numbers are also discussed. The final part of the book focuses on field theory, field extensions and then Galois theory to illustrate the correspondence between the Galois groups and field extensions. This textbook is more accessible and less ambitious than most existing books covering the same subject. Readers will also find the pedagogical material very useful in enhancing the teaching and learning of abstract algebra.

Book The Algebraic Structure of Crossed Products

Download or read book The Algebraic Structure of Crossed Products written by G. Karpilovsky and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-05-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 15 years, the theory of crossed products has enjoyed a period of vigorous development. The foundations have been strengthened and reorganized from new points of view, especially from the viewpoint of graded rings. The purpose of this monograph is to give, in a self-contained manner, an up-to-date account of various aspects of this development, in an effort to convey a comprehensive picture of the current state of the subject. It is assumed that the reader has had the equivalent of a standard first-year graduate course, thus familiarity with basic ring-theoretic and group-theoretic concepts and an understanding of elementary properties of modules, tensor products and fields. A chapter on algebraic preliminaries is included, which briefly surveys topics required later in the book.

Book Ordered Algebraic Structures

Download or read book Ordered Algebraic Structures written by Jorge Martínez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 28th of February through the 3rd of March, 2001, the Department of Math ematics of the University of Florida hosted a conference on the many aspects of the field of Ordered Algebraic Structures. Officially, the title was "Conference on Lattice Ordered Groups and I-Rings", but its subject matter evolved beyond the limitations one might associate with such a label. This volume is officially the proceedings of that conference, although, likewise, it is more accurate to view it as a complement to that event. The conference was the fourth in wh at has turned into aseries of similar conferences, on Ordered Algebraic Structures, held in consecutive years. The first, held at the University of Florida in Spring, 1998, was a modest and informal affair. The fifth is in the final planning stages at this writing, for March 7-9, 2002, at Vanderbilt University. And although these events remain modest and reasonably informal, their scope has broadened, as they have succeeded in attracting mathematicians from other, related fields, as weIl as from more distant lands.

Book Extending Structures

Download or read book Extending Structures written by Ana Agore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending Structures: Fundamentals and Applications treats the extending structures (ES) problem in the context of groups, Lie/Leibniz algebras, associative algebras and Poisson/Jacobi algebras. This concisely written monograph offers the reader an incursion into the extending structures problem which provides a common ground for studying both the extension problem and the factorization problem. Features Provides a unified approach to the extension problem and the factorization problem Introduces the classifying complements problem as a sort of converse of the factorization problem; and in the case of groups it leads to a theoretical formula for computing the number of types of isomorphisms of all groups of finite order that arise from a minimal set of data Describes a way of classifying a certain class of finite Lie/Leibniz/Poisson/Jacobi/associative algebras etc. using flag structures Introduces new (non)abelian cohomological objects for all of the aforementioned categories As an application to the approach used for dealing with the classification part of the ES problem, the Galois groups associated with extensions of Lie algebras and associative algebras are described

Book C Algebra Extensions and K Homology AM 95 Volume 95

Download or read book C Algebra Extensions and K Homology AM 95 Volume 95 written by Ronald G. Douglas and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in diverse areas of mathematics suggest the study of a certain class of extensions of C*-algebras. Here, Ronald Douglas uses methods from homological algebra to study this collection of extensions. He first shows that equivalence classes of the extensions of the compact metrizable space X form an abelian group Ext (X). Second, he shows that the correspondence X ⃗ Ext (X) defines a homotopy invariant covariant functor which can then be used to define a generalized homology theory. Establishing the periodicity of order two, the author shows, following Atiyah, that a concrete realization of K-homology is obtained.

Book Ordered Algebraic Structures

Download or read book Ordered Algebraic Structures written by W.C. Holland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference on Ordered Algebraic Structures held in Curat;ao, from the 26th of June through the 30th of June, 1995, at the Avila Beach Hotel, marked the eighth year of ac tivities by the Caribbean Mathematics Foundation (abbr. CMF), which was the principal sponsor of this conference. CMF was inaugurated in 1988 with a conference on Ordered Algebraic Structures. During the years between these two conferences the field has changed sufficiently, both from my point of view and, I believe, that of my co-organizer, W. Charles Holland, to make one wonder about the label "Ordered Algebraic Structures" itself. We recognized this from the start, and right away this conference carried a subtitle, or, if one prefers, an agenda: we concentrated on the one hand, on traditional themes in the theory of ordered groups, including model-theoretic aspects, and, on the other hand, on matters in which topology (more precisely C(X)-style topology) and category theory would play a prominent role. Plainly, ordered algebra has many faces, and it is becoming increas ingly difficult to organize an intimate conference, such as the ones encouraged in the series sponsored by CMF, in this area on a broad set of themes. These proceedings reflect, accurately we think, the spirit of the conferees, but it is not a faithful record of the papers presented at the conference.

Book Taming Wild Extensions Hopf Algebras and Local Galois Module Theory

Download or read book Taming Wild Extensions Hopf Algebras and Local Galois Module Theory written by Lindsay Childs and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies Hopf algebras over valuation rings of local fields and their application to the theory of wildly ramified extensions of local fields. The results, not previously published in book form, show that Hopf algebras play a natural role in local Galois module theory. Included in this work are expositions of short exact sequences of Hopf algebras; Hopf Galois structures on separable field extensions; a generalization of Noether's theorem on the Galois module structure of tamely ramified extensions of local fields to wild extensions acted on by Hopf algebras; connections between tameness and being Galois for algebras acted on by a Hopf algebra; constructions by Larson and Greither of Hopf orders over valuation rings; ramification criteria of Byott and Greither for the associated order of the valuation ring of an extension of local fields to be Hopf order; the Galois module structure of wildly ramified cyclic extensions of local fields of degree p and p2; and Kummer theory of formal groups. Beyond a general background in graduate-level algebra, some chapters assume an acquaintance with some algebraic number theory. From there, this exposition serves as an excellent resource and motivation for further work in the field.

Book Connecting Abstract Algebra to Secondary Mathematics for Secondary Mathematics Teachers

Download or read book Connecting Abstract Algebra to Secondary Mathematics for Secondary Mathematics Teachers written by Nicholas H. Wasserman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary mathematics teachers are frequently required to take a large number of mathematics courses – including advanced mathematics courses such as abstract algebra – as part of their initial teacher preparation program and/or their continuing professional development. The content areas of advanced and secondary mathematics are closely connected. Yet, despite this connection many secondary teachers insist that such advanced mathematics is unrelated to their future professional work in the classroom. This edited volume elaborates on some of the connections between abstract algebra and secondary mathematics, including why and in what ways they may be important for secondary teachers. Notably, the volume disseminates research findings about how secondary teachers engage with, and make sense of, abstract algebra ideas, both in general and in relation to their own teaching, as well as offers itself as a place to share practical ideas and resources for secondary mathematics teacher preparation and professional development. Contributors to the book are scholars who have both experience in the mathematical preparation of secondary teachers, especially in relation to abstract algebra, as well as those who have engaged in related educational research. The volume addresses some of the persistent issues in secondary mathematics teacher education in connection to advanced mathematics courses, as well as situates and conceptualizes different ways in which abstract algebra might be influential for teachers of algebra. Connecting Abstract Algebra to Secondary Mathematics, for Secondary Mathematics Teachers is a productive resource for mathematics teacher educators who teach capstone courses or content-focused methods courses, as well as for abstract algebra instructors interested in making connections to secondary mathematics.

Download or read book Abstract Algebra written by Joseph H. Silverman and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This abstract algebra textbook takes an integrated approach that highlights the similarities of fundamental algebraic structures among a number of topics. The book begins by introducing groups, rings, vector spaces, and fields, emphasizing examples, definitions, homomorphisms, and proofs. The goal is to explain how all of the constructions fit into an axiomatic framework and to emphasize the importance of studying those maps that preserve the underlying algebraic structure. This fast-paced introduction is followed by chapters in which each of the four main topics is revisited and deeper results are proven. The second half of the book contains material of a more advanced nature. It includes a thorough development of Galois theory, a chapter on modules, and short surveys of additional algebraic topics designed to whet the reader's appetite for further study. This book is intended for a first introduction to abstract algebra and requires only a course in linear algebra as a prerequisite. The more advanced material could be used in an introductory graduate-level course.
