Book Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups with Few Factors

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups with Few Factors written by Alfonso Di Bartolo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-04-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic groups are treated in this volume from a group theoretical point of view and the obtained results are compared with the analogous issues in the theory of Lie groups. The main body of the text is devoted to a classification of algebraic groups and Lie groups having only few subgroups or few factor groups of different type. In particular, the diversity of the nature of algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic and over fields of characteristic zero is emphasized. This is revealed by the plethora of three-dimensional unipotent algebraic groups over a perfect field of positive characteristic, as well as, by many concrete examples which cover an area systematically. In the final section, algebraic groups and Lie groups having many closed normal subgroups are determined.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal developments in the arithmetic aspects of algebraic groups are included in the following five major topics: Algebraic linear groups and arithmetic groups, including a survey of the structure and classification theory over arbitrary fields, groups over Z, the maximal compact subgroups of p-adic groups, and reduction theory for arithmetic groups. Adelization, Tamagawa numbers, the Siegel-Weil formula, Galois cohomology, and approximation theorems. Automorphic forms, the spectral decomposition of L-squared (G/gamma), Eisenstein series, interpretation of a Ramanujan conjecture. The compactification and projective imbedding of arithmetically defined quotients of bounded symmetric domains, partial desingularization of the compactification, fiber systems of polarized abelian varieties, fields of moduli, zeta-functions, theta-functions, L-functions, Fourier-Jacobi series, symplectic representations. Vector-valued cohomology and rigidity theorems. (Author).

Book Algebraic Groups and their Representations

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and their Representations written by R.W. Carter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 19 articles written by speakers at the Advanced Study Institute on 'Modular representations and subgroup structure of al gebraic groups and related finite groups' held at the Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge from 23rd June to 4th July 1997. We acknowledge with gratitude the financial support given by the NATO Science Committee to enable this ASI to take place. Generous financial support was also provided by the European Union. We are also pleased to acknowledge funds given by EPSRC to the Newton Institute which were used to support the meeting. It is a pleasure to thank the Director of the Isaac Newton Institute, Professor Keith Moffatt, and the staff of the Institute for their dedicated work which did so much to further the success of the meeting. The editors wish to thank Dr. Ross Lawther and Dr. Nick Inglis most warmly for their help in the production of this volume. Dr. Lawther in particular made an invaluable contribution in preparing the volume for submission to the publishers. Finally we wish to thank the distinguished speakers at the ASI who agreed to write articles for this volume based on their lectures at the meet ing. We hope that the volume will stimulate further significant advances in the theory of algebraic groups.

Book The Maximal Subgroups of Classical Algebraic Groups

Download or read book The Maximal Subgroups of Classical Algebraic Groups written by Gary M. Seitz and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let [italic]V be a finite dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p [greater than] 0 and let G = SL([italic]V), Sp([italic]V), or SO([italic]V). The main result describes all closed, connected, overgroups of [italic]X in SL([italic]V), assuming [italic]X is a closed, connected, irreducible subgroup of G.

Book Discrete Subgroups of Semisimple Lie Groups

Download or read book Discrete Subgroups of Semisimple Lie Groups written by Gregori A. Margulis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-02-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete subgroups have played a central role throughout the development of numerous mathematical disciplines. Discontinuous group actions and the study of fundamental regions are of utmost importance to modern geometry. Flows and dynamical systems on homogeneous spaces have found a wide range of applications, and of course number theory without discrete groups is unthinkable. This book, written by a master of the subject, is primarily devoted to discrete subgroups of finite covolume in semi-simple Lie groups. Since the notion of "Lie group" is sufficiently general, the author not only proves results in the classical geometry setting, but also obtains theorems of an algebraic nature, e.g. classification results on abstract homomorphisms of semi-simple algebraic groups over global fields. The treatise of course contains a presentation of the author's fundamental rigidity and arithmeticity theorems. The work in this monograph requires the language and basic results from fields such as algebraic groups, ergodic theory, the theory of unitary representatons, and the theory of amenable groups. The author develops the necessary material from these subjects; so that, while the book is of obvious importance for researchers working in related areas, it is essentially self-contained and therefore is also of great interest for advanced students.

Book Reductive Subgroups of Exceptional Algebraic Groups

Download or read book Reductive Subgroups of Exceptional Algebraic Groups written by Martin W. Liebeck and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of simple algebraic groups is important in many areas of mathematics. The authors of this book investigate the subgroups of certain types of simple algebraic groups and obtain a complete description of all those subgroups which are themselves simple. This description is particularly useful in understanding centralizers of subgroups and restrictions of representations.
